Many today do not recognize the word, but “philology” was for centuries nearly synonymous with humanistic intellectual life, encompassing not only studies of language and literature but also history, culture, religion, art, archaeology and more. Philology was the queen of all human sciences. How did it become little more than an archaic word? Welcome to my passion project where we will embark on intellectual voyages through the annals of language, exploring the origins, metamorphoses, and legacies of the world's literatures. From the enigmatic scripts of ancient civilizations to the lost libraries of yore, and all the way to the corpus digitalization of the modern age. Each episode will be your gateway into little-known historical anecdotes, historical figures, and discoveries that have shaped our understanding of the past. Embark on this scholarly journey with us, where languages are not merely tools of communication but a mirror of humanity's soul. Welcome to Language Chronicles.
This is just awful. All vague generalizations, some legendary material, nothing specific. And for guys who call themselves "Language Chronicles" to completely botch the pronunciation of 道 (Tao/Dao) and 道德經 (Tao Te Ching or Daodejing) just shows that they don't know what they are doing.
Thank you for your comment! Chinese is not my mother tongue so I apologize for not getting the correct pronunciation. This is indeed a general overview of the history and interesting facts of the text. I am afraid that if you were seeking a more scholarly commentary this brief introduction will not sate your curiosity. I have started fairly recently to create videos so I appreciate your feedback and will strive to make better videos in the future.
