I believe this is the original original rendition from the first London run, as I remember it, having seen it. Moody later toned down his performance. If you listen carefully, you can hear the difference in the "Original Cast" recordings here on YT, and in the movie version. Perhaps Moody did it to make the lyrics more comprehensible to a general audience, perhaps to avoid offence by toning down the Jewishness of his accent and portrayal (but Moody himself was a genuine East End Jew, as was Bart!) This piece is special to me, as I have performed it in a revue. It ends, "... what happens when I'm seventy? Must come a time ... seventy." And now? I'm seventy-eight. Oh, the irony, the irony. God is an iron, as Spider Robinson quips.
The Beatles picked it from the film " Cha Cha Cha Boom " with Perez Prado & orchestra, the year is 1956. From the beginning of their song "Besame Mucho" on the 1962 DECCA tape.
If you love this version by the unforgettable Frankie Laine. You've yet to listen to the original version by Frankie on the film itself. Goosebumps is not the word. Also the commercial 78 rpm single release was much better than the one played here from the album "Hell bent for leather" Stan.
