The potato fruit will grow to resemble a cherry tomato. This can take up to about 6 weeks. You can harvest and dry these seeds the same way you would tomato seeds for replanting. Make sure Noone mistakes the two. The potato fruit has the highest concentration of solanine on the plant. These seeds may not grow true to the type of potato you planted. They can also take several years to produce potatoes. It is a fun growing experiment though.

Thank you for watching. I don't think I would survive with the amount of cold days y'all have up north. Do y'all have basements or root cellars in your area. I have been getting into long term food storage more here. Our warmer winters and high water table make it more difficult to find great areas for things like hanging braided garlic and onions. They tend to want to sprout before it is time to plant again.

Great video! I never considered using boards this way. We just do the spacing by rough estimate. Boards are definitely worth considering though. We use shredded leaves for covering the garlic over winter as well. Good over winter insulation is much needed up here in Chicagoland. Cheers!

@brettsbackyard8222
@brettsbackyard8222 10 месяцев назад
It is a great time to plant. Garlic likes to have around 40 days of cold weather early in it's grow time. This helps it to split into the cloves later on. You can plant even into January, but the later it goes in the ground, the less time it will have to produce good roots, and you could end up with smaller bulbs.
@debbiepochmann2156
@debbiepochmann2156 10 месяцев назад
I see the exposed cloves. Do you cover those with soil now? To clarify, you leave the boards in until when? Then you add soil to the empty spots where the boards were? As for mulch, when does that go on, relative to removing the boards, etc.?
@brettsbackyard8222
@brettsbackyard8222 10 месяцев назад
Good morning. Yes, I covered the remaining cloves as soon as I was finished making this video. I had left a couple of rows exposed to show what they looked like before adding the soil. The othere rows in the video are already covered. I will leave the boards in place for a month or two. They could be removed after you are finished spacing the cloves, but I want to let the roots begin to grow before removing them. This will help keep the critters from digging them up also. When I remove the boards, I will add some soil where the boards were and begin putting in the mulch at that time also. Garlic and onions can stand fairly low temperatures, but the mulch helps for a few reasons. Here we have had an unusually cold period the last few winters. The mulch will help keep the soil from completely drying out. It will also break down, adding nutrients to the soil.

Looking good. I am a bit jealous. I am mainly growing potatoes in clay, woodchips, and some 2 dollar discount soil that gets pretty hard. Using grass clippings has helped me soften it up a bit, but I only have so many grass clippings. Hope my neighbor mows soon so I can rake clippings from them too.
@brettsbackyard8222
@brettsbackyard8222 Год назад
Those woodchips and clippings should break down and help supply nutrients to the soil as well as beginning to break up that clay. You are going about it the right way with the resources you have. The good thing about potatoes, is they like yo be mounded up, so you can keep adding material as you get it, and they will help to break the clay up with their roots to some degree. When you do your crop rotation for next year, try using some root vegetable and peas to help break up that clay and put nutrients back in the soil. Prepping our garden soil is a lifelong process and a bunch of trial and error as we compete with the elements. For quicker results, you can always grow vegetables in containers. These can be as simple as a 5 gallon bucket. At the end of the season, add this soil to your garden area. Keep growing! Whatever the results, they are satisfying.

I did a video yesterday about potato flowers and seeds that I guess I accidentally deleted. A lot of the potato breeders use them to develop new kinds. You may come up with something completely new.

@@brettsbackyard8222 I am making a hybrid between S. ajanhuiri and a cultivar with better disease resistance and yield. So this would be an interspecific hybrid. S. ajanhuiri has remarkable frost hardiness, down to the low 20s. It is a cultivated variety and as such is perfectly edible with appropriate levels of glycoalkaloids. I also have two other varieties I am hybridizing and one of those is one that gives great flower and seed production. The ultimate goal is to then hybridize the hybrids and select for offspring that display the best traits of all 4 parents. Will probably be a years long endeavor, but I think it is worth it to have a super frost resistant, high yielding, disease resistant new cultivar.

Boxes are put together with chemicals that will leach off into the soil and into your harvest. I recommend non-treated wood brother.
@brettsbackyard8222
@brettsbackyard8222 Год назад
The research I have been reading suggest staying away from glossy covered or paper with lots of ink. I usually avoid these because they take longer to break down. Dioxin is one thing people worry about. These same levels have been found in our coffee filters. The glue in most boxes is made of a starch. The main reason I started using boxes on occasion was a study I read about the trace heavy metals found in the paper. It was showing rollie pollies and other bugs ingest these heavy metals and form them into larger particles that the plants do not take up through the roots. These are some of the reasons I am more concerned with the actual soil we use.

Hi Brett. Growing in Longview here--raised beds and containers. My tomatoes and peppers produced nothing until our temps finally cooled down. We still haven't had nearly enough water. One thing I learned from A&M's Ag program this year is that pollen actually dies in heat. The flowers still appear but the pollen in them is sterile with temps are consecutively as high as our were this summer. Now that it's cooled down, we've got tons of peppers and tomatoes and enjoying the harvest we should've had a few months ago. Looking forward to seeing an update from you soon.
