Thing is, it’s just objectively cool for the audience to see a band this huge. And no other band on earth can do what Allen does. Add very good musical chops and clever set design, and it’s a hell of a thing.

I've not personally seen how it's done, but suspect it's very carefully, with MUCH attention to detail... and with a LOT of perseverance! My understanding is special software is used to design the formations and movements between them. I believe it can print out an individual 'drill plan' for each member.
Don't they realize that the band being this size makes it impossible for anyone to take this band seriously? This is a gimmick band. This just shows how the city of Allen decided not to build a badly needed 2nd HighSchool just so they could gain some sort of cheap publicity and their Athletics could compete against their Plano, Frisco, and Mckinney neighbors. Allen HS is the "Finish this 72oz Steak in 30 mins and get your picture on the wall and a Tshirt" of restaurants. Allen HS- Huge size-Mediocre Quality. Think I'm over reacting? AllenHS could split into two schools and both schools would be 6A schools. A truly PATHETIC way to be successful in UIL competition.
Wow! Sounds like such sour grapes. So, which one of the cities Allen competes against do you live in? Since Allen city proper is not sprawled out like Plano, Frisco and McKinney, Allen residents voted to have a single High School. And if Allen HS was split into 2, each would have enrollment just over HALF of Plano East. Since current Allen HS enrollment is not much larger than Plano East, how do you explain why our BAND is so much larger? And if no one takes it seriously, why was the Eagle band invited to participate in the 2016 Tournament of the Roses in Pasadena, CA? Please... take your sour grapes elsewhere!
I graduated from Southlake Carroll in 2006. Southlake has a population of 30,000 and even at that population we considered building another HS. Allen has a population of 102,000 (2017 figure). East Plano lacks any substantial affluence and schools lacking affluence usually doesn't fund the music program as well, not to mention a different culture in lower income areas. I'll answer your Pasadena question with another question. Why do you think they invited Allen's band instead of the higher rated bands like The Woodlands or LD Bell? Do you think it's because Pasadena wanted the highest quality band or simply just wanted the spectacle of a large band. Allen was invited because it's big, not good. If there was a band in Ohio with 20 more members than Allen's band then they would have been invited. As far as sour grapes, there are none here. Southlake Carroll constantly wins the UIL Lonestar Cup and we have 8 Football State titles. All that with a population of 30,000, what do you know?
Well, well, well... what I know is, you should know ALL about what affluence can buy. And you can brag all you want about Carroll's successes... just goes to show Allen having the largest high school does NOT mean their sports teams, or band, will be successful... in fact, your statement is evidence per-capita salary level is the reason for Carroll's successes. Wouldn't you agree? Successful high school teams have a LOT to do with good coaching and well run pre-high school sports programs... not just size. PESH is almost as large as AHS, yet they loose because they're not affluent enough... right? And their band is small because they're not affluent enough? The Allen Band is so large because the kids LOVE it! So does the community. Kids are proud to be band members and work so hard to be the best they can, despite being so large. It's like a large family. Directors could pear down the size if they chose, to be more competitive during UIL... being large is more of a challenge. They were invited to the parade in Pasadena because they auditioned for it, and were willing to put forth tremendous effort to hold many fundraising events in order to fund the trip, and put in additional practices well past normal marching season to participate. And YES! They're "The largest band in the land!"
While I don't know much about affluence or populations or whatnot, your original statement of it being a pathetic way to be successful baffles me, since it sort of contradicts what you're saying about them NOT being successful? In any case, I'll agree Allen's band isn't the best, and the size definitely allows quite a few who don't care as much in. However, not everything HAS to be about being the best or being professional quality. The band students have fun marching and playing at football games, and that's all that should matter. I don't have a problem with you criticizing the band, but I think a more respectful tone should be taken, as insulting a group of high school students - teenagers, minors - doesn't seem like a very ethical course of action. Also consider this was from two years ago? Their more recent show, while still not the best, was more impressive from what I could tell. In any case, this thread as a whole has a somewhat disrespectful undertone from both parties that isn't really necessary.
This is the Most Amazing H.S. Band I have ever seen! I have watched them for years. Their Sound is AWESOME! I LOVE this band.... and my kids don't even go to this school. When they come to our H. Nice to hear those from other high schools appreciate the Eagles Band. Our son played trombone all 4 years of high school, and graduated in Spring 2016. I must say, however, the 2016 UIL "Cyclone" performance was the best I've seen, after a new director came in that had DCI experience (Drum Corp International). Hopefully the 2017 program will improve on that. It's VERY difficult to design a program for a band so large.
I'm in the flower mound high school band and I thought cut through a and doing work next to the band kids was hard but looking at this band I'm like holy crap I can't even imagine.
You have to hear this band live... and comparing them to DCI is ridiculous... they're a High School marching band. Oh, and to you blow hards... LOUDER does not mean BETTER, either...
LOUDER isn't always better... they're not a DCI group, in which every member is a great marcher AND instrumentalist. They're a high school marching band.
Steven C Jones I get both points. They sound amazing and they're already pretty dang loud but they can be way louder if they wanted. Not saying it's already not sounding awesome
Steven C Jones Plus Allen High School is the ONLY high school in Allen ,Texas(Population is around 90-100k ),so the community needed a bigger stadium.And the stadium brings in a lot of money since every game gets sold out every year.I would like to go to Allen,the atmosphere there and tailgating must be pretty fun.And it's cool seeing a huge school like Allen,looks like small D1 college lmao
this band is too big marching band is about the the formations and the programs, a band that size is too jumbled and cramped up there's no fluid motion
But that doesn't mean that we should just stop all together right? Yes, we certainly are a big band, but we love it. I know where you're coming from, but we're just a high school band.
Shouldn't judge us off this performance. The band went under a massive change, in terms of marching technique, and the way we operate - in 2013 it was more a fun band, but the directors are currently trying to transition it into a much more competitive band. In 2016, Allen placed 9th in their Area C prelims and 8th in the finals. (Mind you, Area C is the most difficult Area in Texas, it has multiple bands with loads of state titles). 2016 was much better. And the show for 2017? Already much better.
altx you guys should do a thing where you have to audition to be in the marching band, so only the best make it in and they make badass shows. i mean idk the rules in texas (in Florida marching band is required) but it would be cool

Love it! And this is only 3/4 of the band. The freshmen return to the freshmen center after early morning practice so they aren't involved in the pep rallys.
Alen highschool band is probably the by far most boring band I have ever ever ever heard big band what ever it's the excitement you make on the field and I'm just not feeling it with this band. I know Allen texas very well. Allen if you didn't know is the closest to Dubai there is in Texas . Put that a bunch kids with their rich papas and some instructors that probably fall asleep their performances but do cause it pays well and boom the Allen texas band 😕😔😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴
