One of the worst things about wrongful conviction is that nobody can make a 100% recovery from it. Some people can recover reasonably well, others not at all, but there is no full recovery. The damage caused by wrongful conviction stays with you until death. One reason for this is that even after you are cleared, there are people who still believe you’re guilty. Another is that the anniversary of your false arrest is indelibly seared on you. I know of a wrongly convicted man who died on the (22nd) anniversary of his false arrest, and I don’t think it was coincidence.

For those who want a visual of 'tonic immobility', I would suggest watching Thirteen Reasons Why Season 1, episode 12, when Bryce and Hannah are in the hot tub. I think this scene actually did a really great job of portraying the internal chaos and powerlessness that some victims experience. Of course, please keep in mind that this is not every victim's experience, and others may feel this does not fully or accurately portray their experience. For those who have not experienced this trauma, it also may not have such a deep impact to witness this scene. For me, personally, I did feel it was quite accurate for what SOME survivors experience.

U.S court system jammed because of this small group of lifelong, violent repeat offenders. U.S constitution requires speedy trials, which isn't happening because of this factor We...can process more efficiently. My respect to all law enforcement: orphaned, stolen age 2, my heroes were law enforcement I, magically, childlike, thought all police knew where stolen children were, to rescue. This is why my heart loves law enforcement. Heaven wanted me to feel how it feels to lack your real name, lack basic safety, so I would deeply care for others.

I'm so happy I found this after watching and reading about so many cases where victims weren't believed and even instead were arrested for making a "false" report. Hopefully that practice will become very rare soon. I just could not understand it at all from a police perspective, why often the actual suspects were not even investigated or not in the same thoroughness as the victims. It could not just be bias or rape myth right? And certainly not malice, to sent innocent people knowingly to prison. Now I get that they are just unaware about victim behaviour and victim questioning. I really hope that this will result in victims being believed and helped more and hope it will change those numbers of dismissals and retractions drastically.

I hear it's estimated to be around 2-5% being false. So not zero, but not the 50-80% of cases that police officers are estimated to think the complainant is lying.

You know you're a huge nerd when you watch this entire video, and you're not even in law enforcement! I'm a Social Worker, and have a strong interest in criminal justice reform issues. Would've enjoyed seeing the replays of each "parallell" talk from the conference - a few looked very interesting (from what I read on the agenda), but no recordings appear to be available! I looked up ICAT to see what it was, and landed on a 2-page explanation from Maris Herold herself, I imagine, published by the Boulder P.D. It was really helpful, and reassured me that at least 1 police department is actively working toward becoming officers who actually "protect & serve," rather than those who overreact & kill. The stats clearly demonstrate how effective this ICAT training has been in Boulder with a measurable decrease in takedowns, incidents of brandishing a gun to gain compliance, and complaints filed for excessive use of force! No criticism of this training or methodology would be warranted, in my opinion. The stats In fact, I consider each step of the decision-making process to be common-sense. Respect for the sanctity of all human life (*and animal life, ahem!) seems like a no-brainer...yet, body-worn camera footage clearly shows a great number of officers disregarding the lives of "suspects" in various ways. Police doing *everything possible* to avoid physically harming a suspect shouldn't seem like a "new" policy for any police officer. I don't believe that new officers start out feeling arrogant and on a power trip...I think they start by carrying out their duties respectfully & honorably, but Later adapt to the "company culture" of reckless & dogmatic authoritarianism that seems to be pervasive among police departments nationwide. A disregard for the sanctity of human life isn't an attitude reserved solely for officer-involved homicides. Rather, we observe such an attitude during every "takedown," "dogpile," unreasonable stop, unreasonable search, chokehold & materially false prosecution of an innocent person! The newbies learn from their senior officers that cops are above the law and can do or behave as they like.

My exploration into ICAT led me to this video. I’m interested how this will develop. So far police reform has been disastrous. Departments are running low on Cops and Chiefs are still getting fired. The spectrum of social responsibility between Cops and civilians is completely one sided, and using Cops as political punching bags just makes things worse.

Integrity is what you do when no one is watching; it's doing the right thing all the time, even when it may work to your disadvantage. Integrity is keeping your word. It's an internal compass, a rudder that directs you where you know you should go when everything around you is pulling you in a different direction. If an officer can't do the right thing when everyone is watching how can you expect everyone to believe they'll do the right thing when no one's watching, get rid of qualified immunity.

