Impressive knowledge, especially for someone so young! How he seen so many classic movies already?! This kid can have a great career as Kung Fu Movie Reviewer! 🌟
@@dakariholder02 Subscribed already! 👍I watched some of the other videos on your channel too, good stuff! 👍 I think you mentioned about being a senior now etc.. Makes me think.. I remember I was around 12 yrs old when I started watching Kung Fu flicks, a bit off-topic but one of the first ones I ever watched was Project A (I know that's more of an 'action-comedy' etc.) but I always remember Lee Hoi Sang in that movie, of course he's been in so many other great movies over the years. Sadly passed away couple days ago 😔, RIP Lee Hoi Sang, true legend of the business.
Dude. I know everyone has their own opinion and our ranking of these films will be different for everyone. However. Shaolin Martial Arts is not only the BEST of this cycle of films but is one if the best films the Shaw Bros studio ever produced. Its the Ultimate atrchitypal Kung Fu movie. It has everything and the casting was perfectt. And you rank it so low???? Also Men From the Monestary is almost identical to Heroes Two th story and formula are identical but Men From the Monestary is way better and more refined than Heroes Two. Yet you Rank Heroes Two higher??? Friend, clean your eyes and watch them again. Shaolin Martial Arts has never been bettered.
Thank you for watching, my friend. 😂😂 For me, this ranking is based off of overall enjoyment. I like all of these films, there’s just obviously some that I enjoy more than others. Heroes Two is straightforward, consistent, and fast-paced. Men from the Monastery utilizes unorthodox storytelling to create a compelling vision of the Shaolin story. Shaolin Martial Arts is surprisingly modern, coherently effective, and stands on its own, but the pacing is quite sluggish for me in parts. That’s just me.
Nephew!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's a True Bop! I love, love, love it!!! you truly brought it all together seamlessly and with such precision! DO IT Then!!!
Dakari! Congrats on getting the new set. I forgot 5 superfighters was in it, nice touch. My young Auntie is good, and there’s a loose sequel called the lady is the boss. It was on prime, but I don’t have think it’s there anymore. It’s good to keep the other versions since some of those commentaries like in DD dvd of 36 chambers featured Rza which is gold. Hopefully I will get my hands on this set in the near future.
I highly suggest you do. I got this on eBay for $94, man. I’ve definitely seen Lady is the Boss and thought it was decent. Can’t wait to finish the set. 🙏🏾💯
Boom, bussin’ out the SB Vol.2, lucky cat! I have a few Dragon Dynasty Blu-rays and noticed many of them are actually in 1080i, so this should definitely be a significant upgrade! I’m waiting for upgrades to John Woo flicks like The Killer and Hard Boiled, which I have on DD Blu-ray and their video quality aren’t all that by recent standards.
@@dakariholder02 cool! I noticed Five Elements Ninjas will be on the next set, one of my SB faves! The villain in it, Chan Wai-Man, was a real life badass and a Triad boss.😎
Damn…you have a very impressive library! We share many titles that I have not seen in other folk’s collection on YT, and you certainly have many on my wishlist, like that deluxe Lawrence of Arabia boxset! You know, that film and 2001 are 2 titles that must be watched on the biggest screen possible to get the most pleasure from. I watched both in 4k just recently on my new 75” OLED and I was in my own home theater heaven!
Btw, wanna trade your Criterion Bruce Lee set for my old school Godzilla set?😂 I held off from getting it because I have so many versions of Bruce Lee flicks on VHS, DVD and Blu-ray over the years, but now craving it from seeing it in your library lol! I grew up watching the Showa Era Godzilla films and thought they were cool when I was little, but most of them look a bit silly now😅
@@dakariholder02 lol it’s all good! So does Enter The Dragon in this set look even better than the WB Blu-ray, and does it have more cool bonus material? My wife got me The Godfather trilogy 4k and watching it now😎
This was the 1st Jackie Chan movie I saw and my brother took me to see it at a Theater in Taiwan when I was 8. There was a huge line because Jackie was the biggest star in Asia at that time. This movie also got me hooked on Jackie because it was hilarious too and the theater was filled with LOL!
It’s very cool to see SB flicks so appreciated by young folks like yourself! I grew up on these movies with my brothers during the 70s, before coming to the US from Taiwan. Over the years as I’ve gotten older and rewatching them, My favorites are the ones that were directed by Chang Cheh (no relations to me lol), and my favorite stars are Gordon Liu, Lo Meng and Lo Lieh😎
I would’ve gotten this set in a heartbeat if it also had 36th Chamber of Shaolin, One-armed Swordsman and Five Elements Ninjas, since King Boxer and The Five Venoms are my other SB favorites on this set. Btw, are you a fan of the Zatoichi and Lone Wolf & Cub series? I have the Criterion box set for both and those are really dope too!
