Welcome to our channel, HOW TO WRITE SONGS. We are Keppie Coutts, and Ben Romalis, two professional songwriters, performing artists and teachers with over 40 years of collective experience in the music industry.
We have studied and taught at some of the best contemporary music colleges in the world including Berklee College of Music, Sydney Conservatorium, the Australian College of the Arts, the Australian Institute of Music, the LA School of Songwriting and JMC Academy.
Our goal is to help people write better songs! Our belief, having worked with thousands of songwriters (many going on to find careers and success in music), is that your songwriting, like all things, can get better with meaningful and deliberate practice. Our intention is to share the skills, knowledge and ideas that we've had the privilege of gathering with others who embrace the art and craft of songwriting.
This is still so analytical in nature. Creative inspiration is a hot flash that emerges from almost nothing and you just play with it and explore its potential. If you're gonna put effort somewhere, put effort into helping your subconscious flow and make something happen. Stop being so analytical. Trying to connect with someone on an emotional subconscious level but doing so with... logic? What? You have to source it from your emotional subconscious.
Great insight! That all sounds like it would make sense - if you're not just a songwriter, but a fully formed artist. What about the songwriters that don't have their songs as high end mixes ready to distribute? What if you literally just have your songs. What's the route then?
Great content. Though I see it as talking about melodic phrasing, not melody. I would love to see a video specifically about MELODY. For example, how did The Beatles write such amazing melodies? What makes the difference between ok or good melodies and the incredibly beautiful melodies of The Beatles?
You come up with such excellent content such as this. Have you, or do you intend to, expand on this particular video further? Perhaps write a full song and take us along with you while you choose the harmony etc? I know it's asking a lot but it would be fantastic to see and follow.
Great video, great vibe! The only other thing I wanted to write is: when you play those barre chords (F♯m etc.), I think you should try to not overextend your finger joints. I heard that that can cause problems in the long run... That would be a disaster! ... and now I will hit that subscribe button...
John Lennon believed that in his best songwriting moments, he was a channel for what he called “the music of the spheres, the music that surpasses understanding.” m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-B0muTHcTc38.html&pp=ygUTU2l4IHNlY3JldHMgYmVhdGxlcw%3D%3D
OMG Keppie this is awesome, it's also so close to SONG SHARKING!!! (Which I love) ---> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jRwu5RivKFQ.html
The Beatles were my first big inspiration as a kid and got me into songwriting. After watching this I feel like I understand a new level of how they impacted my foundation as an artist… I always liked how Lennon’s songwriting had an edge no matter how mellow, but as a kid I was never focused on analyzing lyrics in ab ab etc type of way. Somehow tho I still use some of these patterns almost instinctively at times.
Takip edeceğim her zaman emeğine sağlık.
One of the coolest rhyme tricks ever is in Grateful Dead Truckin. (words by Robert Hunter) Trucking- like the doodah man Once told me you got to play your hand Sometimes, the cards ain't worth a D**M If you don't lay em down. You naturally think of "Damn", because it rhymes (imperfectly) with "man" and "hand" But they sing it as "dime", or "dyyam" leaving the listener to substitute the dirty word in his own imagination
My talent is in writing little ditties daily or very simple songs for fun and I never in a million years would have thought I would have a fully produced song to put on streaming services, but TORS made that impossibility possible for me. ✨ They even look my roughly sketched song on ukulele to a whole new level and it was easy and magical. Danny was my producer and hired musical artists to work my piece and even lengthen it out a bit into a full fledge song. 🎵 It’s not just the affordable cost and ease of communication and transactions, everyone I’ve worked with and had a call with at TORS cares. ❤
Hi Keppie and Benny!Love your classes here. I had a small request. Could you make a video on writing lyrics first and then going to music?Cause' now I'm used to writing lyrics first and then going with the music. But, I found out that it isn't really helping out with my music part. I struggle to change this habit now. And also vice-versa. I can easily make melodies but then struggle to write lyrics for that. It would be very helpful if you guys could make videos on the above - starting with the music and then to lyrics and vice-versa. Thank you!
When you cerebralize it like this, it really makes it an amazing tool at our disposal. It takes a bit of time to "map it out," but, oh, so worth it! Thank you.
"make it rhyme" She's not a girl who misses much Do do do do do do, oh yeah She's well-acquainted with the touch of the velvet hand Like a lizard on a window pane The man in the crowd with the multicolored mirrors On his hobnail boots Lying with his eyes while his hands are busy Working overtime A soap impression of his wife which he ate And donated to the National Trust I need a fix 'cause I'm going down Down to the pits that I left uptown I need a fix 'cause I'm going down Mother Superior jumped the gun Mother Superior jumped the gun Mother Superior jumped the gun Mother Superior jumped the gun Mother Superior jumped the gun Mother Superior jumped the gun Happiness is a warm gun (bang, bang, shoot, shoot) Happiness is a warm gun, momma (bang, bang, shoot, shoot) When I hold you in my arms (ooh, oh, yeah) And I feel my finger on your trigger (ooh, oh, yeah) I know nobody can do me no harm (ooh, oh, yeah) Because Happiness is a warm gun, yes it is (bang, bang, shoot, shoot) Happiness is a warm, yes it is, gun (happiness, bang, bang, shoot, shoot) Well, don't you know that happiness is a warm gun momma? (Happiness is a warm gun, yeah)
Excellent and efficient chord substitution system, simplifying theory. Use of Chromatic Mediants, Secondary Dominants (Otis' V/V, where he plays A major instead of D major), and more are easily detailed for quick reference.. Cheers! 🍻 Just subscribed.
