Welcome to Joyfully Thriving, where I share budget grocery hauls and show you how to save money on groceries! If you want to learn how to build a stockpile on a budget, I'm your girl! I look forward to sharing more with you, as we talk budgets and all things groceries.
Shop the sales and build a stockpile of meat and "healthy" foods. I have a full pantry of flour and baking goods and a freezer full of meats so I am supplementing with fresh foods. Feel free to do the same for your family buying the foods you deem healthy.
For the last 20yrs I have dedicated the bottom drawer of my kitchen cupboards for storing potatoes with a breathable layer underneath. Dark, cool, easy access and the perfect solution for me. 🤗 Ohh and also never store spuds with onions because they will go off even quicker 😉
I am a sale shopper through and through. Anything under $0.50 a pound on potatoes is a good deal in my area and experience. I just paid $1.88 for 5lbs and around Thanksgiving, I can sometimes pay $1 for 5lbs. Then I definitely stock up and store them in all the boxes! 😂
Perhaps but storing potatoes in the fridge is not recommended because it changes the starches and sugars inside the potatoes and causes them to also cook differently.
My Grandma stored Potatoes and Onions in Bushel Baskets in her Root Cellar - a small unfinished Storeroom in the Cellar with Shelves which Grandpa built, where she stored homemade Jellies etc. and canned goods. It was dark and cool. Cold in Winter!
@@joyfullythriving yes. When potatoes or rice are stored in the refrigerator it changes the starch to a resistant starch which digest slower and does not spike glucose. I just wondered if the box just makes them last longer. 😊
You are welcome to do so! I have found that just criss crossing the top like I showed in the video is enough venilitation. I have also used a bushel basket that had more venilitation if that is your preference.
Weird thing about potatoes. If they are stored in the light, they start to turn green. In the dark, they start to grow eyes. I know why this is, but do you? My problem with potatoes and onions is that they are drawing bugs. Tried storing them in airtight containers, but that didn't work either.
Hmmm. I am so sorry you have so many problems storing potatoes! I have never had a problem with mine drawing bugs so I don't know what to tell you there! 🙄
I shop nearby also. Publix across the street from work and Aldi down the street. Kroger on my way home. Super Walmart and Sam's share parking lot less than 3 miles away. Not everyone is so lucky though
Yes, indeed and I am incredibly thankful that I have access to so many different stores so close to one another, and try not to overlook the blessing that it is.
Thank you for this clear and simple and very helpful video. I have often had potatoes go bad before I can use them all (I live alone), so this is a technique I will put to use immediately! I live in an apartment, so I don’t have a basement, but I’ll figure something out.
Great deals 🎉. I shop at different stores too. wherever I can go to get great deals, I'm there 😂. I have a big family of 8, so my husband and I have to budget very much. We shop at Sam's club, BJ'S, Costco, Kroger, Walmart, and Publix. I shop at Kroger and Publix weekly and the other stores monthly. These stores are on the route or very close to my kids school 😊.
Love it! Good for you! And yes, a large family means budgeting and careful shopping! 🧐 And I am thankful you have lots of stores to grab the deals at too! 🙌
I love this information, so thank you! I no longer have a basement, but I’m willing to try this method in the coolest darkest place I can find. I also want to add that in my opinion, the freshest potatoes are at Sam’s Club. Grocery store potatoes in my experience go bad much faster, and usually have more blemishes to work around. So I’ll be doing the storing method with potatoes from Sam’s.
I would agree with you! I have noticed the same that my grocery store potatoes don't last nearly as long as my Sam's potatoes. An astute observation! 🙌
I do think it depends on the batch of potatoes. But I bought potatoes last November and they were still good in February when we were finishing them up after storing them this way. That's 3 months or several months in my humble experience. ☺️
Humidity does make it a more of a challenge for you and your potatoes! Try the box in the darkest spot you have. Otherwise, some store them in the fridge, although it isn't usually recommended. I would probably just not store as many if humidity was a problem.
I have tried layered potatoes in super dry sawdust stored in a cardboard box in a cool dark basement. Some of the potatoes sprouted, some got soft and storing them this way did not seem to make the potatoes last any longer. I found storing potatoes in the bottom vegetable drawer of my refrigerator made them last the longest
Do what works for you! Storing in the refrigerator is generally not recommended as it changes the starches of the potatoes but for some people, who live in a higher humidity area, you have to do what works. And if the refrigerator works for you, go for it!

Thank you for sharing this old trick and wisdom. Though potatoes are cheap when on sale, I have to pass the deal because they are bulk sale (10 lbs) and no way I can finish them in time as I live alone. I will try your method, thanks. Someone share the wisdom of separate storage of onion. First question, what will happen in storing onions and potatoes together? Secondly, should onions always be stored separately with other root vegetables?
Potatoes and onions when stored together will cause potatoes to sprout and age faster, and the onions will soften too. And yes, onions should always be kept separate from root vegetables. I keep mine in a bowl on the counter.
