I found a couple of Namisu pens for cheap on ebay and I really like them. They are the Nova and the Orion in the same stonewash titanium finish. While I like the design and shape, those threads near the nibs are a magnet for ink and definitely the most inconvenient part of the pen. I do not recommend using the Orion with a converter and an ink better simply because it is time consuming to clean and much ink is wasted.
Great videos as usual! How does it compare to LEONARDO MZ? Other than having a different filling mechanism, i wonder who has a better nib, balance and writing experience. I'm thinking of getting either one. Which one do you prefer, Thanks.
I immediately thought this blue pen was influenced by the scene in the movie Dune part two when Jessica takes the water of life, you see the blue swirling through her blood.
My favorite name story is how the word for fabric used to make blue jeans entered the English language. In the 19th century a new, tough-wearing cotton fabric became available in the US. This fabric became very popular in the Western US amongst various groups who needed clothing that could stand up to a hard day's work. Originating from the French city of Nîmes, every crate of this fabric was marked "de Nîmes". That was of course shorted and the pronunciation change to give us the modern denim.
Haha, that team story was hilarious! I have a Quaker parrot, aka Monk parakeets. Quakers got their name because of the gray on the front of their necks that looks like an old-fashioned Quaker bib.
Hi David. You are always quite accurate in your descriptions. Perhaps the newer models have piston activation via the knob, but mine has a blind cap covering the piston knob. Have a grand time in DC!
My favorite naming story is in William Least Heat-Moon's book Blue Highways, when he visits a tiny town called Nameless, Tennessee. When he asks one of the handful of locals how it got it, the story they told was that the community had a post office, but it wasn't called anything. The USPS said they would have to stop delivery unless the town had a name that people could actually address letters to, and when they people who lived there met to talk about names one guy stood up and said, "This is a nameless place if I've ever seen one, so let's leave it that way." Apparently he didn't like the mail he got and was fine with them cutting the town off--but everyone else liked it and adopted it as the town name.
Great review. I picked one up at the DC pen show last year with a medium nib. Beautiful pen and writes really nice. Keep the great reviews coming! Sorry I won’t be at this year’s show but enjoyed your seminar last year.
Hi love your videos. I was wondering if lamy 2000 is really the best 1st "proper" aka gold nib fountain pen to get? Especially on Amazon it's far lower than it's msrp. Or if there is something else that you would rec to a sort of newbie
The 2k is good, but a bit of a unique nib. You might also take a look at things like the Pilot Falcon, or Pilot Vanishing Point. Hart to go wrong with any of those three.
There is really no need to get a gold nib. Plenty of modern steel nibs are just as flexible, durable, and "bouncy" as many gold nibs, and are far more affordable. The M2K is a terrific pen, its Macrolon construction, style, and operation are classic, but hardly necessary. As a newbie, best suggestion is get what appeals to you, don't spend more than you can afford, avoid destroying pens, and ignore most of what anybody tells you, especially anything I tell you.
Thank you for your truthful, as kind as you could be, review. I love the concept and wish they could have pulled this off for those who may have needed a pen like this. I mix my inks before I ever put them into my converter so I can be at peace knowing that I don't need to buy a pen that does it for me. You were awesome!
Thanks for the comparison! I am looking at getting a Lamy 2000 and happened to run across the Jinhao. I was considering getting the Jinhao because I can get it in green but mostly to see if I like the form factor before I spend the money on the Lamy. I figure if I like it and get the Lamy too then the Jinhao may be a good knock around pen for when I don't want to risk damage or loss of the Lamy. Anyway, we run into the same conflicts in the knife edc world with Chinese companies either making complete forgeries of knives, including the branding, or at least taking some of the primary design cues from other companies. Thanks again!
Bought the black version last month, it’s a big pen for my relatively small hands. But it’s not that heavy. Really love the feel of the pen. Writes very well. Probably my first and last namiki fountain pen cuz the maki e models are too expensive. My wallet is crying due to my purchase😂
Thanks for the review. I like the look but it does seem short for me. I was thinking of this for taking to the office, as I WFH a lot, but didn't want to carry my larger laban on office days.
Thanks for the video! It was very informative and easy to watch. I have been looking for the Via Lattea 😢 If anyone sees this and decides to let theirs go, please let me know!
Great review. Did anyone else have to deal with two extremely long ads during the video? There are currently two ads that are extremely long so get your remote control handy to skip over them. Otherwise you could forget what David said between ads. Wish RU-vid would limit the length of ads.
I also appreciate the Leonardo pens. This edition seems like a fine addition to the line. I’ve started collecting brass pen holders. I think the crab belongs in the menagerie. The eyes are great. Do they seem to follow you as you move about? Is the knife in the CUTtle fish a pun?
Drool 🤤 Beautiful resin by Bob Dupras... (But I have spent too much on the hobby in the past month, so I need to wait a bit before getting another pen.)
My first thought was, "Wow, that kind of reminds me of about half of the supplies at my school in the early- to mid-90s." And I 100% mean that as a compliment.
@sunnyoak Thanks. While these have been sold out for quite some time, there are still some of the Visconti Voyager Del Mar models available on my site which use a very similar resin. A but at a higher price point, though.
You have THE BEST pen reviews David. No one even in the prime pen review days comes close. Always a pleasure seeing your reviews and getting your take. Thank you!
In what sort of world is a couple of pieces of plastic with a few bits of metal attached that can perform only a single function that less than 1% of the world's population performs on a regular basis considered a "starter" item at a cost of $200????? Must be the opposite of a divine comedy! Seriously, as a Catholic who loves fountain pens (and who hopes for Purgatory since my much better half assures me that I am destined for lower regions), I would love to have the Purgatory inspired pen. However, inasmuch as that model will almost certainly have an extremely limited appeal, I can easily wait until the price drops, as it almost certainly will.
@wlbrockman As I mentioned in the review, I said this was in the general entry point range for this specific brand. I did not categorize it as a "starter" pen. Every brand will have varying entry points. The one for Montblanc is higher than the one for Pilot.
@@FigbootonPens Sorry, David. Seems I struck a nerve in my attempt to be facetious. I do understand the distinction between starter and entry level but failed to apply that understanding in my haste to share my wit. Nevertheless, that Visconti regards this as an entry level price still strikes me as, perhaps, a bit out of touch? Ditto Montblanc. No issue with Pilot. While I preferred the Knight to the Metro, both strike me as excellent entry level pens. In fact, it was a Knight that convinced me to try a next level pen. I did buy an earlier Visconti entry level offering--a Breeze--and thought it was a decent pen, but overpriced at $100. Seems the market agrees because those models are now available on eBay for as little as $40 new. Just gotta wonder about Visconti's marketing department.
On my V126, the nib is perfectly lined out against the clip. It's so precise, that I hardly believe it's accidental. Maybe they have become better in that respect? And agreed otherwise; mine is a great writer as well.
Very much on my radar as a brand - love the concept, the well limned connection to Bologna, yadi yada - but the step-down, which is even more pronounced on the somewhat cheaper, Ranga-like Piuma, and the boringly straight grip section that follows on all of their models make it had to justify the outlay of near US$ 700, which means that my hunt for a Feel or a La Dotta will be conducted on the secondary market. For the record, which in no way impugns your good taste, David, since the pen was loaned from Appelboom, I thoroughly detest this particular, varicose-y resin.
