Mental Health Counseling Student & Clinical Intern. Join me in my journey through Grad School, attaining my LMHC licensure and starting my Private Practice.
Do you happen to know how hard it is to get a job as a counselor now days or in the next few years (assuming you're qualified)? I know employment struggles are all over the news but no sure if clinical mental health counselors are included in that bunch.
Hi Klaudia, I'm starting grad school this august for a full time mental health counseling program. I'm confused between the ipad and a macbook. Can you tell which one would be better overall? I assume we'd have a lot of reading to do, would the ipad be a better fit? I'd love to know your thoughts.
Hi! Congratulations on starting the program. So when I started out I had a laptop for my papers and homework which was needed to do the assignments. Then I got the iPad which was easy to use. After my first year of grad school I got a iMac 🖥️ an actual computer that stayed at home the big screen was a game changer. Now that I am in private practice I got a MacBook Air 💻. On the daily I use that to do my notes and research and I use the iPad for telehealth calls. So to help answer your question. If you don’t have a laptop or a desktop I would focus on that first. Unless your comfortable doing all that work on a iPad which I had the iPad Pro with the Magic Keyboard. In my option I didn’t like doing my homework and papers on there, the apps are not the same as they are on the desktop/ laptop. If you have that and you want the iPad go for it. It’s easy to read books , highlight things with the apple pen, and it easy to bring with you. With all that said yes get the iPad if you already have a desktop 😀😀😀
i’m seeing this video, really processing the waiting game for my permit while i’m unemployed. I’m offered a job but can’t legally work without the permit and that may take weeks to months as mentioned in some of the comments here. I’m glad i graduated but waiting for this permit is impacting my patience and financial stability…
Thank you so much for sharing. I hope that your permit comes quickly. This is the part of the process many people don’t discuss. What program did you finish ?
Hi! Love your videos! I'm thinking of moving from GA to FL to do my practicum and internship. Does registering as a RMHCI happen AFTER I finish my practicum/internship hours in my current program? Thx!!
Hi im going to major in Interdisciplinary Studies with Emphasis in Social and Behavioral Sciences. I want to be a Mental Health Counselor, in California i believe the license i would need is the LPCC, but what is the difference between LPCC and LMHC?
I can relate to this, I start practicum /internship in August. I feel like I have to be a perfectionist, especially with my cohort being the first at my university.
Do the best you can. Don’t burn yourself out. An A is an A if it’s a 90% or a 100%. So what you can, rest, spend time with people, don’t forget all the other things while your in the program
What’s the hours like with the intern? You said there are night time hours but typically how many hours a week are you expected work? Can you modify your schedule like work certain days and not others?
Hi mam ! I have completed my (b.a. - b.ed integrated 4 year program). I am really interested in counseling . What could be a good course related to it that has a good scope? Can i pursue masters in counseling from a bachelor in teaching background? Pls guide .
That’s awesome. Advice would be to keep an open mind in this field you will see a spectrum of diagnosis and people. I think in your field there is a lot of mental health things but they are not all like that. You will do great. 👍 be yourself and listen more than talk
Hello I am new to your channel and have watched a few videos so far. Would you say grad school is a lot more internship than it is regular sit in classes ? Is it more papers than exams? Etc.
Not sure if you have a video on this but I was worried about online schools due to the issues of finding internships ect... Do you have any info about this?
To be honest you have to find your internship on your own. The school I went to had a big list of places and I did end up going with the one of those sites but most of my peers found their own place. I did a lot of cold calling and sending emails before I decided on the treatment center I went to. My school has to approve the supervisor there and do a new contract with them. I always recommend working at a center for internship because you get to see a lot of different clinicians and how they work. Also group therapy is a lot of hours and you learn so much. I don’t think I would have wanted to do 1:1 in internship for a whole year without getting paid.
I don’t share that online. You can DM me on instagram I’ll be more than happy to chat with you about this. Are you looking for programs online or in person ?
