On this channel I share and discuss the things I collect, mainly stamps but also coins, banknotes, postcards and other oddities. My grandfather left me his stamp collection many years ago. I pulled it out from under my bed which sparked my interest again.
After 6 months I had already blown ~15k on my stamp collection. I bought two filing cabinets and recreated the 2021 Scott catalog folder by folder so that I could properly sort all of the collections I've bought.
I have recently been sorting and cataloging my grandfather's stamps into a few albums as a passion project which has taken a lot of time and effort :).
@@KylesStamps Thanks a ton!! this would be me out a ton honestly def gave the video a like a subbed to your channel! Thanks again!! Amazing video by the way!! Keep up the amazing work and thanks for teaching me a ton also in the video hah
For the pen... Buy very large mount strips, largest you can get. The cut those in half horizontally along the split. You now have double the strips. Use the pen on the upper corners to close the mount and you are on your way.
Hi Kyle! Yipeee, another Cabinets episode. I enjoyed it as always. You have an interesting lot of DDR stamps. Like you I also liked the ship stamps (24:08), especially when one looks more closely and see all the fine detail. And then I liked the bird stamps 43:30, first of all just because they have birds on them. 🙂 These 53:41 Ghana ship stamps are also nice. Thanks for an interesting video!
:) I love the cabinet episodes! I never know what I'm going to find in my folders. The ship stamps were a highlight for me. Thanks for watching and as always I love your positivity, Charnie! I hope you are well!
Great video Kyle as always. I collected German occupation and Colonial expansion as well as Japanese occupation. I went nuts on Bird topicals among others. Great hobby. Keep up the great work. Lee
Hi Kyle- I notice you are wearing cotton gloves - Now I am not trying to be a smarty - as I used to wear them when handling first day covers etc - but Specifically, the Library of Congress recommends the following: “Before handling any collection item, thoroughly wash and dry hands. Contrary to widespread belief, gloves are not necessarily recommended to handle rare or valuable books. Also The main reasoning behind wearing gloves was to protect document surfaces from marks made by oily or sweaty hands. In fact, if you clean and dry your hands before handling archival documents this risk is significantly reduced. - I hope you find that interesting - I did :) - anyway - I enjoyed the stamps and all your vids
Cool info, I hadn't heard any of that before. I sometimes do wear cotton gloves but in this specific video I was wearing nitrile kitchen gloves... I switched because I lose dexterity with the tongs when using the cotton gloves, can't hold onto them well enough. I wonder your thoughts on nitrile gloves, I can't think of any issues with them although I haven't researched it yet.
I like this video of yours, this is the way on how to unbox or showing what you received plus the explanations, stories or how and what you feel about the stamps, great vid.
Love the vids I watch them all. I’m fairly new to the hobby. What stamp app identifier were you using in your last few videos and what’s the best place to quickly look up stamps like the Scott’s catalog? I have most of my US stamps done but am trying to get my very early German through current stamp collection identified and put together but a lot of these seems like there are different eras and I struggle with identifying them. Any guidance would be appreciated.
Thanks! The app is called Colnect Stamp Identifier, it works well and they also have a free catalog you can use on colnect.com. Stampworld is another free online catalog people use as an alternative. I am no expert with German stamps and identify them like I do any other country, just looking them up one at a time. The app will probably be a huge help for you. I find it is right a lot of the time but it can still be wrong too, so you kind of need to prove it is right by checking perfs, watermarks, etc.
Great show. A lot of GDR stamps are cancelled cto. with original gum on the backside, so in most cases postally used stamps of this country are more valuable. Getting foreign western currencies like $, DM or GBP was a big thing in this former socialist country, that´s the reason why they issued tons of different topical sets, similar to other Warsaw Pact states like Hungary, Romania, Poland, Bulgaria etc. Today it´s quite easy to purchase a complete GDR collection, though the valuable key sets are from the early 50s like the Marx/Engels minisheets. Greets from GER, U.
You were right on both accounts. The Napoleon stamp is Charles-Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, Napoleon III, not the one most think about. This one came later.
Please help me I have a collection of stamps from all over the world I want to sell them. Will you buy from me? Please help me to sell them. Thank you.
Hi Kyle - thanks so much - very enjoyable to see these stamps. I have some pretty old Japanese Chrysanthemum stamps on the most recent video on my channel you may be interested in - anyway thanks - I enjoy all your videos and I hope your boss gives you sone better hours soon - Jeff
@@KylesStamps love the videos, I just inherited a massive well organized collection US and international, rekindling a hobby I started with my grandfather as a kid. But your videos are helping me learn a lot!
Wow, wow, wow! It is an amazing gift! Lee is certainly a kind and generous person! But, as you said, you are also giving very enjoyable content to your viewers. Going through this collection gave a good overview of Japanese stamps. They are indeed beautiful. Thanks for showing us the stamps, Kyle. Take care!
Hi guys, I got so many comments about a sash going over your shoulder that I wanted to post the definition from Wikipedia: A sash is a large and usually colorful ribbon or band of material worn around the human body, either draping from one shoulder to the opposing hip and back up, or else encircling the waist. I guess it can be used both ways!
