It’s so cool to hear about Gene’s transition into a new medium of client work and how this camera has given him a new tool in his toolbox. I would love to see a mini docu series behind the scenes of how a hospitality shoot with Gene goes. I don’t know if it’s too early for something like that but Gene… if you’re reading this… DO IT!!!
Thank you so much for making a video about Gene’s journey so far. Currently in a similar season like Gene but still in its infancy, so any feedback from him was greatly informative!
Gene, I know you’re a big fan of the Pentax 645N. There’s a P645 to GFX adapter to let you use glass from your 645N on the GFX. I use the GFX 50R and the adapted Pentax glass looks incredible on it!
I got the chance to play with an R5ii demo last weekend, and I will say, it is definitely an upgrade to the R5, "spec wise" it seems underwhelming, but if you get one in yopur hands and you compare to an original they are two very different cameras! That being said, I am an R5 shooter, and did preorder the R5 II
I'm a stills guy...couldn't care less about video...shoot with the R5 mark1...trying to justify upgrading to the mark 2 or even the R1...but the mark 1 is such a great camera...for stills
As an OG R6 shooter I definetley pre-ordered the R5 MK II, but after my logical brain caught up, I canceled it and I grabbed a refurbished R5 from Canon USA at $2299.
Wont say for R1 but R5 MK 2 is definitely an improvement needed. Pre-capture, Good viewfinder, 30 FPS, dual photo+video capture, 240 FPS in 2K, More video codecs, CLog2, Digic accelerator, Auto focus beating both Nikon and Sony, better heat dissipation, Switch for Photo to Video, Sound in 120 FPS video, Full HDMI slot. Except for dual CFExpress card slot everything R5 users wanted is given. I am ready to upgrade.
In terms of video, the R5ii was a flop, other than Clog2. With No official dual (at least) native ISO, it's not worth it. I know Canon wants to keep pro photo and pro video separate, but so many people do both. But hey, at least they have a full size HDMI finally!
I was about to preorder the C400, but the R5 Mark II seems like a great stepping stone for my personal/professional needs (filmmaking / a little bit of photo). I held off on buying the original R5 waiting for a R5 Mark II or C400. I agree that if I already had the R5, I probably would just go straight for the C400. The eventual goal will be to have the C400 as the A Cam, R5 Mark II as the B, & the Canon R6 Mark II (current camera) as the C Cam. Love these conversations as it helps inform purchasing decisions!
These last few episodes targeted towards young creatives and showing the ropes have been immensely insightful and encouraging. I am a 23 y/o living in Charlotte, got married and moved here last year and started working construction to pay the bills, but wanting to build a photography business on the side! Second shooting my first wedding next month, but this podcast has been so so helpful. Eric, Steven, Gene, Braxton, Cyrus… thank you guys 🤙
Hey boys, I'm currently a photo major at the local tech school in Madison, and for us it's an associates in Business Arts. Yeah, they teach what the aperature is and what makes a photo objectively good, but they also teach how to market yourself and build your brand as a photographer as well (they also got rid of their dark room over 10 years ago).
Hey y'all, 23 right now doing nursing but just about every second free I have is being out with my camera. I don't think I'll ever make a business out of it just because it's not what I want from it right now, but this episode did resonate. Thank you again
Tons of reasons to use a crop mode, if you are using crop lenses for one, but if you are using full frame and shooting 4k downscale, you can punch in and still record 4k with more reach , very useful.
Afaik Covid really impacted Canon's ability to release any new camera tech in a semi normal cycle for their cinema cameras. So it's very likely that all the rumors we heard back then for c200 mark II's, and C700s etc etc, had to be shelved because Canon probably couldn't actually get the cameras built with the supply chain issues. So I kinda feel the C400 is really another generation after whatever would have come earlier.
Love that you chatted about reading instead of scrolling and watching TV at points of the day! I’ve been doing the same thing and have seen a shift in my overall productivity and mental health. Any good mystery / thriller books you’ve read recently that you can recommend? I love that genre too!
Thank you for answering my question! Loved this episode/video got a lot of great insight and advice! Met both of you on a film photowalk back in 2023! 48:13
Oh YES! I’m actually organizing a video about this exact topic right now - coming out on my personal channel soon :) But! I’ll tease at least one for now. I’m a huge Knives Out fan and love mystery novels that have a similar feeling. The author Benjamin Stevenson wrote a book called “Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone” (wild title, I know haha), but it’s an excellent mystery/comedy that has loads of that “Knives Out” energy!! One of my favorites of the year so far!
@@StevenSchultz heck yeah! I’ll be looking out for that video. Mystery is right up my alley so I’ll definitely check it out. Thanks for the reply, love your work and the podcast! Cheers
SHOUT OUT ZACK! I jumped full time WAY too early (2.5 years out of college, 6 months of savings), and I knew I had the skills to make this video business work, but I feel like it has been a stressful hindrance to my business. My expenses are super low, so I've been able to make it work with editing jobs and other filming gigs, and temp work, but it's been a dang BEAR trying to grow this thing, since I'm not great at the business generation side.
FIRST! I just started the podcast, but I want to say I’m grateful for this podcast. Always great to listen to y’all even though I do more of the marketing side of things, I love staying up to date on what creatives are doing. Much love from Fresno California, you guys are always welcome here for your Yosemite trips! - Alex
Aw man, thank you so much, Alex! It means so much to hear that! So, so glad you're enjoying the show. We really appreciate you listening along to all of our antics, haha! Gotta get back out to Yosemite soon!!
Love the quote clarification. I've definitely found over the years that clients could easily find someone more talented than me in anyone of my verticals but, for the sake of simplicity, they would rather work with someone who can walk you through the entire process - brand, messaging, web, creative, photo + video. Keep up the good work fellas.
You hit the spot about this camera at weddings, it might not be necessary for them, but I also think that even if you work at events/weddings aiming to be prepared to tackle more demanding jobs, as I am sure every wedding filmmaker has faced, its important. I do documentary work at weddings and on independent projects. This C400 could easily eat every documentary work you throw at it.
