In the wake of planned neo-Nazi marches in Skokie in the late 1970s, Chicagoland Holocaust Survivors joined together to form the Holocaust Memorial Foundation of Illinois. They purchased a small Skokie storefront and made it available to the public, focusing on combating hate with education. The 65,000-square-foot Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center that opened in 2009 is a culmination of 30 years of hard work by the Survivor community.
Illinois Holocaust Museum not only honors the memory of the millions who were murdered during the Holocaust, but salutes the courage and resilience of Survivors. They are the people who rebuilt their lives and awoke the conscience of humanity, working tirelessly to tell their stories, so that none of us ever forget. It is for them that we carry out our founding principle: Remember the Past, Transform the Future.
I’ve listened to more than half of Geiringer’s lecture but won’t listen to the rest. Twice I’ve heard him equate the word partisans with terrorists. If he’s slyly suggesting that today’s Islamic terrorists are no worse than the anti-Nazi partisans of WWII then he can take a hike. I also don’t like his casual and conversational tone.

My son just went here, at first he was like I don't want to go to school today because we have to go to some Holocaust museum.(Some Holocaust museum.) Just his tone shook me. I met a survivor back in the 80s while I was in high school. We were not told what the assembly was for just that it was mandatory. We were introduced to her as Mrs Shapiro, such a lovely woman. She told us over the next 3 hours, her story and let me tell you, she was and will always be the most powerful person I have ever met. She told us about her life before, during, and after the occupation by Nazis. The changes she went through, the hate and pain of physical abuse, and the suffering of losses of her whole family and friends she watched die. For my son who does not have a prejudice in his body to balk at going to this place of reverence, for the way he said the bus would be so uncomfortable. I teared up and told him that he had to go and to think about the discomfort of the ones who were treated like cattle and forced into cages. Medical torture, work, sickness. " Your discomfort is insignificant to those who were forced. Then I told him to remember them and understand. I was so mad, hurt, shocked, saddened by how he responded at first but now he knows, he came home and was in tears then he told me he understood my reaction. All our youth need to make this small trek so they can know who they need to remember and fight, believe me it will teach them.

My history Professor in early 1970s was a Holocaust survivor. Incredibly interesting lady. She would say over and over "Pay attention! Listen to what your government is saying and dong! Read their policies! PAY ATTENTION!" Maybe that's why some o this administration worries me, setting up "Disinformation Bureau", defund police, politicizing the DOJ and IRS and scariest of all the military! General Milley boasted his military would drag Trump from office and after Biden was inaugurated boasted that HE made that happen, not voters, he SAVED America. That's a disturbing statement. I remember reading President Eisenhower' "Military Individual Complex" speech a warning. The most dangerous combination to our country is a politicized military. Milley crossed that line deciding to work with Pelosi. Very worrying because if you read Milley's bio, he was in charge of Afghanistan withdrawal and strangely demanded Afghanistan military bases remain intact with billions in weaponry left behind! Who occupied those bases immediately CHINA! Who was Milley in contact with during the election? China! There's so much more about this guy and no-one is paying attention! He won't let go of power now, too entrenched, involved heavily in the Ukraine war and now stockpiling weapons in Taiwan, China. Not many are learning from past history. Some of the hatred toward Republicans from Democrats is shocking. How far will this intense political hatred go? I'm a Vietnam veteran and I have young nurses and home healthcare and none really know anything about Vietnam war! I think they're most shocked because I'm female there were very few of us then. I'm just surprised how little they know History! American History. I just wish people would PAY ATTENTION! Read government orders and policies! I'm too old to be too concerned I won't be here I just hope the pendulum in government centers itself soon and stop swinging too far left or right. and that our vote actually matters and isn't controlled by someone like General Milley and his powerful military machine.
