Great video. I never knew that and I watch a lot of “how to tell your cartridge is fake” videos and I never knew that. Interesting. My suggestion for a video would be to “Check if a fake Pokemon Colosseum could trade to emerald (or ruby or sapphire, since fr and lg are harder to trade) then back to Colosseum. And is there any difference in the Pokemon being traded back and forth?” Thanks keep up the great content.
I think there is a way to mod a battery onto a repro i wonder if thats all it would take since the flash card works i assume it must just come with a battery?
It's crazy though it works with the Japanese Versions on the Everdrive but not the American one but yet it works on an American Transfer Pak so I'm confused on how Nintendo made that work lol
i know this is an old video fam, but your desktop upkeep gives me anxiety. make sure to save all them ROM files to an actual spot on your hardrive.. not just to the desktop <3
Thanks for the video, my version of Yellow isn't saving anymore and I wanted to start fresh on an emulator, this would allow me to write it back to the cart once I've replaced the battery right.
Yes, you will be able to put your save file from an emulator on to your original cart. Also it sounds like your Yellow cart needs the battery replaced.
The same thing happened when I used third-party Pokémon emerald on Pokémon box gc and the Colosseum bonus disk didn’t work, but it did work with my legit Sapphire game
Appreciate the video! I recently bought a Joey Jr bc my Sapphire save file was lost while I was playing. I was saving on the physical cartridge one day and the GBA’s batteries gave out as I was saving. When I turned Sapphire on again it only showed Options and New Game. Sound like something that can be fixed? 🤔
Hello, I'm a little late to the party, it's common knowledge nowadays that transferring from a repro to another gen won't work, but do we know why? As in, the technical details? I'd be extremely interested in learning about that, and I can't find any information about it whatsoever. EDIT: I actually found *some* details, so essentially, those repro carts for gen 3 use SRAM chips for the save data. SRAM is volatile, and there is no persistency after a reboot, so what they do is some kind of dark magic to copy the savefile to and from the FLASH chip where the rom is located at runtime. The original chips were using FLASH memory chips for the savefile, and those have persistency. This might be the reason why trading between a real and a repro gen 3 works, because the game is actually loaded/booted. And this would explain why trading to gen4 or from gamecube games wouldn't work. Because the game isn't loaded, and the SRAM chip is completely empty~ I think a way to test this theory would be if someone manages to make the SRAM chip of a repro cart persistent, by adding a battery to it, for example. I will continue my research~ TODO: Research SRAM chips and persistency, and what an SRAM patch on GBA roms is. EDIT2: Okay, I found a solution to make this work. I am 95% sure about it. So the basic idea about why this currently does NOT work is the fact that those repro carts are using SRAM instead of FLASH, which makes the save area not persistent when the game is off, as stated previously. The "Dark Magic" I was talking about is in fact called BANK SWITCHING, which makes the file save to and copy from a very specific area of the FLASH where the rom is located, so that when you turn it off, even if the SRAM empties itself, the save will still be there on the flash. To make those carts work with transferring to a gen4 game, or from a GC game, you have to use a battery backup on the SRAM chip that contains the savefile. The process is more simple than I initially expected, what you have to do is lookup the pinout of the SRAM chip online, and find its "BACKUP" pin. Now, connect a small CR1016 positive to it, and the negative to any ground on the cart, after that, the SRAM should persist when you turn it off. NOTE: This might (should?) require the rom to be un-patched. So you'd likely have to re-flash the repro cart after installing the battery.
I'd love to tell you that I would try this theory and come back to you, but I will most likely forget all of that in a week. Anyhow, thanks for the video! :D EDIT: I bookmarked the link to this video and ordered a repro lol, I will TRY to remember to write down my results here~
If you have reproduction cartridges for the GBA you can trade with legitimate copies. I picked up a reproduction Leaf Green and beat the story/Sevii islands so I could trade to Ruby, Saphire, and Emerald. I then was able to trade between the reproduction Leaf Green and Emerald. After that, I could clone pokemon at the battle tower and transfer them up to Diamond/Pearl/Platinum/HGSS. So yeah reproductions aren't perfect but in this market, I just wanted to play Leaf Green again and be able to move my team up to the other games.
Finally indeed! And it seems to work very well. I'm working on a Living formdex for both national and Go. They both are in Home. I did complete the Hisui and Paldea living formdex so far.
Nice! I’ve been slacking on Go in general. But it definitely helped me when I was trying to get all entries to complete the home Dex. Good luck and may you have favorable catch rates!
I believe there are a few repros that have batteries but they are basically nonexistent especially amongst the cheap ones you typically come across when buying from places like eBay.
Yea it suck however if you own a real copy I am able to trade between all of my copies so I trade to my real Firered from my fake emerald and leaf green. Would recommend
I tried out a repo on my stadium and I seen some people asking the same questions I had, so this might help some viewers: 1. Green was registered, but I couldn’t access the gb tower. 2. I tried my North American transfer and Japanese pak and there was no difference 3. I tired my North American and Japanese Pokemon stadiums, still didn’t work. I see some authentic green versions going relatively cheap, but I don’t know Japanese.
PSA: dual-slot mode does not work with reproduction games as well. Was trying to get a teddiursa in platinum with my production emerald, and nothing with a Lv. 36 repel trick for like 30 minutes. Checked the lady on Pal Park that gives decorations for the GBA games being inserted and also nothing.
No once the battery is dead the save is gone and it won’t hold any save data until it has a good battery. That’s why something like the Joey Jr is so important to backup save data before your battery fails.
So many use cases. My favorite is having backups of save files for battery save cartridges. Then you can swap batteries and not lose all of your hard work.
I want to say that Stadium 1 has the ROMs for the gen 1 games built in - Since you were using Green, even if it were a legitimate Japanese copy, I am doubtful that it would work since the game never came out and had no reason to be included. It might actually work in Stadium 2 though since it pulls the ROM from the cartridge instead.
SSFF says this is debunked, as there is no actual data in the files for the GB games. I had a repro of all three RBY and none could be read in the GB Tower, I assumed it was due to being "new" carts not having any save data on them
hi there, i would like to verify if there is other ways to transfer pokemons from the gen 3 games to HOME beside going through 3DS? i owned the GBA consoles, DS and switch but not the 3DS. neither do i have the games for 3ds as well. I want to get my mons ready into the bank so i can start playing violet and scalett.
The problem with the repro gen3 carts sadly is that the save is combined with the rom file on the card.. oddly makes it the best card to hand to someone for a cheat proof way to play the game. It is nearly impossible to inject a save file into one of these.. Bad and good all in one... these cards are also capable of being reflashed to another game..
A cool work around for everyone. You can buy all the reproductions you want then buy ONE real cartridge and trade from fake to real. That way you can connect to Colosseum and Gale of Darkness. This would also fix the Pal Park issue with Gen 4 games.
