When i began learning drums in the 70s, this self taught drummer was known as the world's best as he set the bar at the time with his intricate hi-hat work and speed on his solos. He inspired the likes of Ringo Starr, Roger Taylor, John Bonham and Phil Collins. He was and still is in my opinion the king of the drumkit, though Peart, Bonham and the later stratospheric innovators took it to an even higher level.

I'm 1st TPT, second from Buddy's left. Our Jazz Tpt player from the USA (Paul Philips) had to unexpectedly return to the U.S. that fall and it was easier to get replacements from the U.K. as the Bari Sax player Jay Craig (orig. from Scotland) had worked with many of the top young trumpeters there and rec. 3 different players (Simon Gardner/BERLIN’Nov84, John Thirkell/PRAGUE’Oct84, Steve Sidwell) to do 2 weeks each for the remainder of that tour. John was particularly happy to see this post (Czech 1984), as there was previously no audio or video evidence of the time he was with the band.”
He was just a big jerk. You can’t be the best drummer and a huge jerk and expect other drummers who are just as good but not a jerk to not look down on you. I know I could stand on my own in a room with buddy rich. I think it’s time we start challenging the idea of his greatness. Tv convinced a whole generation that he was the best when it’s simply not true. Tupac wasn’t the best rapper, buddy rich wasn’t the best drummer. Thomas Lang puts him to shame with technical ability and rudiments.
Buddy was incredible as a soloist, but equally great as a band leader - yes he was considered a PITA at times, but the guy always delivered an outstanding performance. 👏
