Whether you're preparing for a maths challenge, or aiming for top grades at GCSE or A-Level or have a student taking 11+ exams or are teaching online, you’ve come to the right place. A lot of my content is right here on RU-vid, but a lot more is available at the online courses website too at courses.mathsaurus.com/ - there you'll find loads of free online courses as well as details of my paid teaching. There's also a website at mathsaurus.com with lots of past papers and grade boundaries.

About me: I studied maths at Oxford University and later created this channel whilst teaching maths at two of the top private schools in London. Since leaving full time teaching I have completed a PhD in Probability and now make content for this channel and the online courses full time!

Hi Kevin, any tips on finding students to teach. I used to be an in-person maths tutor many years ago, I used to pick up students by way of word of mouth. The question is how do I find my target students online (e.g. GCSE Maths students) without them knowing me. I've never tried leafleting, do you think that might help?

Your second point makes it so clear what my error was when self studying gcse higher maths - I thought I could do everything alone using only the CGP coursebook and past papers, without seeking help from a tutor (I'm a big grown up now who was home "educated"). When the exams came this year, what was frustrating was finding lots of the harder questions too obscure and confusing, and so much of what I thought I was comfortable with ended up being utterly useless. Clearly I didn't put enough effort into problem solving :( I wonder, had I put more effort into that, I could have enjoyed it all more. Now my plans for A-level are pretty shaken...

I'm sorry it didn't go as well as you had hoped, but I'm pleased this video has helped you find some clarity. You might like to take a look at my course 'Get Ready to Start A-Level maths' (it's free for the first 3 days) which covers the transition from GSCE to A-Level including many of these harder problems.

Excellent video. Usually they say, the math shows it and then they show the math, and that's it. But for many folks, it's the intuition they get stuck on, and you addressed that very well. But the phrasing is a bit tricky, and I think you're slightly off a few times. You mention in problem 1 we don't know 'which child' we have information on. But it doesn't make sense to talk about 'which child', when you know 'at least one child is a boy'. The same applies when you know that 'at least one child is a boy born on a Tuesday'. Instead of saying 'we don't know which', one could say 'we don't have information on any specific child'. Another way to view this, is to see it as a counting operation. In a counting operation, we don't learn about any item specifically. In problem 1, we're counting the famiies with at least one boy, In problem 3, we're counting the families with at least one one boy born on a Tuesday (1 or 2 boys born on a Tuesday). But since in problem 3, it's quite unlikely that both children are born on Tuesday, it's as if you almost learned about a specific child. This brings the answer close to 1/2.

Hi Kevin, how do you get paid? Do the students do a bank transfer for each lesson/month/term or is there some other way?
@Mathsaurus
@Mathsaurus 2 месяца назад
Yes it varies, mostly these day I use booking software that handles this, takes payment and sends Zoom links etc (Acuity scheduling) but invoicing in the traditional way with bank transfers etc. also works well.

@@Mathsaurus And how much do you think I would need to set up the minimum requirements for such a desk set-up. I used to do in-person tutoring but public transport wasted a lot of time. Do you think £500 could buy the essentials for online tutoring?
@Mathsaurus
@Mathsaurus Месяц назад
@@I.M2008 Yes (assuming you already have some sort of pc or laptop) that's more than enough. Start basic, upgrade once you have some students. BitPaper + a basic £50 writing tablet is really all you need to start - I'd go for a decent webcam/mic as the next upgrade - probably the mic more than the camera, bad sound is very annoying!

Big fan, and I must say your channel is very unique and I love it, you have really helped in learning how to learn. also every day I train for UKMT intermediate math challenge but I see no improvement. Also THANK YOU SO MCUH FOR THE FREE COURSES! You could do livestreams for the big group idea I do have a slight thing to ask:I have used courses, learnt tricks and do questions without looking at answers till I get or look at solution and use method to solve similar equations to improve but see none, do you have any advice. I can only ever get gold and none of the other competitions
@Mathsaurus
@Mathsaurus 2 месяца назад
Thanks! I'd say firstly that gold is a great result and so probably you have been improving - Gold in Intermediate is an improvement from Gold in Junior for example, so you have made progress! If you weren't at that level and really not getting things I'd suggest going back to lower levels as problems in maths are as often about not having fully understood what's gone before. Otherwise to get to really top scores is very tough - but you need to analyse what's going wrong - is it not paying attention and losing marks early on? Is it not having time to think about the later questions? Is it just not being able to do the harder ones. As you can imagine, each of these would have different solutions! The main thing is to enjoy the maths and to keep trying interesting problems though - there are very few real world problems that you need to solve in an hour after all!

I think its E. We can write the information like this Lets say the three digit number is abc we can write it as 100a+10b+c-297= 100c+10b+a as its reverse.-c and 10b from both sides.100a-297=99c+a. minus a from both sides to get 99a-297=99c.99*3 is 297 so a and c have to have a difference of 3.So some possibilities are 4,1 5,2 6,3 7,4 8,5 9,6 which is 6 possibilities and b could any number from 0-9 which is 10 possibilities so the amount of three digit numbers which are reversed when subtracted by 297 is 6*10 = 60 which is E,this proof may not be right so im not too sure.
