My great Grandfather was in company F..along with 4 of his Brothers...he was Richard Daniels..one was Sgt Clement..they're all mentioned in the history of the 33rd...they were the "Dixie Invincibles"...and their epitaph reads....They all fought like Heroes...
The more I look at your painting and the use of 28mm miniatures I may well settle on 28mm and build regiments from a specific brigade. Particularly Sharps Practice rules. (And my eye sight isn’t quite as good as it used to be☹️). I have a 6’’x 4’ tablespoons, which most sensible rule writers later for when adding a scenario to their rules . I just have the feeling that most gamers usually want to play the headline battles such as Gettysburg or Waterloo. Instead of 6’x 4’ A 6’x 9’ is more practical because the space used by the figures. ie the bases you show for infantry is over 40mm wide compared to a 15mm two figure base is 30mm plus about 4mm for the tray, at a guess. That is if you use 28mm figures for bigger games?
When it comes to 28mm larger force games I think it’s hard to do on a 6x4. I’ve played a few sharp practice games and that’s worked fine on a 6x4 but anything like black powder or picketts charge I feel you need a larger table. From what I’ve seen of Black Powder being played on a 6x4 there seems like there is no room for manoeuvre and it’s more about bumping up the board and rolling dice. I do have limited experience of playing larger games so it is really hard for me to say but personal opinion I would probably choose a 8x6 board when playing with my 28mm black powder armies
For the bed rolls, they were actually a tarred poncho that had the wool blanket rolled into it. I would used a 2 part German grey and one part black mix for the bed roll
Thankyou, my more recent paint scheme have black/grey blanket rolls to represent the “tarred” look. I used to change the colours up to make the unit look a little more unique/ interesting on the tabletop 👍
I've noticed a huge lack of 3D printable files for ACW wargaming online so I'm trying to model some to put in places like Thingiverse and Cults3D. Are these size models in "heroic scale"? Anything from a painting aspect that would be helpful to work into a model? (IE straps need to be wider, bayonets need to be thicker, stuff like that)?
From what I’ve noticed that some have Perry miniature scale while others use heroic. I think if you use any 28mm size, you will get variants in height weight and body shape which in my opinion for display reasons would be neat. As for the accouterments that will definitely be noticeable as well as the differences in the weapons sizes
If you make any acw miniature designs, please design a general john Buford and a general john reynolds. I am doing a battle of Gettysburg display at the museum where I work and am in need of those 2 individuals
So Perry miniatures tend to be “true scale” but I’ve noticed the rifles tend to be abit chunky which i think is a good thing. Some 3d sculpts I’ve bought that are also true scale do have thinner rifles which seems to be harder to paint/ show details. Hope that helps?
@@KingMATTtheSuperior it does help very much. as i stated the differences in height and build would be good. These would not be used for gaming they would be diplayed in a case and viewed from a distance not up close.
@@KingMATTtheSuperior Super helpful. I put my first batch of Union soldiers on thingiverse, I'm gonna print some out see what needs tweaking when I paint them and hopefully find a good balance!
Epic ACW range is useful and it’s something I would of looked at if I hadn’t already built my current collection. The only thing is I wouldn’t use them for black powder and I would try cut the strips up into groups of 5 men rather than the full 10, I could then base them on Squares rather than rectangles.
Maybe that clearly depends on the purpose: If you are looking simply for something to game with they are certainly great - despite any deficiency in terms of overall "correctness". But if you really like painting minis that might not be a great choice. Matt just talked about the limitations of building hundreds of identical Perry plastic minis and that`s really true to some degree. Having built and painted the 5 poses from the confederate box alone some 250 times that starts becoming somehow boring ;-) On the other hand you will face the very same situation quite soon when painting dozens and dozens of Epic stripes. And if you want to give your unit more realistic ACW appearance you really need to start cutting the stripes (e.g. for closers or a nice color guard). Furthermore I think there`s only Kallistra as a nice option for variety, while with 28mm you have lot more suppliers that can add to your units.
