Our family lives on a small block of land in Australia, sharing a boundary with the Aussie bush. Kangaroos & native Aussie birds are daily visitors.

Hey Daz, sorry to hear the fruit flies are a major issue. The cost is a major factor for sure. Glad you are able to rehome some of the trees to folks. Hard but smart decisions
G'day Lisa. Thanks! I don't mind the cost if it's productive, but the other factors like time and effort added to it was just too much to be worth it. I think I have been cursed on the black berry front , I took some wild thorney black berry cuttings and got those going and have them in pots for about 5 years now , I have pruned them a few year ago but not got a single berry from them , any ideas as to why ? G'day! Sorry for the slow reply. Blackberries usually fruit on the cane in the second year of growth, so if you pruned them a few years ago, they really should have fruited. The wild thorny ones are usually prolific growers. Do you think they are stressed in the pots at all? Lack of water or too big for the pots now? Other than that, I'm not really sure why. @@MyAussieGardenKitchen …thank you for your reply , I will follow up on your suggestions, very possible one of those factors could be the culprit , definitely has been in the pot along time , watering was ok but maybe the soil is deficient or lacking vigure, i will de pot it and have a good look at it , somehow I over looked those things , I am not much of a gardener and typically I do everything the hard way for some reason .
Hi Daz, I've had the same problem here in Newcastle. I use net bags with some success but lately noticed that the fruitfly are infecting the fruit through the nets. I stopped this happening to my cherished Mexican cream Guavas by using two net bags of different sizes per fruit. This year I plan to use a foam net sleeve and a fruit bag over that for each fruit

I had the most bountious year ever with my beautiful Texas peaches. Till I opened that huge red fruit and found the exact thing. Sickening wriggly larvae. I was sooo looking to can 'em up. Nope. I hope this doesn't portend a trend!

The QFF is such a pest. So sorry you had to pull up some of your fruit. I didn’t realise they injected through the bags! We have them here now too but I have escaped them so far even though the next door neighbour had some in their citrus. Holding my breath this year.

It's terrible that you're in that situation, but you're doing the right thing by stopping it from festering in your yard. The frustrating part about fruit fly is that if EVERY person in Australia spend just ONE full season (early Spring to late Autumn) being extremely vigilant about making sure that all fruit stung by fruit fly could not got develop maggots into adult flies by properly destroying them in their maggot stage and never let fruit touch the ground, they'd never be able to pupate and reach adulthood and the entire species would be wiped out except for in the wild fruit rich areas of rainforests where they're naturally from in the first place. But it only takes one person in an area to allow their fallen fruit to rot on the ground, or not destroy the fruit fly maggots properly when they're found in fruit, and not be willing to remove their fruit trees when it's too much for them to cope with, and the cycle continues and then we ALL end up with situations like yours. My town used to be in a fruit fly exclusion zone but it was removed because, too many people were too stubborn to cut down their back yard fruit tree they simply couldn't manage anymore, and too many tourists did the wrong thing, the fruit fly got here and out of control very fast. It destroyed all the fruit production in the area, we used to have a lot of commercial fruit growers around here, but they're all gone now, and the fruit fly remains due to a combination of tourists continuing to bring it in, and back yard fruit tree neglect.
G'day! Very well said and I could not agree more. Hopefully this and some previous videos have made some people more aware of the issue, but it's such a big one to tackle, isn't it. @@MyAussieGardenKitchen Whilst we're on the topic of fruit fly, have you had problems with fruit fly going after smaller fruits such as raspberries on your property, and if so, how do you manage that?
So sorry to hear about your awful fruitfly problem Daz, yeah always something affecting our garden, in your case fruitflies, in mine, dadburn leafcutter ants won't let my Grapefruit tree recuperate itself, they denuded the tree, just left a small clump of older leaves(it's as if the miserable ants know, without leaves how can trees produce their own food, combining beautiful sunshine with vital water and adding the nutrients they get from the soil. As for the variety of apples you have, you're on it bro! Here in Mexico there used to be only 4 varieties: Red Delicious, Yellow Delicious, Granny Smith and Royal Gala, recently I've tried the Pink Lady and the Honey Crisp, such tasty apples indeed! I've yet to try the Fuji apples and I'm pretty sure there are other varieties that I don't even know of.👍😋🍎🍏
G'day Joe. You made me hungry talking about all the apple varieties. The Pink Lady apply was created by a guy in Western Australia a he passed way a couple of years ago. That's crazy about the leaf cutter ants mate. Sucks to hear that. We have family in Mildura and they are considering abandoning their whole backyard orchard. And it's so much worse for the poor growers.