I am most definitely a fan of BOTH Zatoichi and Lone Wolf. Those Criterion sets are still on my list. Lucky enough, 36th Chamber IS on volume two, in a brand 4K restoration. I’d grab that if I were you 😅
The Irishman was one of the titles I picked up on the last B&N sale last month, and the picture quality was dope! You should also get the Infernal Affairs Trilogy, which is the Chinese gangster epic that inspired The Departed.
Of course, I plan on getting that set soon. Seen the first films years ago, then watched The Departed in high school. Definitely wanna watch the other two films. Thanks for watching! 🙏🏾
@@dakariholder02 oh you must binge watch all 3 films together! I got lucky finding the only copy at a bigger B&N store that I passed by the week after Thanksgiving, so I grabbed it a few days before the 50% off sales ended!😎
Dakari! I’m guessing that was the B&N in union square NYC? That’s I think one of the bigger branches in NYC, as well as the one on 86th street. Were you able to visit midtown comics? Place has everything in terms of comics, figures, movies, t shirts, trading cards, game boards, etc. I highly suggest you watch Malcolm X. In terms of a film about the evolution and essence of a man there’s nothing like it. Spike really brought his A game, there’s a book Spike wrote just on the making of this film. There’s a making of documentary that was on the previous dvd release that goes into detail. I’m not sure if it’s on the criterion release, since I don’t own it yet. Keep living, and experiencing life young man 👊🏻
Thank you for watching as always, my friend. I didn’t get a chance to go to Midtown. By the time I wanted to go, they were already closing down, plus I was on tight schedule. 😂 Cannot wait to dive into these films.
Dakari! My man, finally got a job! I have the 88 films version of this. I would definitely need to watch it again because I felt it didn’t match 36 chambers or some of the other good Lau Sifu films.
Please watch it again, man. It’s definitely his most somber and serious work by far. Don’t let that throw you off though. Take my word for it, it’s fantastic.
Leeroy!!! "There’s nothing like this on HBO, SHOWTIME or CINEMAX!"-Eddie Arcadian (may be paraphrased 😄). Dakari is correct, hell the coffin array sequence of the last fight scene alone is worth the price of admission to me. But the short on Alexander Fu Sheng has been sought after by collectors like myself since it played in a Hawaiian theater in '83. I obtained a newspaper clipping of it back in the day. This bonus feature will make the ARROW version my choice when I decide to purchase it. And that will be soon, it's at the top of my Amazon cart right now "calling me man!"-Pookie (NJC)😄 On vhs the film print always looked dark and dull. Honestly I don't think I've even viewed my DVD version released by Dragon Dynasty I believe. But I'm definitely looking forward to seeing the restoration for sure! Now if I could just find RECKLESS CRICKET Shaw Bros 1979, my SB martial arts movie collection will be complete! ✌🏾😎👍🏾☯️
@@jawarakarega7534 However you wanna do it, it will certainly be my pleasure Mr. Nuff! 🤣 You know I seen bits and pieces of this but not fully till last year. I felt Gordon’s character here doesn’t necessarily have a true character arc like he does in 36 chambers. In 36 chambers, he goes in thinking of revenge, but in reality he grows up to be a man. He embraced the ideals of Shaolin, yet dedicated the art to making a chamber for the common people in order to stand up. Here, he clearly just wanted to get revenge, never really growing but learning a new skill nothing more. Again, I may have to watch it again. I adore most of Lau’s work especially Heroes of the east, Mad monkey kung fu, the list goes on. Lau is if not the greatest kung fu director of all time. He made David Chiang look good, especially in Shaolin Mantis. Appreciate the comment, and perspective as always. I seek only wisdom of the master…. You want wisdom you buy fortune cookie 🥠
@@leeroygreene85 😄😂🤣 Nice one! Nothing compares to the 1st MASTER KILLER of course. It was never his intention to duplicate the character again for THE INVINCIBLE POLE FIGHTER. So he had to expand his horizons, as well as display Gordon's acting range by making this monk the complete opposite of the monk San Te. Furthermore, this character is a hardened soldier from the outset. Who's made even harder by betrayal and the brutal massacre of his father and brothers. He must get revenge before he can then repent and become a true monk. His sole purpose for becoming one is to get revenge. So if you are going into the film with 36 CHAMBER expectations, then you will be disappointed each and every time. Just as those of us who saw the theatrical premiere of RETURN TO THE 36th CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN were very disappointed to see that Professor Liu decided to go in a completely different direction with the sequel. Not only by making it a comedy, but by not having his brother reprise the role that had made him so famous (but we were not disappointed in the training and fight sequences!). He did not want to repeat the "formula" trap that he'd been locked into for so many