So beautiful. Jackie Oates has just taught us this song at an EDFSS folk singing class and played us this version - just fabulous. i will be returning here often!
Tidal Waves The tide has turned And gone to sea, It had brought back To the foreshore And left for me A memory Of better times And love to share. So painful now Of a sudden, I turn to stone As not to show The hurt I feel. I am alone. Tide will again To land return And by mercy Cover with its Endless waters And take away The hurt and pain To leave sadness In autumn rain. EMP Jan, 2022 Thank you for your music @ Eliza Carthy
I just found one of your old singles you handed out in New York City years ago. Glad you’re still making music. I’m so happy about it and I don’t even know why. I like to see people living their dream I guess. I no longer have a CD player but there’s always RU-vid! 🩷🙌🦋
Wow! One of the reasons I love these ballads is that their themes are universal across human culture and time. Love, betrayal, death, money, power...the more things change, the more they stay the same! I found this via a BBC article on the most disturbing folk songs. It's hard to mess up the song - to me the Steeleye Span version is definitive - but this band with Eliza Carthy is awesome!
I found it via that article too and Eliza Carthy really is quite something... but as folk songs go it's not really that disturbing. Widow's Curse sung by Bellowhead is FAR worse and somehow the BBC omitted it!
I love the way you do this one, Eliza. It can be gruff, but singing it prettily makes it even spookier. Love the way Norma's warm alto comes in. It's a long ballad, but you make it so dramatic.
Have I seen something similar every year at the Revels? Not quite so slapstick, but hey Eliza you come from the land of Monty Python and also the Goon show and The Running Jumping standing Still film. Refreshing if not as funny as I had hoped.
Thank you, Eliza for posting this beautiful song. I assume it is traditional. There is no one who can sing better than your mom. You are a chip off the old block, yourself. Not to mention your wonderful Dad, Martin. From Oakland CA 2023
This is beautiful. Eliza's rich voice lends credence to this poem. I hear Norma in there somewhere. Congratulations Eliza on 30 years of creating beauty.
