As smart as lip is,he is not smart in making a decision and is not always aware of the situation he is in,and the fact that he always rely on himself and never listen is what really wreck his life and made him so lost of all his family.
Lip has borderline personality disorder. He is too impulsive. He doesn’t take a moment to think how his actions have affected others. He thinks that he is right all the time. He should have been nicer with Fiona
The only reason he's not getting more parts is that there are no more Dustin Hoffman/early pacino parts any more. Movie casting directors have gone full 6`2 chirs evan lookalike, so boring.
Lip’s main problem is that he knew he was smart and had potential, but he just didn’t want to do anything about it. If he truly wanted a future for himself, then he would’ve stayed away from karen and wouldn’t have dated his teacher in college. One of the reasons why Lip criticized Fiona so much is because she was starting to make her life a little better and he regretted not doing the same for him.
I think Lip’s problem was always himself and the environment that shaped him. Even from the start of the series, he was constantly drinking and smoking because that’s what every adult had used as a coping mechanism around him. Yeah, he was smart and had potential, but they were the ones to pile all of the pressure on him to come up with smart solutions for their problems and to be their inevitable golden goose via college. Yet, they also were unable to prepare him for the stress of that environment and for the ongoing disasters at home. When he was dealing with disasters at home, he was in familiar territory. He knew how to cope with that kind of struggle, to an extent. He had more control of his life when he was there, or at least that’s how he felt. College was unfamiliar and like a whole other universe to him, with different rules. Hell, all of “normal” life was like a whole other universe compared to where he grew up. I think he was, on some level, always afraid of failing so he never tried to succeed. He was afraid of not living up to their expectations and of not being able to function in “normal” society after all. Plus, he inherited some pretty impressive anger issues with a disdain for psychiatric treatment. He was destined to struggle. I don’t think it was that he didn’t want to be different or to try harder; I think he just didn’t truly know how to function long-term in a setting outside of where he grew up. He had always had run-ins with the law and authority issues. He had a reckless streak, and he was rarely ever held truly accountable for the repercussions. Lip was truly just unprepared for the hard side of academia and of living as a full adult. People think the hard part of college is passing classes, but the real hard part is learning how to balance the parts of your life and to keep yourself together. Lip was never prepared for that. Intelligence and potential are only as good as the important life lessons one learns along the way. Unfortunately, Lip always ran in the same habits, which were only really useful on the South Side.
@@karleighrock593sadly though these actions are understandable,he’s desperate for someone to love him, beaten down by the education system that penalises the poor by making us work ten times as hard to get half as far.as for the alcoholism, look at his life, the pressures and roadblocks,no support system, responsibilities beyond his years etc…very few make it out of that sort of situation, that being the point of the show.the point that the poor/working class always get fucked and that the system is designed to keep us down.of course he was jealous of Fiona, but academics didn’t influence her success ,she worked hard and got lucky.lip works hard and gets fucked. Also just to add on,with the shit this kids seen, how could he not end up abusing substances to cope?!
