Welcome to my channel! My name is Anna and I'm deaf.

I was born with a severe-profound hearing loss and currently wear a cochlear implant. And a hearing aid sometimes in the other ear.

This channel is about my personal experiences being deaf and to answer questions people have about what it's like to be deaf.

I will discuss various topics- including accessibility and the reality of being deaf.

These videos are not professionally done- and all done by me, and will always include captions. Turn them on if you need them!

Thank you for watching!

Will the Bluetooth work for RU-vid or other apps like netflix/Disney?
@AnnaFletcher
@AnnaFletcher 2 года назад
Depending on where you're streaming this from. I use the bluetooth connection to directly stream to my implant when watching anything on my phone. Some computers have bluetooth built in to use for direct streaming to the implant. Otherwise - I use the mini mic to stream sounds to the implant which has been handy for computers with no bluetooth enabled, airplanes (yes, airplanes!) and other possible tech sources.

Wow having an implant seems scary my friend just had hers done she don’t wear them she said it’s horrible and to be honest I don’t think I want an implant if the sounds .. sound strange 😵‍💫 as I’m so used to hearing with hearing aids all my life but I’m profoundly deaf now
@AnnaFletcher
@AnnaFletcher 3 года назад
A cochlear implant is not for everyone - I used to be against the idea because it didn't work for a few friends of mine, but sometimes you've got nothing to lose when you're profoundly deaf to go for something that could help you. It helped me as I live the majority of my life in a hearing world. As for the sounds - it sounds funny at first, but your brain adapts and learns what the sounds are and I can say I hear things better through my cochlear implant than I ever did with my hearing aids.

Well I decided for myself when I was 20 to get the implant. So I couldn't really comment on whether you should make that decision for your child but at least research the deaf community, sign language in addition to cochlear implants.

Hi Anna! Thank you for comparing those. I grew up with hearing aids and had been familiar with some sounds. But I couldn't make out voices unless I read transcripts. I'm profound deaf. Does cochlear implant help you hear better (let's say when you have adapted to those man-made sounds after much training)? Like hearing voices in phone etc?

I set timers on my phone so I get flash and vibrate. My real enemy is the vent fan. I've left them on for days if not weeks many times. It seems like more appliances are getting connected with apps; hopefully the kitchen will catch up to laundry soon. But it's tough as a renter to deal with anything furnished, because you generally get the cheapest thing.
@AnnaFletcher
@AnnaFletcher 3 года назад
Yes I do that sometimes myself but half of the time my phone is not with me in the kitchen, so I just use whatever is nearest to me for a timer. It'll be so nice to have the smart appliances someday!

I have hearing loss due to an autoimmune disease. I recently just got hearing aids but I am still have a ton of problems understanding people at work. Would a cochlear implant help me understand?
@AnnaFletcher
@AnnaFletcher 3 года назад
It can help you but an important thing to know is that a CI is different sounds (man-made sounds), it requires a lot of relearning to listen in the first year after the surgery. I definitely can understand a lot better now than when I had hearing aids, but it was a long journey to that understanding. It's always an adjustment period, and with hearing aids, you might need to be more clear with people of how they talk can help you. I do better with those who talk clearly, naturally louder voice, and more visual mouth movements than with those who are quiet speakers. Hope this helps! I'm always happy to speak further in an email and answer more questions. 😊

Interesting because I think deafness has given me an advantage when it comes to travelling as I'm already used to being kept in the dark at home. The language barrier is a shock to hearing people but for me it's like 🤷🏼‍♀️... "You don't know what's going on around you? Welcome to my world!" It's true though that I have to tell fight attendants up front to relay the announcements in writing, and they usually don't. Frustrating!
@AnnaFletcher

Definitely a plus! I'm only anxious during the traveling bit but once I'm in a place, it's easier for sure.

I see Warren has a beard , you still read him ok though . On the flip side women with red lipstick are better to lipread .I don`t think your husband will help you with that one (joke). Do you have trouble defining words like fifty or sixty ,fifteen or sixteen & many others ?
@AnnaFletcher
@AnnaFletcher 4 года назад
I do have trouble with similar words sometimes! My husband keeps his beard clean around the lips usually for me to lipread. But he also has gotten good at moving his mouth more than others do. Many with beards tend to be mumblers too.

Some info that helped me to understand limited hearing and how speech is heard / interpreted I found on youtube about a year ago . Check out a Dr Ted Venema a Canadian Audiologist I believe , he takes the simple trouble to explain stuff that`s easy to follow. His version of reading an Audio test chart I found helpful. My hearing loss came about in the late sixties as a 17 year old working in a rock breaking gang (Jackhammers) no protection then . I really only learned later when the RAAF knocked me back . The Vietnam war was still going then . Since I`ve had many tests but no explanations as to what they mean . Some audiologists even keep talking while typing ,my guess is they`re in a hurry to yell next ! Enough grumbling from me , all the best to you & Warren .

Anna I`m glad you like music . Beethoven was deaf too . His 5th has the ultimate for base sound & vibration (cannon fire) For which being on the receiving end in Vienna about 1809 ish partially contributed to his final hearing loss.As a deaf person you may feel a greater connection than someone who can hear ? Go on wikipedia ,yes it is a long story but you can still jump ahead to get the grasp of it.Pick a wet day and eat the whole story ,I hope it works for you too?
@trevorzzealley2670
@trevorzzealley2670 4 года назад
Thank you for a firsthand explanation of the two . It`s good to get info form a recipient of both types instead of someone with a vested interest in one or the other .After all information helps to make decisions & when that`s balanced & non-biased than more notice can be given than sales pitch . Well worth while video .

Wow, first time I've seen an example of these, and that's ... not helpful, ha ha. I would never be able to lipread though that! I may be dropping this link to everyone (yeah, the entire world) who excitedly drops me a link about these "clear masks". I think the full on faceshield type of thing is what you'd have to look for tho the typical ones are open along the bottom... It would be lovely if most public establishments got theses for their employees.
@AnnaFletcher
@AnnaFletcher 4 года назад
Heh. Yeah. It's a little easier for me when it's my husband using it as I know his mouth movements, but there are moments of it fogging really badly and I'm just lost. I have heard of a company called Clear Mask that is taking orders now (it's fully clear and anti-fog plastic) - which will be good for businesses/healthcare I think!
@AbidingFaithCast
@AbidingFaithCast 4 года назад
We're looking for clear masks to use during our meetings. I have a full coverage mask that I like, but public speaking is limited in it. We take for granted how much of communication involves facial expression - including the mouth. Thanks for giving us a practical look at a clear mask. By the way, the 'fogging' problem could be resolved with a one-way exhaust/exhale port on one or both sides of the mask. It has to be one-way to keep from inhaling harmful airborne particles.
@AnnaFletcher
@AnnaFletcher 4 года назад
This is just one example of a mask, if you're looking for a good quality mask, check out clear mask - probably good for your business. It's anti fogging plastic that I've got to look for next.
