Getting to ball hut from the tasman car park now requires a bit of technical ability due to the 2019 Husky slip. The route around the slip is exposed and can be challenging if you are not prepared. Getting up to Caroline hut (privately owned, above ball hut on the ridge) requires some off-trail experience, comfort with exposure, and basic route-finding skills. Continuing past caroline hut requires significant off-trail experience, particularly on unstable scree over death exposure (limited but present) as well as strong route-finding skills. This is certainly a mountaineering route and should not be thought of as a tramp. We saw very few other people on this route and those we did see all had climbing helmets. I mention this to give a rough sense of the skillsets and experience base commonly held by the people who safely complete this route.

I grew up down the street from there and used to go there all the time as a kid. Now its blocked off and hidden they dont want you there. Its very dangerous people have died there, bodies have been dumped there. I used to be a rock quarry and a crane hit an underground stream and flooded it completely leaving the crane and other vehicles at the bottom. This place is over 200 ft deep on all sides and its pitch black under the water. People were using this as a dumping ground for years amd there is like a half inch of oil slick resting on the top now. There are also giant snapping turtles and fish. It's a cool place to check out if you can find it....if your not from the area and dont know its exact location dont even try to find it you necer will and the neighbors call the cops if they see anyone there and you will get a trespassing ticket. This is one of those town secrets that is being hidden on purpose.
I loved this place! 2000-2005 was the time I was jumping off of “Bonez “ that was the spray paint at the top of the cliff! ❤ awesome times there . Them fish were cat fish and crappy and would eat you spit when you spit in there! I did get ear infections from swimming here but we still went and the Horse flys were insane! They would attack you on the cliff and force you to jump off and still wait for you when you popped your head up making you go back under water lmao! The memories are forever in my heart! ❤
