That’s a good point. I’ve also noticed that the unbearably slow, low substance (gameplay-wise) games that have a Hollywood movie-level artsy-fartsy story always tend to score way higher than they should. I genuinely wonder if that has to do with upper middle class west coast people and art schools or something lol. But either way they eat that shit up. Not saying those games aren’t good sometimes, but they end up feeling like the video game equivalent of Oscar bait, and it’s becoming more and more obvious.
They need to stop doing one fast play through and calling it a day. I’m going to play this game for potentially years; one first-time speed run doesn’t tell me much about the game.
This is why RU-vidrs like GMan is one of the go to FPS guys. Even if you don't like his playstyle, you can gauge it better as a fan of that genre. Even Mortismal Gaming, who definitely leans towards RPG and strategy, makes a full effort to get 100 percent and gives you a solid review. RU-vid literally opened thw door for great reviews from some great reviewers, and for gamers to find their niche and focus on those games.
I think the premise is false from the offset it's not that Japanese people don't like PC gaming in fact it's more than doubled in players in about 3 years time. But if you do go over there like my cousins in Osaka they aren't about what's the most powerful or whatever. They tend to build smaller micro ATX and mini ITX type builds that take up less space. They tend to prefer form over function in most cases. But PC gaming is much more rapidly growing now in Japan than it was I think things like Steam Deck and all the handheld PC's definitely helped on that end. Also Japan is really the last Asian country that console gaming is hugely popular in and it's shrinking there now.
Well, because it is a game review, which people watch so that they know if they should buy the game or not. And that shouldn’t include bias, or if it does, be truthful about which part is bias, or else people will get the wrong impression of the game. And reviewing the game with bias will ruin that process
Honestly I think reviewers should stick to specific genres. One reviewer only reviews shooters so they can tell if a game is a good shooter, another reviewer is all about puzzle games so they can tell if it's a good puzzle game. Another issue with this whole thing is that the entire economic process of all of this tends to hinge on day 1 sales and player counts as well as pre-orders, when in reality it can take a month or more for players to really settle in, get good, learn all the nuances of the game and then finally have a matured perspective on the game that's accurate. On top of this so many games are launching barely half finished as live services and the quality of the game at any point can fluctuate wildly. By the time the game's lifecycle comes to an end and all the bugs are patched out and it has enough content to sustain players for years the player count is petering out and support is getting dropped. So any review at one particular point in time is going to be irrelevant down the line.
Jesus have you even ever read a movie review from a moderately big press? The most commonly used scoring system for a movie review is a 4-star or 5-star system. NYT is a outliner as they stopped giving a review score completely sometime in the past, but every other major press doing a movie review I've read has a score. Not just a thumbs up or down.
Meanwhile metacritic user reviews: "I love the bible but hate this game I don't like paul in the bible I hate racing and I hate paul" - Littlefelicity "I" - SimonG "THIS GAME IS UNACCEPTABLE AND UNREALISTIC HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO RELATE TO LINK WHEN I LOOK NOTHING LIKE HIM??? ITS ALSO SUPER CONDESCENDING THAT LINK GETS TWO GIRLS TO LIKE HIM WHEN IN REALITY NO FEMALE HAS TALKED TO ME IN FOREVER 0/10" - Tywin Oh what would we do without these oh so precious metacritic reviews
Part of the truth on why the japanese industry doesn't want to relate with PC gaming, it's all about Piracy and Emulation courses. But for this actual Era, consoles are not so popular than before anymore. Today people and industry wants a more Movil and PC Gaming experiences, rather than to still on consoles and it's limitations rules. Money has been more precised for today standards, and the people wants a PC or an a Movil rather than Consoles counterpart, because they are not so worthy than before anymore, but still relevant on a matter.
OPM (U.S. Official Playstation Monthly), any score for the PS1, I feel was very accurate. Did not matter who made the game, even a top notch publisher. If that particular game sucked, they let you know. It was strange sometimes to play a game demo, think it was the bees knees, read their review of the game in a later issue and think the reviewer had to make a mistake, because the demo was so good. Then actually buy the game and go... They were actually right. 😅
I will always say TLOU2 is a great game and it doesn't deserve the hate. What happened tp Joel is sad but its both necessary and realistic in that world. Plus I can feel empathy for Abby bc we forget how many Joel killed in TLOU1. This game shows us that even npc have lifes and ppl they care about, even normal enemies cry out the name of their dead comrades and swear vengance on you! Truly amazing but thats my opinion
The problem is that mainstream media is controlled by untalented people called, Leftists. All their judge is based if the product please their ideologies or not.
What's funny is that Persona 4 Golden was shown multiple times having a high review. it's a 70 hour game, minimum. Only the story, and first-daying dungeons. Even i, when i play it again, usually take roughly a year to finish it. To be fair i play on the hardest difficult, but still.
My favourite games are Dwarf Fortress, OSRS and GW2. I just don't like games 😔, every game that anyone else said "it's cool" I don't like. If I would rank games from metacritic with ±9 rating, I wouldnt rate them any higher than 6. It's just people, who don't understand the genre or don't care about story make bad reviews.
