One of the most generic genres out there. If when I started playing guitar I started playing progressive metal instead of black metal, now I would be a better guitar player and composer.
Pick thickness changes how hard you have to hit the strings to get a heavy pick attack. The thicker the pick the lighter you can pick and still get a heavy pick attack. That being said at the end of the day its all personal preference I use 1.25mm to 1.5mm picks on electric and a 1mm Hetfeild white fang on acoustic.
It's interesting to me to see how you and others pick with 3 fingers, that's not a technique I would have thought of.. but yeah it's not for me.. 2 finger, gripping the pick between the thumb and the first joint of the curved pointer finger works for me. Music theory.. I think it's been useful for me, to understand patterns that make certain things sound alike, and to expose myself to new sounds.. like making a scale that doesn't follow the rules of music theory.. you can come up with some interesting sounds, but yeah most of the time it's best to just forget about theory entirely and write what sounds good.
Neck pick up missing as well as the pick up selector, now that's very Black Metal. 🤘🏼I'm realizing how Punk Rock Black Metal really is. 😂 From the DIY/ grittiness and attitude to the raw/ aggressive sound, very similar. I'm most talking early 80's hardcore punk, before someone jumps on me and says "punk rock is very slow and tame compared to black metal!" Early 80's hardcore punk and earlier black metal sound VERY similar, minus the vocals for the most part.
