There is a learning curve when raising Cornish Cross. I had to buy larger cones and pull on the head a little bit to do the necessary business. I lost a few while learning but next time it will go much better.
There definitely is! We are trying McMurray's Big Red Broilers this year instead. So far we haven't lost any and they seem like much healthier and heartier birds that fit our farm a bit better.
Good video! I have a 674D IH that I am needing to change out the tie rods on. Did not realize that two of them were that long. I have done lots of cars and trucks, and they generally have an adjustment sleeve that the tie rod ends just thread into. Now I need to see which part number I need for my 1973 model because there seems to be several.
I have never tried refrigerating the dough, but I believe it should work. What you might want to do is leave the rising agent out, the baking soda and powder, and mix everything together until it just starts to come together. Refrigerate overnight (you will get all the benefits of a longer fermentation) and add those in the morning, cut your biscuits, and bake. If you try it, let me know how it goes!

I'd have to go back and look at dates for specifics, but they were right around the 9-week mark. Raised in chicken tractors with limited grain fed once a day and moved to fresh grass daily in the mornings.
Use road cones modified to fit. Perfect hug cones and 1/3 the price of th ed stainless steel units. Plus a saw horse and 5 mount well to a 6' 2x4. Don't make it so hard on yourself. Simple knife and your done in 3 seconds.
Dude....Stop....just stop! Your method of killing the birds is ludicrous! You need to do this right. Your birds are suffering needlessly! #1. Use the hugging cone. #2. Pull the head thru the small opening #3. Take a very sharp knife and cut the carotid Vein on both sides of the neck. #4. Wait until the bird bleeds out. Use the heart as a blood pump to completely drain all blood until the bird stops moving, it is now clinically dead! #5. Take the limp bird and dip into the scalding pot. A little Dawn really helps. #7. Place in the plucker. #8. Cut off head, then process normally. You will not have that bloody mess, traumatized kids, flies, that iron content smell and messy clothing. This is not a guillotine method. Do this and do it right, not your way. Have respect for the birds!
Well said and my practice as well. Innovate, communicate, study and learn. This is by far the best breed that I've raised for culling and butchering myself. Please, learn from your mistakes and get a great education. Thank you for your video efforts as well. You have a lovely and very supportive little family. You are blessed, at a minimum!
Using the cone is our preferred method too. It is a much simpler, cleaner, and humane way absolutely. However, these birds were too large and we were not able to pull their heads through to do the job. At the end of the day they had to be processed, we had to use what we had and get the job done.
Wonderful to see the braces! You might want to add a couple to each of the two center beams, on the side of the lean. Where did you get your splitting wedges? I've been looking for some. Tapping along the split line with a ten pound sledge hammer will help it to split, right were you want it too. Lee
a friend let us borrow the wedges! Another fried had a twenty pound slege (might be a little heavy but we will see) he was going to let us use next time he is in town.
I'm as nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs, as I watch you work under that barn. Your cribbage should be 100% level, with a wide base. At least on camera, they all look to be leaning. Wind load is a powerful force. It's pushing on the barn all the time. It would be great to add some 45 degree posts to the seal plates on the east side at least. Set posts in the ground, as deep as you can get them, tamp them as tight as possible, then put the 45 degree leaner against it. Then, lag the other end to the barn, with a flat kicker board lagged above where it joins to the barn, to keep it from slipping up the barn. You desperately need more cribbage under the barn. Lee
Talk to every friend you know and round up as many railroad ties or old square beams and put at least 6 cribbing towers under barn, where the best structural support is. Then, at the very top of the cribbing use 2x6's which you've cut to a wedge shape and with a sledge hammer, drive the two wedges together, making the cribbing stack tight. You are not trying to raise the barn, but hold it where it is. DO NOT DO ANY MORE WORK on beam or wall repair until you have done this. Working under the barn is not safe until you put the cribbing in. My barn (40x70 with 11ft high basement/ground floor) was almost as bad as yours, and it has all been fixed. You see, the problem is, your barn has already moved. Somewhere on that back wall is a spot that is carrying the force load, which holds it in place. If you relieve that point, the barn will slid off the wall and collapse to the floor. If you're under it - you're dead! Also, on the posts you've straightened, either dig a post hole and set a post or drive one in, about 2 to 3 feet away and then attach a good sturdy 2x6 or 2x8 to the beam and the post. That will help prevent your post from slipping off the pier. Like you; when we started farming, we had nothing and no equipment to do anything with. There are friends and neighbors who are willing to help or loan/donate some of the things you need to safely fix your barn. Your barn floor isn't log beams, so wherever you put the cribbing towers, add x-bracing to the old floor joists directly above the tower, so the joists don't move under load. I raise 200 a year getting ready to butcher our last 50 on December 11 and out of 200 I've maybe lost 4. By the size of yours they are over fed which causes heart attacks. Our average 4.5 to 5 lbs. I have mine (50) at a time in a 10 x 12 she'd. I feed Joel Salatin feed from his book ( pastured poultry profits) since I switched to his feed our chickens have did great. You don't need alot of area to do this. I raise 90 percent of my food on less than 1/2 acres. 3 flocks of layers and building a new barn for a 4 the flock, we have a 6x8 hoop style tractor for 5 turkey and I have a 8x16 platform for 3 pigs which we just butchered one yesterday. And we just started meat rabbits for more protein. Good luck.
