They also give gifts and sweets to each other. Origin Of Ugadi Ugadi, also known as Yugadi. It is a New Year’s Day for the South Indian People. It is famous in several South Indian states, including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and parts of Tamil Nadu. The origin of Ugadi is from the Hindu scriptures and mythology. The word “Ugadi” originates from the Sanskrit words “yuga” meaning era and “adi” meaning beginning. Hence, it symbolises the commencement of a new era or new cycle of a new time or new year. According to Hindu beliefs, Ugadi is a day when Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe, starts the process of creation. It is believed that Lord Brahma created the world on this auspicious day. Another Hindu mythology says that on this day, another legend gets the victory and returns to Ayodhya. It is believed that on this day, Lord Rama won the battle over the demon king Ravana, as narrated in the epic Ramayana and returned to Ayodhya. It is also a day to mark the beginning of a new era of peace and prosperity.
