We help you turn organic waste into food for the soil. We started in 2014 to help new vermicomposters start off right with vermicomposting. The food waste revolution is just beginning. Get onboard with us!
You are being lied to by the chemical mafia corrupted usda again. They obviously plan to make more regulations and sell more poison at your expense with these psyops. The original American name for this beneficial earthworm is Alabama Jumping Worm. Its been called that over 100 years. When i was a boy in 1970 old men always fished with them and I did too. They made Alabama the richest farmland in the country.
Very interesting, thank you for all the information. we feed with murzi worm chow and are pleased with the results its a hobby for me so the cost of the tests would be to much.
Great video Steve! The worm community owes a lot to your hard work, research, and spotlighting others who are making advancements in this field. Keep hammering brothaman!
I just came across your RU-vid channel and I gotta tell you “I am in hook line and sinker “ I really appreciate your no B.S. guidance way of educating the community.. 🙏🏼🪱🪱🪱
4:07 I’ve had so many tomato sprouts over the years. To the point that we always know which potted plants have castings 😂. Fun experiment to follow Steve. Thanks 🤙
Interesting little mini-lesson on the fruit flies 👍🏻 Leftover apple & banana peel is expected - but leftover lettuce seemed a bit unexpected. I think you made the right choice in skipping the addition of more foods :)
I think it is impossible not to have sprouts in a worm bin unless you are just feeding worm chow., I just leave them and they disappear. Used some unscreened castings in a bed I am preparing for my garlic, I have pumpkins, tomatoes, squash plus a variety of other plants coming up. Actually it is a good thing, these plants are acting as a cover crop before I go to plant the garlic in a couple weeks. All I will do is cut the stems, leave the roots in the soil and use the plants as a mulch, a Win Win! Stay Well!!!
Are you using special type of coffee filters? I noticed mine take forever to break down and I always think they are plastic when I see them. (They are the white ones)
Mine are brown (unbleached) but I don't think that makes a difference in how long it takes them to break down. I do kind of shred them by hand before I put them in the bin.
I turn sprouts over into the worm bin to feed the worms or, in the case of leek seeds that sprouted, pulled them out and planted them in my garden. ~ Sandra
There’s a chance your potatoes might have sprouted. That’s what happened to me this year and I was able to take the potato and actually throw it in the ground.
Is there a vermicompost book that kinda covers what you went over in this video? I would like to have that on my shelf so I can apply some of the tests when I have time and compost ready to test. I also like to read this kind of stuff so I can underline things and find them easier when I need that piece of info.
Steve, this video made me smile! You sounded so excited when you were doing it. It feels great to get your hands back in the worm bin and see the progress, doesn't it? Good luck to your worm farm!
Excellent presentation, love a good vermicompost geek-out! Making vermicompost is so easy, its almost boring. Steve's presentation adds a little spice to the process, as well as an objective way to measure the goodness of our vermicompost. Thanks UWC. The soil microbiome (good or bad) is the future of our planet. If we embrace it, the future is bright...Thanks UWC.
I love my urban worm bag! It’s been operating nonstop since 2018 and I knew absolutely nothing about worm farming when I started. So thank you for your videos and advice that have helped me be successful in spite of my own lack of knowledge about the whole process!
This is something that I have been wondering about. If the research continues we may be able to learn what to feed our worms to produce the best castings for a specific plant. that would be amazing
Never realized you could get so in depth and technical about worm castings, very informative and a lot of food for thought. I'm just trying to get started with this to try to improve my gardening.
Interesting and informative video, thanks for sharing! I got my worms from Uncle Jim's and when I went back I saw that he does tell you you're ordering a mix. That said, like you're telling people, the blues really are a great worm, I really like them. I've actually never experienced a "mass exodus" and I've had my mix since 2020. I do not use lids. My bins are DIY, storage bins, in the basement. I don't know what's different that mine don't run like that. I run a dehumidifier down there. I like to keep my bins deeper than not. I am now starting a bin just for blues, in a slightly smaller bin, so we'll see. Again, thank you!
For someone thinking of getting into worm farming as a single person I was afraid I had to feed the worms a lot more than just a cup a week or so. I am hoping to get set up soon, to join the world of worm farming.
