@1tinMan

I'm a den leader, Assistant Cubmaster of a few years, but I am also a new Unit Commissioner. I've reached out to my DC a few times about being assigned to a pack. He's promised to speak w his ADC about connecting me, but it's still not getting anywhere. Seems as though no UC's with 2 and 3 units want to make room for a new UC who's ready to help. Growing disheartened, both at the pack level and at the district level. Not the scouts I remember from my youth or the healthy, fun, involved kind of program I care so much about and promote.

This is very dishonest on the part of scouting. Initially, the move was presented as separate troops for boys and girls. Most of us saw the combining of boys and girls into a single troop coming a mile away and feel that this was the plan all along. Too bad since BSA was such a unique and powerful program for young men. This change makes scouting just like every other co-ed activity out there and will likely be a catalyst to another great organization biting the dust or becoming a fraction of what it used to be. As a former Scoutmaster for many years, it is painful to not support this organization any more due to this level of deceit. As we all know a scout is Trustworthy. Not so much the leadership of scouting.

I was putting in my cubs summer camp advancement using the new scoutbook plus. The website runs very slowly. It took me an hour to put 3 adventures in for 2 scouts. Will this be improved? This is a big reason why so many units migrated away from internet advancement in the first place.

Can troops who are single gender allow girls to join in September, or is it only for linked troops? I ask this because my granddaughter is crossing over in February and there is only one linked troop in town and not other girl troops. I would like her to stay with our Chartered Org which has a pack and a troop. We did have a girl troop for a couple years but couldn't keep the minimum of 5 to keep it going.
@erikjohnsen3135
@erikjohnsen3135 14 дней назад
No. For the pilot program, National has said they prefer to use Linked troops, since the are already basically set up to do it. If a single-gender troop were to join the pilot, and then National decides not to allow co-ed troops, then the girls will be stuck without a chair when the music stops. I think the best thing for you to do at this point would be to start a linked troop with your affiliated troop, if they are open to it. Also, recruit hard for more girls at that age.
@reedbeazley3914
@reedbeazley3914 19 дней назад
This is absolutely asinine. I am more than ok with the single gendered troops. Mixing genders will only distract the scouts regardless of gender. Not another dime from myself or my family, enjoy the boat.

They waited a year too late. You have girls that came up in family packs that are now going to have to find a girl's troop. Charter organizations are going to have to go through the whole process of setting up new troops for those girls that are crossing over.

I hope real world observations of external parties (outside of the unit/district) are recorded to see if it this pilot is really in the best interest of the kids. Not just unit meetings but unit activities and especially camping. We ALL know that there are units already running their units this way without permission and in my opinion not always in the kids interest but the parent interest or at worse not safely.
@erikjohnsen3135
@erikjohnsen3135 23 дня назад
Yes, there are troops already running an integrated model, and I've spoken with pretty much all of them in my council. No one is dissatisfied with the program. No kids are quitting because they're "forced" to be with the opposite sex. The only issue I've seen is sometimes disagreement on what game is played during troop meetings. Other than that, it's business as usual.

One year is not enough. Multi-year observation/pilot is advisable. In many international units I observed at the Word Jamboree in WV, the SPLs are dominated by females because they mature earlier and thus boys may not have an equal opportunity to be higher level Junior Leaders. Good to see the BSA is catching up with the AOL program changes. They should have done it years ago. I started doing the Boy Scout methods with my boys when they started Webelos in 4th grade and had great success. We graduated 12 into Boy Scouts and one crossed the bridge to the road of life (did not continue in scouts). We did patrol method - patrol leaders (new one elected each month so they all got a taste of it), patrol flag and yell, patrol patch on their uniforms, patrols in formation at start and end of meetings, patrols camped as patrols, patrols planned and cooked their meals for the campouts, (we camped about every two months). At every meeting they recited scout oath and law, had a chaplain aide, we did denners, etc. I pushed them beyond the Webelos/AOL requirements and they loved it and they grew - they were big boys! They performed. They could tie knots and lash, build fires and run a dutch oven. We stuck out at the cub scout gatherings and folks noticed how mature they were. Absolutely no bellyaching about it from the boys or the parents. I had several reliable parents that helped facilitate their work and it worked well.

The comments below are very familiar to when UK Scouting changed to include girls back in the 1990's. It is now very normal to have mixed troops. I was a scout leader back then and had my reservations but looking back now I do wonder what all the fuss was about, it's just normal. It is also normal that people don't like change but change sometimes has to happen. Scouting is a force for good and in time it will be looked back on as welcome and a progressive move. By the way, the girls movement (The Guides) are still today just as successful.

This a opportunity lost, should have broadcast Roger Krone's discussion instead. History of the organization is important and a story that should be told, like BP's sister was key to starting a youth program for girls, the cooperation with Campfire Girls (started be BSA's founders wives) since 1910s, women leaders have been around since 1930's, Coed Explorers and Coed camp staff being a thing for over 50 years, and Scouting/USA was the branding in the late 1970s, etc, etc. Whoever is running the PR on this rollout, isn't doing a outstanding job. Again, opportunity lost.

If the Bobcat Adventure is the first required and one of the requirements is "choose a Patrol name and elect a patrol leader", how will this work if you have new AOL scouts coming after the Den has already completed this adventure? I know she had mentioned that most of the time it's scouts that have been in the program awhile, but we do get new AOL scout through the school year. I think this needs to be modified from elect a patrol leader or learn how a patrol leader is selected. If election has not taken place then elect a patrol leader.

This is rebranding with a logo change. Uniforms currently have the "BSA" abbreviation and above the pocket many people in the community do not recognize what that is. I look forward to new uniforms displaying the "Scouting America" brand rather than an abbreviation. What information sources are representing this rebranding as a problem? Can someone help me understand what dire outcome can result from an updated logo? Most organizations a update their logo much more frequently than this one. Many major companies have adjusted their branding in recent years. Please remember to follow the Scout Oath and Scout Law in all communications.