Wow! What an amazing gift! From someone who uses Scott albums....um...those pages are not cheap and are awesome. If u r not going to use them...there is someone out there that definitely would love them. I'm sure someone would also love all those printed album pages, with or without the stamps. I think I'd be close to paralyzed if someone gifted me a collection like that and (the way I am) feel indebted. You have a fan and 1/2 with an awesome heart!
Glad you liked it Kyle. Makes me feel good about it with your appreciation. You're a good guy and I think all of us subscribers to your channel appreciate you. Hopefully some other people can send some stuff to you as well. Keeps this great hobby alive with people like you on social media. Lee
@@leesautomotive1737 👍😁 I am grateful! It will make this album a bit more special with your contribution. I will put a note somewhere at the beginning mentioning your gift. Thanks again Lee!
I always think of sending duplicates to creators of youtube pages like this...but I don't have anything special that they would want. Also, I can't afford the shipping. Wish I could find a local world-wide collector that wants to trade. I'm in 2 stamp clubs in WI, but the youngest member in both and my offerings would be laughed at:/
Awesome and very generous collection of Japanese stamps, sent by a viewer from Virginia. 20:56 That´s a stamp from the early KOBAN series, cancelled with a BOTA cancellation. Botas are highly sought after by specialists on classic Japanese stamps, and there´s also special literature about them. Greets from GER, U.
Hey Kyle, really enjoy your videos, thanks for putting forth the effort to produce them. - I was wondering, it used to be "Kyle's Cabinets", but now it's "Kyle's Stamps". What happened to the cabinets? Did you get rid of them? I thought it was a great way to sort and store stamps, and was thinking of getting some cabinets for myself, but maybe it's not since you got rid of yours?
The channel has always been Kyle's Stamps but I have a video series "Kyle's Cabinets" where we go through my folders one at a time. The series is still going strong and there are plenty of countries to go through. Here is a link to the playlist ru-vid.com/group/PLz94WDSEY5EtVxz6IIT7APoNdt3rJ8k_9
Yes, those of us who do hand sewing still use thimbles. Most young people are no longer taught to sew therefore probably are not familiar with thimbles.
Wow, Kyle, great video! Thank you very much for working step for step through the identification process. Each time you do it, I pick up a bit more. Hopefully when I get to the identification stage I will hop and skip through it. 😆 By the way: the transparent Vario pages with the duplicates are indeed beautiful!
Thanks!! When you do start identifying I'm sure you will do better than someone starting off with no knowledge. I found the catalogs a bit annoying at first. I also love the clear pages. Part of me kind of worries they may actually end up my favorite part of the album... haha!
My sorting routine: dip un boiling water. The staplw separate raipdidlt from their envelope then, risne of in a soapy solution, then placce in luke warm water, then place in drying book. Blank side to loplyester page, printed design to ti ck paper. Close book abn store under 3 encyclopaedia volmes for 3 or more days. Perfect every time. Doesn't work so well for selkf-adhesuves.
Yo, I've been doing the same thing with the clear pages. And then I take black cornstalk and foot behind it if I really wanna accent it out. Nah, like right up when white on the black hard sock, it looks really sharp.Othello white pencils.I love othello white pencils
Great video on how to use the Scott catalog! Are you using odor-free fluid? Or does it really matter once the stamps dry? I recently got the Google translate phone app that uses the camera to identify foreign writing. It worked well with the few Japanese stamps I have. Keep up the excellent work.
Thank you! I'm using Ronsonol lighter fluid, it definitely has an odor but after it dries I cannot tell on the stamps. Using Google Translate to decipher the languages is a great way to do it. I was using it on covers at some point! It isn't perfect but it sure can help sometimes for sure!
Great show. The Japanese call these definitives the TAZAWA set, and they invite you to get a specialized collection on different papers, colors, watermarks, plate errors and cancellations. And they also got some pretty neat specialized catalogues written in Japanese and English. Greets from GER, U.
Hi Kyle, the Lighthouse Vario stock sheets are numbered with a # followed with a C or an S. Examples: 1C, 6C, and 1S, 6S. The letter C means clean, clear, transparent while the letter S means SCHWARZ which means BLACK in English. Ever hear the name SCHWARZENEGGER?
Ever wish you could go back in time to certain countries and tell the people in charge of producing stamps " Knock it off! Be more creative!"? You know the saying how a drop in the ocean or the flutter of the wing of a dragonfly can change things? How many stamp collectors have lost hours/ days of their lives to decisions people made in the past which make certain stamps so difficult to catalog? Since I use Scott pages, I often run into the fact that there are not spots for these types of nuances. Perhaps I will deal with "fun" challenges like those when I'm in a nursing home with nothing better to do...but right now i need to take care of more pressing aspects of life. Who am I kidding? I DO get overly engrossed in cataloging like u have just done. Thanks for making me feel like this is ok:) Note to self: re-examine Japan stamps.
Yea we all get to reap the rewards of their decisions, lol. If you specialize in specific countries I imagine you would get good at identifying the harder issues. For someone who collects worldwide like me it can be difficult to deal with the bologna each one has to offer with early issues.
