Listen I grew up outside of Boston and Bobby Orr was God and still is to me, But Wayne Gretzky dominated a sport like nobody ever has. If he was marginally greater you may have a good point that the goalies weren't up to snuff and the defenses weren't as good or blah blah blah. I mean but think of this stat, If he never scored a goal he'd still have more points than anybody else That is dominance on a scale that I've never seen we've never seen. I still live outside of Boston And I'm old lol I've I've seen Brady, I've seen Jordan, bird and magic, barry bonds Mark McGwire, lemieux whatever, and lemieux might have been the most physically dominant player of that era but nobody can compare to Gretzky's pure clairvoyance. And the whole argument that he wasn't that fast and his shot wasn't that hard blah blah, nobody could stop him. Is the product a better game now than it ever has been? sure because the influx of players from from Finland in Sweden and Russia and etc but He was so dominant that I don't even think we can have a discussion about his greatness.
Gretzky scored an unbelievable creative and talented goal in Boston one nite. Behind Boston’s net with players coming from both direction, Gretzky flipped the puck just over the top of the net which then hit the back of the goaltender and into the net. I don’t know if he practiced it but it has to be a one in a million goal. A real thing of beauty to see for the true hockey fan.
For all those saying 99 wouldn't be a superstar in todays game. Saying that the goalies were weak. Saying that his competition especially defense were weak. If he GREW UP and trained with all the same advancements in training and nutrition as everyone else today, he would still be the GOAT and it wouldn't even be close! The cream always rises to the top. If you still think otherwise, maybe tell me: Why was not a single other player FROM his ERA, even in the same stratosphere! Not one player produced anywhere NEAR his number. Yet all thos guys woukd have had "shitty" goalies , and "horrible" defense to take advantage of! Kinda like Ovi. People whine, ah, he just scores everything on one timers from the same dot. WELL EVERONE KNOWS HIS GAME PLAN SO STOP HIM! But they can't. They still cant. 😂
@@dannycarlow8204 The NHL never ever instructed other skaters to never hit Wayne Gretzky, that'd be idiotic. However, if you hit Wayne, his entire team would probably come after you. You gotta expect a level of retaliation for hitting the greatest player.... ever.
@@skeletonbusdriver130 That's how it was for every star, not just Wayne. It wasn't called "The Enforcer Era" because of the Oilers. Go look at an 80's Red Wings' roster and tell me Yzerman didn't have top notch protection. He had a whole stable of maniacs over there.
I still find it a complete joke that Peter pocket said he traded Gretzky to the kings i wasn't aware trading a player came with the former team get $15 million for 1 players peter pocketbook was such am idiot when it came to making and spending money no wonder he died almost broke😂😂😂
What does it matter what he said? He brought Wayne to Edmonton for ten years and the Oilers are the only team of the four 1979 expansion teams still in their original city. He did something right for that city.
Have you ever heard Wayne say that he's better than anyone? Wayne also said that Fuhr is the greatest goalie ever. Do you believe him on that as well or do you just pick and choose what to believe from the greatest player ever? If Mario was better, you would think he would have more single season records, wouldn't you? Maybe a few more Harts? Mario relied on cheap points to score big. Wayne didn't.
Miller/biron Briere, drury, Roy, Connolly, gaustead down the middle Hecht, pominville, vanek, mair, affiniganov, jp dumont, Daniel paille, Stafford, Alex kotalik, Tommy pyatt… on the wings lol we were stacked
I never quite understood the whole “Gretzky isn’t great at breakaways” riff. He scored A TON of beauty goals on breakaways, and he had a couple of different go-to moves. Would’ve loved to have seen what he would have tried against Hasek in the ‘98 Olympics, but sadly we’ll never know
There are many men who have earned wearing the C, but only one is known as "The Captain." Yzerman was the toughest, hardest playing guy on the ice I ever got to watch. He gave everything he had, every night. He was the embodiment of what it means to be a hockey player. From all of us who had the privilege to watch you play, thank you, Mr Yzerman, for everything.
Another one of those highlight reels that i stop watching after a few seconds because someone dubbed music in this the background,. Love Metallica, but music and hockey hilights don’t mix. Gonna seek out a vid that captures the memories the way they were originally captured.
Todays nhl the goalie and defense is nothing like he has seen before. I sound like a hater but it’s true. Who knows if he could even play in todays nhl
If he played today, that means he would have grown up in today's game just like McDavid or Matthews while training the same. It would be normal for him. Why do people say this stuff that makes no sense?
