If he was not favored when he walked on the track. HE WOULD STOP! LOOK AT THE TOTE BOARD. THEN TURN AROUND AND LOOK IN THE STANDS! THEN HE WOULD SHAKE HIS HEAD BACK AND FORTH! THEN THROW HIS HEAD UP AND TURN AND GALLOP DOWN THE TRACK>. The gates would open and he was gone! And the horses he beat were monsters (Viking Spirit at 6 furlongs was a 1200 lb. BEAST!) in their day. He won 34 STAKES RACES! NO HORSE IN LAST 40 years has none that. Not even John Henry.. Today they think if you win 6 races and 17 million you are something. I would like to see todays horses run against the horses of tether year before the BAMBI HORSES CAME ALONG.
When he made his move between those horses, it was clear that he was on a mission to take the lead in the home stretch to victory. Wow ,what a burst of power he had to pull away like that. Great race from the Lava Man!!!
So big is better is at the barn I ride at. And my friend rides him. And I got to lead him and hug him he is a sweet horse and did you now he is a stallion.
THESE 2 ARE PROBABLY THE GREATEST 870 HORSES IN HISTORY. GONE LOST ONLY 1 TIME AT 870,AND SNOW ONLY TWICE AT 870! THEY SPLIT THEIR 2 MEETINGS AGAINST ONE ANOTHER!!! WICKED HORSES!!
When I want to envision what it must've been like to watch Man O'War in his many record-setting races, I picture this race (at least the 1st part of it).
How interesting this is for me. Ed Burdick is my ex husband and I know he loved doing this win or lose. What a wonderful mule. I am sending this film to Ed's sons they will have so much enjoyment from this as they have not seen him since they were very young. Thank you for posting this.
What's the distance of this race? The final 1-1/2 or 2 furlongs of this race. Nokomy really seemed to be flying. The pace in the early part of the race seemed almost a crawl. But they all, Nokomy especially, really picked up the tempo 2 furlongs from home.