@@Castillo525 You are welcome! BTW: of course, in both worlds, there are also printing options. I simply didn`t refer to them due to a lack of experience. But that might hopefully change soon with an ACW bundle from Studio Historia
Yeah sorry it was a really last min stream. Was more to see if I could get it working :) next time I’ll have a desk cam so you can see my rubbish paint job haha
@@KingMATTtheSuperior In fact they released some metal officer packs. 2 versions of mounted staff (4 each) and 4 packs of 2 officers (one mounted) each. When they were announced first I was happy to see these F&G guys in metal again, but when the price tag was on, well, decide for yourself. Luckily a retailer here in Germany had them just on sale for 7€ each. These are quite nice and crisp minis and now, base coat already applied, for my eye they look fully okay next to e.g. Perry miniatures.
@@Forcade23 i must of missed those miniatures being released but I’ve just taken a gander on the WG website and must say the do look like nice sculpts. I plan on picking up a few once ive saved up some pocket money haha 👍
@@KingMATTtheSuperior Indeed, thinking about the already reduced but somehow standard costs for those new packs in Germany, I could have bought one of the mounted command packs + the big Perry box for the same amount I just paid for 6 the warlord blisters...that is simply ridiculous, isn`t it? I am driven towards printing by force... ;-)
Regimental officers like the colonel and lt colonel tended to be mounted but it depends on the situation. The captains and lieutenants would be on the ground with the men, so would the non coms.
@@KingMATTtheSuperior Cheers, with up to 100 figures in a Regiment I wanted to see what a deployed Regiment looked like with officers and nco’s on the table even with a 60 figure regiment representing around 300 men the number of companies would have been reduced to keep the command structure.
I can only go off my experience with the hardy drill book which shows where each of the officers should be placed in line of battle or march Column. I can try to use my miniatures to act out the recommend drill at some point and upload a video to RU-vid
Regarding the decals, they are crossed cannons as the crossed rifle insignia didn't appear until after the civil war. Grear Channel by the way. Regards
@briansmaller7443 I’ve heard they did have a nice range so I’m hoping Warlord Games expand on what they’ve released so far assuming they have access to the rest of the sculpts.
@@KingMATTtheSuperior They had a whole range in greatcoats that was very cool. I want to do the Irish Brigade at Fredricksberg and they are perfect for that.
@briansmaller7443 great coat infantry look great. I’ve been eyeing up some from raven banner games but if WG end up releasing some I’ll be grabbing a box of them aswell
Thanks Phil! Yeah they seem great at first glance. Will hopefully be painting them up this week. Today is my third attempt at getting outside to prime them haha
Hello all thanks for watching the video! Something I didn’t mention about the Perry miniatures plastic artillery box set is that it comes with limbers for the guns where as this warlord games box set does not.
Yes, and there are 6 multi pose crew members on the Perry sprue. So looking at the price this is an easy win for PM. Nevertheless nice sculpts and an absolutely welcome addition. Still waiting for my boxes here in Germany, so thanks again for another unboxing
@@KingMATTtheSuperior Last week a box of advancing infantry and a box of artillery arrived: quite a number of pieces damaged, heavily bend or even missing. No ramrod was intact...and so on. Luckily Warlord replaced the items bought by a retailer without hesitation, what certainly proves they are absolutely aware of such issues. The assembly of the advancing minis is no fun at all, but as I discovered works right and even looks better with spare arms from a Perry box ;-) Once the minis have their base coat they start looking nice.
Yes I believe they do know there is an issue as I had my replacement sorted very quickly. The advancing poses were a pain to put together I agree. Mixing with Perrys is a great idea and will allow for my poses! Nice idea
@@KingMATTtheSuperior Even better: one drop of superglue and the hard plastic is in place! Perhaps Warlord should not simply state "14+" on the box but instead "14+ years of model bulding experience required"?! Slicing metal minis in the virtual world is one thing, getting them together again in gum-like resin is a totally different story...