years under Chang Cheh's direction. Where it became difficult to differentiate one Shaolin layman film from another. No, he'd learned from the likes of Bruce Lee that each new film presented the opportunity to widen your range and broaden your horizons. I saw him say once that the only real Kung Fu films, were the ones that Bruce Lee made. What did he mean by that being that he'd made so many masterpieces at the time of that statement? I submit to you that he'd studied Bruce's films, and their evolution. Each one is very different from the other. So his too are just that. You have those that are strictly comedic like his directorial debut, SPIRITUAL BOXER, then you have the total opposite of the spectrum in 8 DIAGRAM in which there is no comedy. You have some that mix the two, though leaning heavily in one direction or the other (DIRTY HO, MAD MONKEY KUNG FU & LEGENDARY WEAPONS OF CHINA are a few examples of this). Then you have RETURN OF THE MASTER KILLER, MARTIAL CLUB & HEROES OF THE EAST which all deliver on an abundance of excellent Kung-fu action, but no one gets killed in the films. Thus promoting the true Way and spirit of the Martial Arts, like his 2nd outing, CHALLENGE OF THE MASTERS did. So in conclusion (of my novel 😄) , that is the lens through which 8 DIAGRAM should be viewed. As purposely a totally different from film experience than MASTER KILLER. Let us not forget that Fu Sheng was killed before it's completion. So the mood of the production from that that point on had to have been affected (likely negatively), to say the least. Most people say that, that is the reason why the last fight sequence is so ultra violent (aren't mostly all Kung-fu films violent?). But I beg to differ, from the opening sequence ALL of the fight scenes are violent! That tone was set even before Fu Sheng was killed. And if you know anything about the filming process, then you'll know that movie's are not shot in sequence. So the first scene shot could very well have been the last one. The fight choreography and Gordon Liu's acrobatic double (The same guy who plays Wu Tang in the opening sequence of SHAOLIN & WU TANG, and who doubled for Lo Lieh in CRAZY SHAOLIN DISCIPLES) are the highlights of the film in my opinion. So I suggest you sit back, pay attention and enjoy the film for what it's worth, a different kind of classic. We all have different tastes though. Hell I really can't get into MAD MONKEY KUNG FU or 5 DEADLY VENOMS for a multitude of reasons, but that's just me. I know they're considered Classics and I own them. So one day I intend to revisit them. Just maybe not on blu ray (unless of course it has irresistible extras like this one does!) "Poon Mei!!!"-Fu Sheng 👊🏽😎🤜🏾💥🤛😎👍
@@jawarakarega7534 I am deeply in your debt… I will have to definitely re-watch it, with a open mind as suggested. What I also appreciated about Lau sifu was his dedication in showcasing authentic kung fu in his films. Sure, there are movie fu infused but we got to see traditional hung gar, and other various Southern styles. Crazy, you can’t get into Mad monkey or especially 5 deadly venoms! I saw those in my early teens probably 12 and was deeply impressed especially with 5 deadly venoms. It’s storytelling, and noir-ish feel on top of showcasing Chang Cheh’s new talent from Taiwan: the Venom mob. I think Lo Meng (the toad, kid with the golden arm,) was from Hong Kong. I was fortunate to have met Lu Feng (the centipede,) at the urban action showcase few years ago in NYC. It was a honor to see in person one of the actors I watched religiously as a kid and to feel how humbled he was he had so many fans outside of Hong Kong. You’re definitely right about the sequels to 36 chambers particularly the first sequel. It came out of left field and how you articulate the expectations at that time. I appreciate your novels, lol and perspectives. I will report back in a few once I give 8 diagrams a re-watch. Peace, sifu 👊🏻
Yo you made this on a iPhone I can only imagine what you can do with the proper equipment I’ve been Bopping this for a month straight and it has some classics I really hope to see you grow and you have a fan here👏🏽
Cool collection man . Shaw brothers is great . I collect all Shaw brothers movies they have many different names for many movies . I wish they had collector guide for dvd
Got mine two weeks ago. Got it for a great price on eBay from a private seller. And it was in great condition! SO HAPPY to have gotten it. Can’t wait for Volume 2!
Young warrior! I’m glad you were able to get this set! I hope to get it very soon. I appreciate the in depth unboxing. If I may suggest for Vol 2: Invincible Shaolin, Deadly breaking sword, Mad monkey kung fu, My young auntie, and Kid with the golden arm.
@@dakariholder02 well sure but at this point I’ll take them on blu ray. For the most part they’ve been remastered since the early to mid 2000s by Celestial and look fine on dvd, etc. I might have heard kid with the golden arm and invincible Shaolin are rumored to be in Vol 2.
@@leeroygreene85 That’s cool. I’m only referring to new transfers because this set had brand new restorations from original negatives, and they look AMAZING. I think they can do the same with those.
