Video clips of cab rides and trains on the coal route between Westport and Reefton. Welcome all subscribers, i hope you all enjoy the rides and the scenery, cheers throttle joc. Well it has been sometime since i posted videos on my channel, things have changed and i have moved from the Westcoast to the Eastcoast and now work out of Picton, hopefully i will soon post some footage from the East side of the South Island for you to enjoy.
Great video! The line was so badly damaged that I didn't think it would *ever* be repaired. To be able to do it in a year or so was amazing - especially given the large number of tunnels and bridges! Really good footage of the huge amount of coastal land uplifted by the quake! I think I saw the Papatea fault scarp there too, at Waipapa Bay (although I think it has almost eroded away now - it doesn't take long.)
Interesting view of a piece of country i know well yet it's a route i have never followed! I love picton, I have always imagined spending my last years there! thanks for sharing
I know its long ago, but I have only just discovered this gem. Not too many female train enthusiasts out there, but my dad was a big one and its in the blood!
That’s got to up the game on an already hot diesel.., forced to do the last part breathing it’s own hot air… Lol say nothing of the alternator n motors
2000 tonne, but this was when brightstar was 1st put in them and it was a mess, the locos wouldhit wet rail and derate and sand, then the sand would stop whiler the loco was building up traction and it would flip out again. The only way to stop it was use the independent brake. But we got our hands smacked at the time for doing such. Later on the parctice was approved, but not by what we in the SI had been doing, but by NI trials on the then milk route. Funny that
@@throttlejoc Man I miss the old man.. he made us feel big…. Like we were the driver… like real men…🌹🌹 lol we were like 7/8 to about 14/ 15 yrs. We had to pull the park brake up…, lol sometimes I’d hear him go back & quietly pull it tight…. I always felt like I was important 🌹🌹 and those locos/ exhausts… when down in the load…
@@throttlejoc Cheers for the vid!! Mate we grew up driving them😂.. our old man drove them out of Westfield…, I was 13 when I drove into Te Rapa👍 My brother is a loco maintainer in ChCh.., they fix em😂
@@raymondwelsh6028 Is that the same for passenger trains? I thought they would have British HST sets capable of 130 MPH. I wouldn't feel very stable on narrow gauge!
The NZ mainline network is in cape gauge. The same mainline gauge used in Japan, Taiwan, South Africa, most other former British colonies in Africa, and in the Australian states of Tasmania, Queensland, and Western Australia. The maximum speed on the NZ mainline is 120km/h (~75mph in backward units). Although most trains rarely go much faster than 90km/h. So yeah I can’t imagine trains going over 200km/h on the NZ network either. I can’t imagine why anyone would.
@@shhmule I don’t mean to be rude. But where would you ever get the idea that now-retired 50 year old HST units used in some country on the other side of the world would ever be used in NZ?! We barely have any intercity passenger rail services. Population base is low and political leadership has been pro-automobile for 50 years.
What's the go with cabride's ? I've got an application in as a starting step as a Rail Operator, looking to progress to what you're doing. Would just love that opportunity to see and feel the role, ask questions from someone in the know!
Pretty hard to get a Cabride these days where Tunnels are involved, one has to have done Tunnel gas course etc, days of just getting a Cabride are gone. How did you get on with the Job application ?
Mechanical aptitude and working knowledge of diesel power plants counts for nothing. Asked for feedback on rejection and got a copy of the same text in the rejection email... Literally a copy and paste
@@produKtNZ I remember reading about a guy who got rejected 17 times, got through on the 18th. Also know of a guy who had loco experience, knowledge of signals etc - didn't count for anything, also rejected. I see your comment is 2 years old, what has happened since? Did you keep applying?
Just felt i had covered the coal route i run so stopped, then our depot got downsized in 2015 and i moved to Picton for 3 yrs 6 mths. In 2019 i got the opportunity to return to Westport so i did as we had the house there and i would travel back home from Picton on my days off. Now days it is a bit had to record unless you a go pro as we are not allowed to use cameras etc. No i haven't retired yet, still got at least 6 yrs to go
Love your vids, great to see a new upload. Any chance of getting some footage around the Rolleston/Selwyn area? Any inside info on what locos are being considered to replace the DXs? Cheers.