We did ration feed to prevent heart problems which as far as I can tell worked. We only lost birds to predators and weather. In a shed with more shelter definitely seems like a great way to raise these birds. Moving forward we will stick with dual-purpose birds that are hardier, can forage more, and in our opinion taste better. Sounds like you are getting the most out of your land! We raised American guinea x kune kune hogs over the last year and a half and loved them!

I was wondering if your strainer attachment is still holding up? After watching your video, I was excited about getting one of these, but I noticed that the ratings are very poor because many have reported that it breaks easily (particularly, the strainer cone that the auger slips into).
Mine has made it through 4 years of applesauce and 2 seasons of tomato sauce with no problems. We bought most of our KitchenAid attachments from Facebook Marketplace, so I bought it used.
So you did everything wrong and blamed it on the birds. Let me say I have tried different types and the CC has been by far the easiest to raise. Done in 6 to 7 weeks. Other breeds died in the heat wave but mine survived. Sounds like you don't have a clue what you're doing. So yes please stop raising them. Try reading a manual next time. Not at all happy with these birds. Poor critters. All started out as healthy looking chicks from Tractor Supply, to put under a broody hen. These were the very last chicks they had for sale. After successful hatching, we put hen and chicks out on mixed grass area with safe locking night shelter. As they grew with plenty of food and extras, they feathered out slowly and sparsely. They started growing faster and their feet, knees, and legs got huge for young chicks. They stated to want to sit down to rest while they ate. Two became deformed and eventually died , one got taken and I have two hens left that are huge and have to waddle to walk. Genetically Engineered?? Deformed, but very heavy birds. I guess to keep them from breaking their own legs trying to get around you had better harvest them early. Never again. Poor critters.
They are specifically bred to mature quickly as meat chickens. I rationed their feed to help slow their growth. They definitely grow quickly! After raising two kinds of meat chickens we decided we prefer the slower growing ones for a number of reasons
I did 29/31 CC last summer and it went extremely well. I raised them from end of July to 2nd week of September. 3&1/2 weeks they were in 4x8 trailer for a brooder until feathered out enough to be out on grass. Then I had them on grass in a 10’x10’ dog kennel that I moved every day til 2nd or 3rd week of September when we processed them. This year I am getting them around September 19 and I’m a little nervous about it due to cooler temps. I want to do the same thing as last year but I am facing the challenges of cooler temps and I hope to not lose a bunch due to the cooler weather. Processing date is around end of October first week of November sometime. How did you guys lose birds due to weather?
We struggled with rain storms that brought the temps down. They couldn't handle the wet and "cold" (70 degrees or so). They just didn't have enough feathers to stay dry and warm in our set up. Depending on where you live it could be totally fine! I would make sure that they have a good shelter/wind block and consider keeping a heat lamp in with them if you are unsure about the temperature.
@@steigerfamilyfarms thanks for reply. I just got the chicks last Tuesday. All 36 are in a 4x8 trailer in an “enclosed” box with the heat lamp on them 24/7. It’s been cold at night here(40-44F). Indiana PA Area. Supposed to go back to mild temps later this week. 55 night and 69 daytime highs. Gonna move them out to pasture in about 2-3 weeks once fully feathered. Hopefully everything goes well. So far so good.
There’s a reason they are the most popular breed of meat chicken. I’d encourage you to learn how to better raise cc meat birds. Once you learn the tricks to raising them they do great.
They are definitely the largest bang for your buck. With our current set up we won't be raising them again next summer. If we get them again a few years down the line we will certainly be doing it differently.
