Symphony Nova Scotia is truly Nova Scotia’s orchestra. With a home base in Halifax/K’jipuktuk and performances across the province, Symphony Nova Scotia reaches more than 50,000 Nova Scotians of all ages each year with some of the most innovative concerts and educational offerings in the country.
Though Symphony Nova Scotia had its origins with the Halifax Symphony (1897-1908, 1955-1968), the Halifax Sinfoniette (1947-1955), and the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra (1968-1984), the orchestra as we know it began in 1983 with only 13 full-time musicians.
Today, under the thoughtful and dynamic leadership of Holly Mathieson, Symphony Nova Scotia is the largest employer in Nova Scotia’s cultural community, employing 37 musicians and 16 administrative staff, along with over 150 contracted artistic, production, and technical personnel. Its talented team has won many awards, including four East Coast Music Awards for classical music.
Thanks for the clarification. I've only heard them called an upright bass or bass fiddle until a few months ago. I would have never figured out the term without that explanation on my own. 👍🏻
Wow thanks max, this video is wonderful and straight to the point. You really just taught me something my new good friend. With love your new good friend Alex
JP I found you on a recent Acoustic Shoppe NAMM video. Wholly impresed with your picking. Then I hear you song! Wow! But the clincher- picking like that wearing a 2 lb watch!!!!
Besides JP's stellar playing, how about his voice ? Man. he sings real good. And this song is such a beautiful tragedy. I love the way he starts with the chorus, and as he sings the verses, more and more meaning comes as he repeats the chorus and the last time is a heartbreaker.
as a lightfoot fan for soma 60 years. when you started i was hooked. the band are magic you captured the feeling straight away guitar work perfect i would pay good money to sit for 2hrs at a concert
Jp that is one to be proud of. I mostly watch you talk about guitars. This is the first time I have seen you perform. When you talk about boucher I will picture you playing this one and know that you know what you are talking about!
This was the perfect "set up" for tonight's concert. Thank you, Susan, for the background and for your personal feelings about the works being performed. Much appreciated!
Thank you Susan for your comprehensive introduction of the music that we are coming to hear. I am very excited to hear these monumental pieces of symphonic music and to hear Brett's voice singing. It inspires me to really listen and enjoy the concert tomorrow evening.
I know it's an overdue comment, But ,I was front and center section, end aisle seat directly in front of the Stage at Convocation Hall In Wolfville for the performance that was held there. That performance was the First in-person Symphony I've ever been to. It exceeded all expectations and left me absolutely astounded and Proud to have had the experience to see all of you. The entire performance and every single person who played was one I will cherish for Life. I wish to extend to Jemma that the Bass work through the entire performance was STELLAR. Could feel it proper ,down through your torso right to your feet and through the floor. I'd also like to extend a question towards Conductor Holly if it could possibly reach her. Just wanted to congratulate her on the performance and ask her if she prefers the Aesteroid Field score or the Hyperspace Hyperspace score from "The Empire Strikes Back." ? I also had a proper grin when one of your horn players was tuning up and all of a sudden I hear the "Dallas "theme song. 😄 Hopefully wish to see you again in Wolfville. Much Respect and Admiration.
