His descriptions are just overdone and I don't think that's surprising for a 16 year old kid. It takes time and practice using a more mature perspective to write things in a simpler way as well as knowing what to include, emphasize, and focus on. And what to avoid, in order to make the narrative better.

I'd argue that ruling on the upcast disintegrate. upcasting requires higher spell slots and higher checks to counter / dispel. also to gank a players ( very few ) nineth level spell slot and call it a 6th... no sir.
