Hello! I have a question. I want to become a Pure Land Buddhist, but I live in Russia, and in my country this tradition is almost not represented. As far as I understand, it is necessary to take Refuge, is it possible to take it without the presence of a monk?
Hello, thank you for your comment. In principle, the initiation ceremony is conducted in the presence of a priest, but this is not necessary in your case. Thank you Hojo-San! Is it important how fast and with which rhythm one chants? I usually try to chant like it feels natural to me and where I can still focus on the syllables. I am usually reciting faster than in the Video
Thank you for the comment. Basically, the tempo and rhythm can be whatever pace is comfortable for you to chant. Priests usually chant slowly. If you chant the verses slowly, checking your own voice, you could better appreciate the content of the verses. Namu Amida Butsu ^/\^
Amitoufo, oshosan, 🙏🏾 I do not know if you still respond to this post as it is very old. I am unsure from your talk and some of the comments if you are Jodo Shu or Jodo shin Shu? I am a Chinese ordained Zen priest. We practice Zen and Jodo as the same practice but different path. I currently teach Zen at a Jodo Shu temple, the abbot finds no conflict, as the same mind of Chinese practice, however overall in Japan they as you state are separate. I am just curious for my mind only, your sect as it does not state a difference between the two. I have found that Jodo Sho is not just the belief but also the active practice, where Jodoshinshu is more on the belief. As with Christianity. 🙏🏾
Namu Amida Butsu. Thanks for your comment. I am a priest of Jodo Shu. When I made this post, my main purpose was not to describe the differences between Jodo Shu and Jodo Shinshu, but to broadly introduce Japanese Pure Land Buddhism to Westerners. I have summarized the differences between Jodo Shu and Jodo Shinshu on our website. Please refer to it, if you like. en.rinkaian.jp/essay_cms/ch018/
@@rinkaian_channel5610 Oshosan, Arigatou for your fast reply and effort. I read the link, it was the same as what I have been lead to believe from my studies and talks with other priests. It helps to clarify the post for me. Although the two are basically the same. Same purpose, like Rinzai Shu and Soto shu. i will listen with greeter understanding to the rest of your series, as I am always interested in deepening my understanding of the paths of Buddhism. I promised my late Abbot I would continue to learn. If you ever come to Osaka, it would be a pleasure and honor to meet you. Perhaps meet with the head monk where I am an associate priest, which is Komyoji Jodo Shu temple in Amagasaki. Amitoufo 🙏🏾
Thank you very much for this explanation. What do you think about the following: i use to have always melodies or songs in my mind I often tend to sing the Nembutsu according to the melodies of favourit songs Of couse i choose soft and gentle melodies/ songs for this. I also tend to say the Nembutsu in my own style while working because i do hard physical work and it helps me to not get short of breath: Amidabu Amidabu Amidabu A- mi-da. Amidabu Amidabu Namu Amida Bu Thank you. Namu Amida Butsu🙏
I so wish I could believe in the Pureland and Amida as real and not just symbolic. Thinking in a modern way, how can we know that Amida is a “ real “ Buddha. Thank you so much for your teachings ☺️🙏🏼
Each sect of Japanese Buddhism holds eye-opening services for new Buddhist statues. Jodo Shu also does this. However, this assumes that there is a Jodo Shu temple near you where you can request the service. If there is no Jodo Shu temple nearby, I don't think you need to do it. In my experience, a statue of Amida Buddha symbolizes Amida Buddha, not because you perform a formal eye-opening ceremony, but because you feel and worship Amida Buddha through the statue. The ritual is only a measure to support the Nembutsu belief.
@@rinkaian_channel5610 Thanks Reverend for the answer. Unfortunately in Italy we don't have temples Jodo shu or shinshu, so it's impossible to have a direct contact with a priest. I hope that this situation will change in future, in the meantime I will refer to your website and the lessons available in English. Namu Amida Butsu 🙏🙏
it is said that more people who practice Pure Land teachings indeed obtain the satori that people who practice Zen, this basically christianity in the evangelic form, taht is why is not well known in western, there was no need, but now yes there is such need for budist practitioners who rejected christianity.
Exactly, Buda Amitaba really exist because Buda said it, many many years from now people will question the existence of a Buda named Shamyamuni, they are already doing it !! Namo Amida Butsu.
I've watched one minute of this video and I want to say that you make me feel so chill, you talk in a way that is so understandable and you also look like a very good person.
