Thanks for your comment. Depends on how big the pieces are. I’ve done ping-pong size ball in about three minutes. Small as a size the quicker the mix. I rely on a nice even tone from the two colors.
What a Geeza!, a one time only gift for you kids!, knowledgeable folk of this calibre were a real rarity back in my days!, look after this one!, there's no replacement.
Have just found this channel, and what a video to land on, saved to my 'useful folder'!. Having worked with clay, for too longa time, I can say that most of the items in this video, would be applicable to clay use, so don't rush past this if you're not a woodworker!. The first item, perfect tool for small scale sculpts, making moulds requires a flat and even base to work on, this item has that at least. Moving on to 4:30, another clay useful thing!, especially the metal cutters ...quick and clean solution to cutting exact circles, and many other shapes from clay!. Thank you for expanding on the usual one item per video nonsense!, I hope these videos of yours expands your subscriber numbers, thank you for sharing something so useful!.
Neat! I love it how you made sketches and then prototyped with cardboard. I can tell you like to think things through rather than jump straight in. Your finished tote is excellent and it's 100% yours! Very well done. 👍👍 I don't have many tools yet, but if (or when) I do i shall have to figure out what kind of tote that would suit me. 😉 All the best from Scotland.
Thank you for your kind words. The Dremel is model 8220. That comes with a 12 V lithium battery. I found it very useful and versatile. I use a keyless chuck which makes changing bits very quick and easy.
Such an informative video, answered so many questions that I hadn't found the answers to anywhere else, and I appreciate you sharing the results of your meticulous experimentation. At 15:55 when you're taking about the acrylic sealer you use before painting, what is the brand you prefer?
There are no California warnings on the container. It does say caution wash hands after each mixing with soap and warm water. I would wear gloves when mixing the two parts together.
Hi Mark, just found this video. Looking forward to making my own handle. Youmention doing a video on thinning the blade to a flat grind..... I can't seem to find it. Is there some other video you recommend to see this process?
Sorry for the delayed response. Hi am on the fence about flat grind blades. I have one flat grind blade and the cutting edge keeps rolling and breaking on me. The scanty edge with the micro bevel. It seems works so much better. I will keep experimenting And I will do another video as soon as I figure out what’s going on.
Mark could you tell me where you got the pattern for a black cap chickadee, I say it in one of your videos. Would appreciate it because that the next bird I want to carve . Just finished a green wing teal drake and a mallard drake , would like to try carving a small bird . Thanks for your time .
I use the patterns from the book Songbird carving by Roslyn Leach, Daisy. These patterns are the best you can find as far as I’m concerned. A wonderful book with five different songbird patterns information on habitat, tools, and wood carving.
I use BLO with no problem. I actually like the variation it brings out in the wood grain, especially since you don't get a whole lot of contrast in the grain naturally with basswood.
Thank you for your comment. Do you paint acrylic on top of it? I love boiled Lindsey Doyle. As long as I don’t put acrylic on top of it it’s beautiful.
Got some patterns that are made to sit your figure in a chair, boat, swing, etc,? I have seen hundreds of them standing but not sitting, or even laying on their side (in a hammock, bed, cot, etc.)
Great video, really comprehensive. I used BLO under acrylic for a while, with mixed results. But didn’t like the coloration at the end grain so I stopped doing it. Been using the natura oil for a couple years now and I actually like it a lot. I don’t seem to have any issue with the acrylic paint over it. For any special carvings I will use a water based pre-stain and then very thinned acrylics, often multiple layers and I think that looks great. It’s just a lot of smell and work so don’t do that very often. Thanks for the video and info!
I use BLO before I paint, and the basswood just sucks up the BLO immediately. I'll paint within an hour after applying BLO, sometimes much sooner using acrylic paint (Folkart, Ceramcoat, or Decoart). Some of the carvings are a number of years old and so far, I have not seen any yellowing at all or degradation of the painted surfaces. Some of the faces on caricatures I carve don't even get painted as the coloring with the BLO gives the face a natural color. I do brush water on the face before I use the watered down red on a Santa face (cheeks and nose area). I have just started using Minwax 209 (I wait a day for the 209 to fully dry) on a couple of carvings before I paint and see the same quality of the carving finish using either BLO or 209. Older carvings I used the acrylic paint right out of the bottle without thinning with water. Now I thin all my acrylic paints before I apply them over the BLO or 209 surface. Time will tell.
Thank you for this. I have been using BLO on some carvings and some water based varnish on others. This was very eye opening. I especially like the multiple coats of paint to make the product pop.
Hi, great detailing on all videos I have watched! Do you sell any related items on this or any site? Really good songbird patterns are to find. Also, rough outs or just blanks. If you can find a pattern then there is typically no drawn in feather layout especially a top view If not create a book I will be your first customer! Thanks!
I have been carving about 6 months and mostly watching YT videos to gain a little expertise! Mark may be the most helpful carver I have watched especially feathers and watched his wood burning ones as well!
The aluminum handle knives are from Herb Dunkle and are about 25 to 30 years old and the maple detail knife mentioned after the warren tools, Dunkle knives are now based in NW Ohio,
I have made a knife like yours! still working on handle shape. BUT, are you still going to show how to change the bevel to a flat grind? Been looking everywhere!
BTW, Harbor Freight does not seem to have the packs of the 5/32" drill bits anymore. Ordered a piece of brass rod that promises to be 5/32 not 4mm like most of them on Amazon.
