Thank you very much for sharing this video with us. I hope that this precious knowledge will help me with my video game addiction and push me into a better state of well-being.
Good suggestion, Jane. Some people, especially when they first stop drinking, can feel desperately self-conscious about what they've been seeing as their problem. They don't want other people to know they've had this problem. They can feel that the fact they're not drinking somehow draws attention to this "problem" and they're not yet comfortable or confident enough for people to know about it. So, it can help to pre-rehearse some reasons/excuses to help them grow in confidence in navigating social situations sober. What often happens is that, once they have been sober long enough, their confidence grows and they become happier to share more openly about what they've been through and to go into more detail about their drinking behaviour. It's not necessarily lying, it's choosing a way that's most comfortable and helpful for you and it's different for every single one of us. I used to say that I was experimenting with not drinking as I wanted a healthier lifestyle. It wasn't a lie but it didn't go into detail either and helped me "save face" as I saw it. I like that you've shared what you say as this could be really helpful for other people who might have been struggling with this. The more options people have on the table, the easier it becomes to choose an option that works!
I agree, having an attractive image to look forward to makes it easier to not look back. Congratulations on your sobriety. I also believe in order to help beat an addiction long term, you must end up getting addicted to something else, ideally healthy addictions, like getting in shape and self-improvement and seeing those results. looking forward to these things end up taking more space out of your mind that was once filled with intrusive thoughts trying to make you go back until this new lifestyle becomes normal.
Thank you! This video really spoke to me...fab quote from Matthias Alexander...plus you triggered so many alarm bells in my head with what you said..I have a stressful job and I keep relapsing into the bottle of wine of an evening...you are an inspiration ..and you now look younger than you did on your earlier videos...sobriety suits you!...God Bless
Ahahaha... thank you so much Luisa! Glad the video spoke to you and you found it helpful. I like how you emphasized how being sober lets you be in the moment fully enjoying the scene around you instead of thinking "When can I sneak away to drink? When would it be acceptable to drink? "
Yep, that is exactly it - being sober allows you to be fully present instead of your mind drifting on to how, when, why to have your next drink... Being sober truly transforms things so you look forward to the experience itself rather than looking forward to it as an excuse for drinking.
I'm definitely overthinking this. It's just dinner with my in-laws. The only person who will give me grief is my sister in law's boyfriend but I can handle him. Nice video by the way. Keep up the good work!
Thank you very much for these videos. I really appreciate your look at the real life aspects(personal life) of dealing with sober life. I appreciate you and your service to other Alcoholics!
Seedlip is a great non-alcoholic spirit that you can mix like a gin. Most supermarkets stock "Nosecco" too, if you want something sparkling. Enjoy your sober festivities!
I really really enjoy the way you speak. Like talking to an old friend, thanks from Australia! Also thanks for the words on what failure really is, it inspires us when we realise sobriety isn't always linear
Great video and sobriety is everything when we need it in our lives! All the support for you and subbed to your channel because I find inspiration in others for mine! Keep doing You and all the support!
