I raise sheep in Alberta Canada. I run approximately 300 Rideau Arcott ewes, and lamb from January-March. I grow the majority of my feed, and run most farm operations alone. My sheep are on pasture in the summer, and confined in the winter.
I'm making videos of what I do day to day. I hope you enjoy.
I think the videos are great and you are doing a great job. Thank you for sharing your story with us. I just subscribed to your channel and will go back and watch all the previous videos.
New subscriber here! I found your vlog and I think you’re doing a great job with the sheep, seems like you’re out in the barn from daylight til dark, tough job I bet! Also, your vlogs are longer than most, which is great! 😊
Doing great, I'll be tuning in. Can't wait for some good summer grazing videos as well. I'm down in the states so summer is full swing. I'd like to see a few videos on the numbers and paperwork as well. Lambing rates, amount of ewes bred, feed costs, etc. We are in the process of starting up a rideau confinement operation we are 100% hair pasture based right now.
Thanks for the comment Tyde. Not sure how in depth I want to get on numbers in the future, still getting used to seeing my face on the internet. I am filming several months behind, which is by choice. Confinement Rideau is work, plain and simple. Thankful I don't do it that way. I live very close to the largest packer in western canada, and our prices in Canada are very strong. This week finished lambs are around $350/hd (expect this to crash shortly due to season). Roughly for this lambing there were 3 groups. 120/120/40 for 280 total +/-. I lambed about 260, but 25 of those that didn't lamb were open for 2 years in a row so they were just bad sheep. I ended up with about 440 live, marketable lambs. Keeping about 100 back for now, trying to rebuild with some better genetics. Thanks for tuning in, I really appreciate it. Any other questions ask away.
I realize you are way past lambing but...for next time....Letting ewes run out of water is the fastest way to decrease milk production. Better to install tank float valves in your stock tanks and gravity feed. Then you only have to ensure the water in your main tank is higher than the float valve. Dare Tank-O-Matic Float Valves work great. You can dose a ewe with oxytocin several days in a row to boost milk production in low production ewes when they've just lambed. Why don't you put your poorly outdoor lamb in with your weaned lambs inside? That fast forward lambing was priceless. Last bit of advice: barn cameras. Bet your glad the grass is up now!
Weasel hunting, baler reviews, lamb health, feed quality assessment! What more could you ask for in 9.25 minutes of RU-vid?! Well done, RJ Sheep Farms😊!
hi bro i hope you are doing well i think your channel is complete 4k hr watch time that is required for monetization but your channel have not 1000 subscriber that is need for monetization i will help you to get 1k+ subscriber and you get your channel monetized and you start earn too soon because your view are coming and you are not earn because of subscriber
The assimilation part Makes me think of the moment the airline opens up the gate to let people on the plane. Goes from 0 to mayhem in an instant. It be cool to know the actual temperature when you say "its a bit warmer out today"
Great videos. I came across your channel recently, like all the videos, can’t wait to see more. I am also a sheep farmer in Alberta and always nice to see other peoples operations and sketchy panels while dealing with with wonderful sheep and their last minute ‘make a break for it’
Just found your channel. Great content. Looking forward to seeing more videos. Have you checked out a lac-tek milk machine? Quarter of the cost of the really expensive one. Simple construction. Easy to repair yourself should anything go wrong. I’ve been using one for several years and have had up to 50 lambs on at a time in a setup very similar to yours. The machine more than paid for itself the first year.
