Read ‘Coral comes High’ by George Hunt published 1944 for a stark first hand account of his companies action where 235 marines landed and 48 hours later only 78 survived. Honor them.
Many went down. She is the Mother to all the great lakes.I have seen how big those waves get in Superior when the winds whip from the NW. Out of the biggest ships. The Fitzgerald went down on the 10th of November 1975. That was a big ship. The Mayflower is one I want to go see
I'm REALLY late to the party, but thanks for posting! The visibility and good preservation of the wreck made for great images. I almost said out loud "don't go down that companionway...!" because, well, it actually gave me the creeps. Now that's a testament to good underwater filming.
Hello... I was just watching your video.... Pretty cool.... I am building an app of the National Park Isle Royale and I am wondering if you might consider allowing me to use your video in it... Of course the video will need to be completely legal like, so no toes are stepped on... You will be the owner and get all credit where due and a kick back with each app that I sell... Please consider this and you are welcome to contact me any time... Thanks Paul icrdesign@aol.com
It hit some rocks beneath the surface of the water, the captain handed the boat over to a rookie captain (John wick) who caused it to hit the rocks, he then grounded the ship where it sank for the most part, with the cabin and bow still sticking out of the water
Great video! Thank you!! It brings back a lot of memories. My dad, Vern Hinze was one of the first divers to explore the America back in the 50's. I remember as a kid being in awe of his tales of the America & other ships he dove on in lake Superior. I also remember I got my ass spanked for eating some of the candy sticks in a jar he salvaged from the America. They tasted like fresh peppermint candy canes..
I hope he took more than candy,it was totally legal to salvage prior to the 1980 bottom lands preserve act.And if he did your family should have some nice pieces from him.
Great Lakes shipwrecks are like time capsules. You get spoiled for the best and diving brown stains on an ocean floor lose all the appeal after you get spoiled for Great Lakes wrecks, and Lake Superior's Isle Royale is arguably the BEST wreck diving IN THE WORLD! ...Yup, I said it! Did you know they planned to raise the SS America in the mid-1960's and turn it into a museum ship? They even planned on sailing it back to Duluth, under it's own steam power, using it's original equipment after 37+ years in the lake! Then a SCUBA diver blew it up with dynamite in or around 1965 so that plan was scrapped. Let's see you do that with an ocean wreck! -Spoiled for the best
1995 I saw a documentary on this ship that was produced in 1984 on A&E. I believe the Diver's name was "Stallman". they showed the remains of a crew member in this ship with coveralls still on.
There was a skeleton on the floor of the engine room and it was removed by the Canadian government. Kamloops does still have a body on the catwalk of its engine room.
I'm going to Playa del carmen in a week or so and definitely want to check out this reef. Doesn't seem to be much marine life but the underwater landscape looks amazing and the water looks crystal!
Amazing! I don't know the first thing about SCUBA diving , but I suppose that one of the advantages of diving in the Great Lakes is that there are no dangerous nor ugly creatures like sharks, stingrays, octopuses, etc.
If at all any of Hong Kong's this Lantau Island's administrative personnel, responsible for the daily running & up-keeping of the island's infrastructure, reads on this suggestion. I hope they have in-store some plans to build some funicular trams by the side or sides, maybe flanking those enormously flighted stairs. In Malaysia,at 'Batu Caves',where there are 272 steps, they once even had a simple funicular tramcar of sorts to ferry the elderly devout to that high placed house of worship. How can anyone expect the elderly to be able to climb all of the 268 steps, all just to get to pay homage or reverence to the Buddha,w/o the very possibility of oneself having a heart seizure or that his or her knees finally gives & naturally tells them "we can go no farther, that was it".Most will probably just reached so far only a 3rd of the way from bottom, that will be about all that can be achieved. Yes,I am also aware of the many angles to this to take into consideration, most especially from the residents in these parts that are steeped in superstition, that will definitely look on this with a different or defensive perspective, placing precedence 1st with the Fung Shuei relationship to any changes, what's especially widely observed here in Hong Kong.
