Please don't call them "Red Rattlers". That is a MELBOURNE expression that seems to have crept into Sydney after the event. They were never called that in Sydney when they were active. I'm old enough (76) to remember.

The wonderful Randall Bane miming. He learnt from Marcel Marceau. Randall was connected with ICDF ( International Christian Dance Fellowship) for many years. I was on a road trip with him to Canberra once and learnt from him at many Christian Dance Fellowship conferences here and overseas. Fun times!
The 800K donation for the bicentenary came with conditions. The government doesn't just give out money UNLESS it approves where that money is going to be spent. The government also checks up to see that the money was indeed spent where it was to be spent. Jones wouldn't accepted those conditions for he wanted just the money to be spent where ever it suited him to spend it and the government said "no deal unless you do it our way" Jones would have said "it's always my way or the highway" and in doing so Jones kissed goodbye to nearly $1M and condemned the DSRM to a static graveyard where what members he has left buy more railway related items for their messiah, him.

You can't because legally Jones owns the whole lot. The people who have bought all this stuff have knowingly bought it all their messiah Keith Jones. Granted for many he's gone from being a messiah to Satan in their eyes but they can't do anything about because Jones has outsmarted the whole lot of them. He knows that if anyone takes him to court it will be a very long process and extremely expensive for he will drag it out to bankrupt those who take him to court whereupon they'll then give up and he'll get away with it. He may well then turn round and sue them costing them even more money. So they do nothing and just dream about what could have been.
It's amazing the things people will say when they are the centre of attention like this. So, Gary's father was a train driver with the NSWGR, he was not a guest of the NSW government at the opening ceremony. The official train made two return trips from Wynyard to North Sydney in the period from 12:30 to 1PM. De Groot's misguided stunt occurred well before this and it was not visible from the railway regardless. What Gary's father would have seen briefly on the second trip over, as his train descended in to Milson's Point, were the many school children leading the long foot procession back up along the northern approach. THIS coincidence was caught on film. in fact, of all the events on the bridge on opening day, the presence of the official train is probably the least recognised and recorded. Making wild claims in front of TV cameras doesn't help to put history in to perspective.
Actually, they were known as red rattlers! My friends and I are of the age group when the ones single story with manually opening doors used to hang out the doors and smoke. And they are known as readers as they were when.
Love that growl of the traction motors. I used to get a U set quite regularly in ‘94, and while I was a big fan of the V-sets, the U was still a nice ride when the weather was mild, and they had character. The sounds in the first half of this video brought back great memories. And nice choice of music for the 2nd half 😊
1980's Synth power at its very best. I have searched and searched.. and can find no other Adrian Snell performance that even touches this one. Its the British touch with that Australian "Go Hard or Go Home" attitude and mix. Compressed into oblivion and shoved into the mono linear track of a Hitachi suitcase VCR. If only he had released something similar professionally .. but then if he did it wouldn't be this, would it😉
Oh yeah, they used chopper thyristor controlled motors, Vs the clunky camshaft resistor bank controlled ones, they didn't jolt violently because of that
Hehe like a love child of a k set and tangarra! Was that motor car and driving trailer or just trailer? So c sets are now all off and some k sets still in service beat the c sets on longetivity in service, especially the first batch with the driving trailers. C sets had a fresh smell inside and the arrows above the doorways which i remember on north shore line. Jm
A beaut clip Greg and for posting it Paul. A big thank you goes out.....to all of the hardworking and committed members and volunteers at SETS, who help keep our NSW railway preservation, electric traction rollingstock and history going.