Where are the good psychologists in psychiatry? why don't the police still find out about victims behaviours afetr many years of available knowledge and newspaper reports? I have been mistreated, neglected, withheld proper healthcare for 42 years, the object of many offenses and hindered in filing police reports on them for about 20 years I believe. am só ill and stress-exhausted and re-traumatized over and over again, recently this summer in the local police station. The german word Kränkung tells us about bad treatment causing illness, making ill, (=Krankmachung), which is what I feel from the Police, Psychiatry, Healthcare and different Social Security places.Since "Rape" denotes sexually, it is wrong to call it a repeated such, but in the state of severe illness with shattered body-and soul functions, it feels like a psychical and energetic kind of violation, since I am so weakened with even thinner skin than I had from start, from childhood trauma.I want help now, heal and live. It's a little late, having had 42 years of my life wasted and opportunities passed.A neverending hell without reason and explanation, I being an active, educated, intelligent co-opaerating, helpful human.

Strange Fruit Still From days of enslavement to mass incarceration, Don’t tell me the fallacy about a glorious Emancipation, In this day and age, no one could make me believe. We’d still witness the strangest fruit hanging with blood-stained leaves. From the Learning Trees to the back of the bus Has someone again declared “Open Season” on all of us? What about that legal protection known as due process It’s an elusive dream for the strange fruit that I must confess. Can Congress pass a law that will legalize our Black skin? If not, the lynching will continue because of this genetic sin. Be it North, South, East, or West; you count the figures, Black bodies are constantly murdered by all sorts of triggers. Disregard the fabricated, contradicting, or trite pretext, The only concern is will I or a loved one be next. The smell of blood lingers heavily in our nation’s air. And those same lynching trees prohibit you to stare, From hooded individuals who terrorized the peaceful night To the other types who left Blacks no choice but to take flight, Yes, we are a strange fruit hanging for all to curse or hate, In this day and time, this remains our unfortunate fate. A simple traffic stop could result in our dying, Listen closely to the wind; you’ll hear another Black mother crying. It is scenarios like these for people worldwide to see, Reminding everyone of the strange fruits hanging from that Southern tree. I have agreed with you. The governments' rule and regulation, especially to enforce the procedural justice is crucial for integrity and ethics and fidelity and dignity of gpvernments' rule of law. Criminal Justice system has built in Constitutional principles and the body of rules and regulations that defines and specifies punishments for offenses of a public nature, or for wrongs committed against the state and society to maintain the integrity of the government's rule of law. Criminal law is built in constitutional principles and which operates within an established set of procedures applicable to the criminal justice system, is composed of both statutory and case law. Equal protection under law is the foundation of American criminal justice. It has posted in front of the Supreme Court of Justice entrance. The rule of law is indispensable to a thriving and vibrant society. It shields citizens from government overreach. The rule of law is indispensable to a thriving and vibrant society. You respect it because it is dictated by the facts and the law. The lawyers and judges are the guardians of the rule of law, a concept that developed over many centuries and today is fundamental to human liberty. Our Constitution was designed to protect the rule of law. The Constitution is not just about words written on paper. It requires people to implement it. In a democratic republic, liberty is protected by cultural norms as well as by constitutional text. The goal in governed by law - by a system of clear rules and neutral processes - not by the whim of any person. In a democratic republic, liberty is protected by cultural norms as well as by constitutional text. "Sincerity of belief is not the test of truth." Truth is about solid evidence, not strong opinions. Every lawyers should accept a personal duty to keep the republic by teaching its principles. It remains essential for citizens to understand the legal principles that undergird the Constitution. Our system of government is not self-executing. It relies on wisdom and self-restrain. In a democratic republic, liberty is protected by cultural norms as well as by constitutional text. The Department of Justice must never be a partisan actor. In all cases, agents and prosecutors are obligated to make neutral decisions, preserve personal privacy, protect national security, and insulate investigations from political interferences. In the Department of Justice, we need to hold people accountable when they violate the rules. Most importantly, our actions need to pass muster in courts of law. Agents and prosecutors develop the discipline required by the burden of prove our allegation of wrong doing beyond any reasonable doubt.