Hi! It depends on where you work but I usually wore long pants/ jeans occasionally. A nice long or short sleeve blouse. I would wear closed toe shoes sometimes boots or flats. I would always have a jacket or cover up as well. Something that’s comfortable to sit in
Hi KD, I appreciate your insights about balancing graduate school and life. I remember discovering your videos before the start of my internship. It's been two days since i have completed my first-year hours, and can't imagine how much free time I have. It is bizarrely relatable how graduate school can create isolation.
Thank you so much for sharing this insight. I always hear quotes that say “you have to do something really hard for a short amount of time, compared to a lifetime, to set yourself up, for the rest of your life.” This experience felt just like this for me. I’m glad I did it, I do feel “set up” to a certain extent. I have more confidence in myself overall to apply myself.
I'm so glad you covered this topic! I am in graduate school now and my husband is always telling me, "It doesn't have to be perfect!" For some reason, I often think, "Everything needs to be exactly perfect before I can submit it." It causes a lot of stress. Something I am working on in myself for sure!
It’s a good think when we can catch ourselves in the act and stop the behavior. It’s almost like an automatic thing. I hope your grad school experience is going well
@@kdcounseling Thanks. It is. I am beginning my Practicum class on Monday. I just need to continue working on that perfectionism, lol! I love your videos! I've watched many of them and find them super helpful. I appreciate you sharing your experience. It's so nice to find your videos and be reminded that many of us are experiencing the same things. Being an online student, it is easy to feel like you're the only one struggling with things, like perfectionism. Keep up the great work! You are certainly motivating the future of this field!
@@kdcounseling Do you happen to know how different grad school is compared to undergrad? I want to know what I’m getting myself into and what’s expected of me in terms of assignments and projects.
@@andrewc5476 it’s a more targeted approach. You’re learning more about one discipline instead of 20 diff subjects. Everyone is an overachiever and knows their thing. In grad school you are analyzing and synthesizing the assignments. Hope that helps
You should make a vid on the transition from one career to another in terms of money- how long it takes to fill your “book”/can quit your old job, stuff like that
That is a good idea. The thing is even if I would open my spots of availability for 30 people a week where I work would fill it but the mental health field is so up and down sometimes even the most seasoned person can have no shows and it also depends on time of the year and what population you work with. I’ll make a video 😀
What are the opportunities for introverts regarding mental health counseling? Do you think SM is the best platform for them or real jobs are open as well?
I would say both are great you just have to find what works for you. I really enjoy working via tele-health I’m able to provide great services but in the comfort of my office/ home
I am binge watching your channel like it's a show on Netflix, one day I'll be able to use the thanks feature... because your videos are truthfully very helpful.
I really relate to a lot of this. I've been going back and forth about trying for a third recording for ONE assignment that's due next week. The first recording was GREAT but I accidentally only recorded the audio and I need audio and visual. The second is pretty good but my cat kept hopping in the background and I might get dinged for that, and I just didn't explain some things quite as well but still can see all the skills I needed to show. So, I'm like, do I do yet another mock session to see if I can get it really really good or do I just accept this might not be as high of a grade as I want. I also was NEVER a perfectionist in undergrad and felt pretty low about my low GPA and never thought I'd make it in grad school. Which means it feels so damn good to get those 100% and I hate letting that go.
Thanks for sharing. I can also relate to this. There was a thing a teacher said to me a 90 is still an a 80 is still a B. If we are going to stress over a 90 vs a 100 it’s the same thing. Is it worth the stress ? Not sure that makes sense but something clicked for me when I heard that 😃
Thank you so much for this video & sharing your experience. I am about to finish up my first semester in grad school and this is something I’ve been thinking about and reflecting on lately along with experiencing some imposter syndrome. I find all of your videos to be so helpful. ❤
Hi! I really appreciate you watching my videos. I truly means a lot. I am planning on doing another video on imposter syndrome because I find myself working through this with my clients. Self-care balance is so important and knowing when to stop and just submit the assignment is also key to a less stressful time in grad school.
