I drove the Secret model from Stevens Institute of Technology Davidson Lab circulate tow tank , Hoboken Nj , to David Taylor model Basin in 1979 during the gas crisis . We used a civilian van with private plates to be low profile Except the license number did not allow me to fill up that day! So when I almost ran out of gas I had to stop and wait till the next day! Got to see the big basin and compared to our tow tank it was enormous !!! Now all gone …
I made some of this film ine the early 70's. Dave Rowland , PH2/Air Crewman, AFCCG Atlanic Fleet Combat Camera Group. I got hung off the bow with a camera with two trustworthy boatswain's mates hanging onto my legs to show how the hydrofoil cleaved through the water.
I've been watching people practice with hydrofoils for a while and reading about them and I don't understand why they have never been used, to compensate for the braking of displacement boats, not to make them fly, just to make their displacement faster and light. Can someone tell me why? Thank you .
Interesting how a lot of promising concepts, that in these days are being "rediscovered", were born decades ago, making a lot of nowdays "innovative" companies not so actually innovative...and it is interesting as well how eventually the "winning" design is still the usual hull...