G'day! I am so sorry for this slow reply. I am just seeing this comment now. The old brown branches will just dry out and sit there and it's good to cut them just above soil level. I see your grow bags are 15 gal? about 50 liter. but you started in a 1 gal 4 liter? then transplanted to the 50l or should i start my cane right at the 50l bag? also last year in grow bags I lost raspberry, blackberry and grape to root freezing. all my bags are on pallets so the bottoms of the bags are exposed to open air on the bottom. should a place a pot catch pan under the bags?
G'day! I think you will be fine with starting in a 50L if you have one ready. Just keep it moist and mulch around it if you can. Mine were in the smaller pots as I'm pretty sure I got 2 of them heavily discounted as they had been at the store too long and I nursed them back to health in the original pots. I'm really sorry you lost the plants to the freezing. It's something I have never dealt with fortunately. If you can't put them in the ground and cover with thick mulch to try to protect the roots, is it maybe possible to surround the grow bags with chicken wire and tightly fill under and around the grow bags with something like hay, straw, sugar cane mulch, to try to keep the direct cold off them? I hope that makes sense? Not sure how cold it gets, but if you lost the last lot of plants to the cold, protecting them would be a must. I hope this helps and please feel free to contact me again. Hi Daz, I purchased two dwarf plums of the exact varieties. Do you have an update on these plums? and why did you not end up growing them back to back in one pot as mentioned in the video with the granny smith apple a year or two back? Cheers
G'day! Both plums are healthy and still in their own grow bags. I still have them sitting in the same spot opposite each other for cross pollination. I noticed last season that the A-OK plum flowered weeks before the Satsuma and I was worried about pollination. The A-OK, gave me a handful plums and the Satsuma gave me 8 I think it was. I was keen to experiment and grow them together as one, but the flowering times and lack of fruit made me hold off. This season, they have flowered about 2 weeks apart, with the Satsuma having substantially less blossoms at the moment. The A-ok is absolutely covered and always has bees present, which is a good thing. Very keen to see if last year was a once off and if this season will be better. I hope all that makes sense. @@brandoncarter1281 G'day again mate. No problem and get in touch any time. I've read many times that 100ft (30 meters) is the limit for cross pollination. I keep anything that needs cross pollinating near each other, but that is me being overly cautious. I can, so why not. Being the first year, I'd pick off the flowers and fruit, so the tree can focus on getting strong enough for the time that it actually needs to produce a lot of fruit. Painful, but I've always done it. Just a quick update on mine, the Satsuma plum has a lot more flowers and the A-OK, is still holding strong with an abundance of healthy flowers. Hopefully they will have some good cross pollination happening. I'm seriously thinking of going out with a paint brush and hand pollinating like I do with pumpkins. G'day Mate! Texan here! Back when i was a kid i used to pick wild blackberries at my grandfathers house. He lived in the mountains of Virginia! I planted some this spring, thornless, we got a few berries before the heat kicked in. 100*F here for that last week. I want to do the "tip layer" but i would have to baby sit them because they are in direct sunlight most of the day. But i have a spot by my front porch where i have two successful Mulberry cuttings that are doing great! So i think i can get those Blackberries to do the same in that area. It only gets overhead light, no direct! We bought a few acres in 2020 and I've been trying to get some food items growing. Thanks for the tips!
G'day! My father grew up on a farm and blackberries were and absolute pest for them back in the day. It was so funny when he visited and saw all of mine and wondered what in Earth I was doing. 😁 Once I explained that these thornless are not invasive he calmed down. Regarding the sun, can you make a little shelter to shade them? I have found that mine need shade and water in the heat of Summer. Good luck and I hope you can enjoy lots of berries. G'day! I am doing well thanks. Ah, yes, I was going to explain that and forgot. It's because some of the carrots moved upwards and were exposed to the sun. Imagine how a potato goes green if left out in the sunlight too long... Same thing. They taste the same to me and I assume shops don't sell those ones as they don't look right.