I’m graduating in December so I’m finishing practicum and starting internship 1 and I’m honestly so ready to be done with school! Dragging myself over the finish line
You got this! I can definitely relate. It’s that point where you can see the end and have an idea what things will look like after graduation but it’s the last push. Keep me updated on your progress 😊
As always, your video has been very helpful. For me, you are helping set the stage for what is to be an intense period of growth. Sometimes I feel I might be 'already grown' and good already...but Im sure my professors will put me in my place when the time comes. 🌊
Hi! Yeah I found that there is always something to learn about myself. Things that I haven’t thought about would come up and I had to reflect on how I need to shift my perspective. Professors have a way of doing this for sure 👍
ngl sometimes i feel like youtube is another discussion post exercise... been writing so many of them. 😆 but great thoughts as always. i'm without a doubt a perfectionist, but also have areas where i suspend those behaviors (yay). also i love your point about planned early failure as a mechanism to say "i didn't even try." i'll remember that! ❤
I work full time and I’m a full time single parent to two disabled kids without any in-person support while in grad school. I’m pulling a perfect 4.0 without a single point in any class taken off right now but I’m only going part time and I feel like I’m ALWAYS behind my classmates. I needed to hear ALL of this. Thank you so much for sharing your experience! It gives me hope that I’ll be able to succeed without being “perfect.”
That’s awesome work you’re doing. Keep going it does pay off in the end it’s definitely worth it. I thought it would be interesting to look back at my experience and share it with my people on here :)
@@kdcounseling I sincerely appreciate it. There is so much pressure to be perfect and it’s exhausting and self-imposed. I’m NOT perfect and I need to remember that no one expects me to be. I always appreciate your videos!
Does Florida require you to take the ncmhce for licensure? I'm in North Carolina and they only require you to take one test of your choice from NCE, CPC, or NCMHCE
Hello, and thank you for your videos. I am a current undergrad student in Southern California (Psychology). I plan on moving to Florida after I graduate to attend Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando for their MA in counseling. I wanted to ask about hours post graduation. In Cali, we have to earn 3000 hours as an "Associate" MFT, or LPC in order to seek licensure. Is it the same in Florida? Is their an "associate" level, post Masters degree where you can earn an income while getting your supervised hours? Thanks!
@kdcounseling Thank you for the quick reply. I did have one more question. After seeing some of your videos, I understand that you are interested in having a private practice (I am as well). Concerning Florida, you would have to complete your 1500 hours and become licensed before starting a private practice, correct?
@@ruiz0369 Yes 1500 hours is what you have to have plus passing the test than you will be “fully licensed” right now I have a license it’s good for 5 years
@kdcounseling OK, thanks. So, can you begin a private practice, pre-1500 hours? I know you would have to already have clients and such, but just trying to know the rules before I move our family to Florida. Your current 5-year license is as a "registered counselor, and not a "licensed" one? Sorry to bug, but thankful for your responses.
Hi, Katie. You are exactly 1 year ahead of me and I have been following you since I started as part of my professional development plan. You mentioned warching different podcasts while in school that helped you prepare. I was wondering if you could share your thoughts on the best professional development resources that you used or wished you would have used during school that was usuful during your intern or current work. Actually, any preperatory info would be great!! Thanks and keep posting your videos!!
Hi! I watched a lot of The Humberman lab podcast, specifically the ones on different disorders it’s a great resource. Doc Snipes on RU-vid is a great resource, and other creators that are specialist on whatever you’re seeking out.
@@kdcounseling thanks! I am in the middle of watching your practicum videos rn! Excellent info, you have been such a life saver for me honestly, by watching your videos I have reduced my anticipation anxiety! Thanks again.
Can you also talk about the fact that somenplaces you have to pay for supervision? I think its important for people to know and how to navigate through the business side of our field.
Thanks for the update!! I start school on Thursday, and even though I’m two years away from graduating, all of your info is SO helpful. 🙏🏻 And I’m happy for you that you’re finding your groove in your practice. So awesome.
