When I was in my teens I had to wait for the internation races at Oulton Park to see Max Deubel. He and Emil Horner used to put on a great show. Great days. MD now 89 years old and still going! The days of German and Swiss sidecar crews racing against each at British circuits - Camathias, Kolle, Enders and Schiedegger they were exciting times.
Left and right hand combos, kneelers and uprights, with fairings and without, and air-cooled engines going flat out. What a great era for sidecar racing.
Great. I met Mike in Hong Kong many years ago when he came to race in a celebrity car race at the Macau GP. I also met Phil Read and had a few beers with him in Hong Kong last year.
Great stuff. Eckington village, where Charlie Freeman had one of his shops, held a celebration day for him Yesterday, (Sat 19th July). Although the rain did it's best to ruin the day, the displays, old photos and old bikes were brilliant to see. I hope they turn it into a annual event.
