Hi there! 👋 I'm Dayna, and love creating, collecting, and reading zines!
Zines are self-published, non-commercial #DIY publications, typically made using a copy machine. They can be about almost anything, and are a great way to express yourself and find community. On my channel, I'll be sharing some of my favorite zines with you, as well as glimpses at my own artistic process, tutorials, and more.
I also review zines over on Instagram (@zinereviews), host a monthly Zine Club IRL, help plan my city's annual zine fest, and teach workshops and programming. In short... zines have sorta taken over my life, but I wouldn't have it any other way! 💗
Zines, to me, are all about creativity and community. I'm always down to trade zines, and to make new pen-pal friends. If you're interested in trading zines or being pen-pals, send me a message at daynamoth@gmail.com and we can trade addresses... or just drop a letter in the mail to:

This was a very fun and relaxing video. I watched while I was cutting out some of my own zines. Your really giving me a reason to get a tonner printer as I get more into zine making. Saving on ink would be nice.
Thank you - I'm glad we could make zines together, even if it was by proxy! 😜 And yes - I def. recommend checking out laser printers... toner is so much more affordable than ink.
oh my gosh I really need that collating video because I have SUCH a hard time conceptualizing how the pages are supposed to be arranged in something like a half or quarter zine and Especially how to print them (flip along long or short edge?). It is beyond confusing to me. but also! Thank you for another inspiring video!!! I love your channel so so much, your voice and attitude are so relaxing and your videos are exactly my speed to process, understand, and enjoy.
Thank you so much for the kind words 💗 And I feel ya! I’ve come up with a collating process that works really well for me and helps me visualize the page order setup… I hope that it’ll work for you too! Tentatively, that video is going to be up at the start of June (hopefully a lil earlier!)
Loved learning about your laminated stars!! You make the coolest zines!! Every time I hear goldenrod, I think of Lisa Simpson... "I'd like 25 copies on goldenrod, 25 on canary, 25 on saffron, and 25 on paella."
Thank you! I really, really enjoyed "La Bola De Cristal"! And my apologies for the mispronunciation. I'll add a correction to the video description, and try and figure out a way to note it in the video...
Thank you so much for sharing! Your videos have been a big inspiration to get me to start filming again and making zines. Now my zine collection has grown crazy big
@@catmothcrow Yes, I have filmed it and shared it here on RU-vid. I recently went to a zine fest here in Georgia which is something I also shared here.
I love this series so much, and I am thinking about doing something similar. My TBR stack(s) is... big, and I feel something like this would not only be fun but would help with indecision difficulties. Plus, pretty dice!
Yea, it can be intimidating, since zines can be about anything! So many possibilities! Writing about my life and interests is how I got started, and I feel that perzines are always a great place to start. Or you could play a round of roll for zine (skipping the first roll and going straight for the “Make a Zine” prompts)… heck, sometimes I’ll just fold up a mini zine template and start doodling on it, just letting my pen take me where it wants to go.
@@catmothcrowI turned a couple of my poems into zines. I did a couple as Penpal letters, too. I want to do at least one this month since I heard about #minimarch😊
almost every zine i’ve made since i recently got into them has been a classic 8-page mini. it’s just so easy to grab a sheet of paper and make something when i want to get an idea out! love all of the ones you showed here. didn’t know about mini zine march, but definitely wanna make something for it now ^_^
Yay! It was so cool to see this video pop up and all the zine goodness. <3 I'd love to trade if you're interested in swapping with someone in Australia. Happy MIni-Zine March!
Thank you so much for the lovely review of Witches' Brew #9!! I'd love to trade and send you my newest issues if you're up for that. Also, I didn't know the creator of This Might Hurt Tarot made zines! 😲
I made a 16 page zine out of a big 18 X 24 piece of Canson Mis Tientes paper that I cut and folded. I loved the process, and the zine was about my deconversion, which is pretty emotional for me to deal with. I want to do a part two, which I started. I got as far as designing the backgrounds-and I have my theme, but for some reason, I stopped. Not ready to move forward with that one yet. So, maybe my way out of this block is to do a mini like this. Maybe combine it with some etegami . . . Thanks for the encouragement.
@@catmothcrowetegami is a Japanese practice of a small (postcard-sized) very loose, ink and wash drawing. You don’t sketch any part of your subject out beforehand, or do much planning, you just create an image in ink and wash, and it’s DONE, and the original idea was, you then send it to someone you care about as a postcard, no matter how it turned out. That’s probably the most important part of etegami according to the originator of etegami. The looseness and imperfection of etegami was in reaction to so many of the very precise, rule-laden Japanese creative arts, like ikebana, or the tea ceremony. There are several RU-vid videos about it.
Thanks! I just traded with a French zinester named Noam (they're @noamclothes on IG and Tiktok) and their zines were super cool - I highly recommend checking them out.
Love the Forecast! We got their In the Shadow of Two Gunmen record when we went to Austin 9 years ago (we're from the Netherlands). It will always make me nostalgic to that city and our friends there. Do you have your roll for zine tables available for downoad somewhere? Such a great idea.
That record and that town are both ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (although, WOW has Austin changed a bunch in the past decade... have you been back since? It is so different. Not in a bad way, just... different.) And sure do; you can download them at catmothcrow.com/diy-roll-for-zine/
I love the idea of the video. As someone who finds it hard to figure out a topic to talk about when making a zine, this rolling dices idea might be it for me. The design turned out great and to speak up about a topic that seems to be more and more censored on social media is a great and courageous thing to do.
You should give it a try (and if you do, I'd love to see what zine you come up with!) And thanks - I have to admit, I even found myself censoring my speech in the voiceover, nervous that if I said the G-word, RU-vid would take the video down or something. The situation is so grave, and that the social media companies will censor us just for sharing the facts of what is occurring is terrifying (but unsurprising).
