@@stevenhicks815 Hi Steve. I wrap the chain around the tree and bolt it. About 5 years ago I moved the bolts because the tree grew and I didn’t want to kill the tree top. I probably need to do that again. The chain will girdle the tree if you let it.
@@marshmellow3110 Thank you, its been a work in progress over nearly 30 years but I think I got it working as best as I can now. It catches a lot of pigs.
@@brushywillie6055 I have a lease in Woodville MS and an Island in the marsh in LA just off Vermilion Bay. They are out of control at both spots. We kill over 100 in the marsh every year and it doesn’t even put a dent in them. Caught 15 in a small trap last year in MS and that was only the last month of the season. Just set it today. Had 12 there yesterday. See what tomorrow brings. I personally love that they are there. My freezer is always overflowing.
@@marshmellow3110 They definitely are good eating in my opinion and fun to hunt also. They just do so much damage to my creeks and bottoms. I dont think you can ever trap them out completely when your on a large drainage because more sounders just move in and replace the ones you just rid of. It sounds like you have a handle on that though. If you have any questions I can help with just let me know. I have videos of a big double guillotine door coral trap that can hold and catch a lot more pigs but it was a lot more expensive to build.
@@brushywillie6055 I’m definitely going to change up an old pen trap that is similar to yours in MS. In the marsh we hunt them from an airboat w buckshot. It doesn’t get any better. I shot a sow last year on a nest with 7 30 or so pounders w her. When I cleaned her she had 11 babies in her that were about to be born. Just gives an idea to how fast they are reproducing
It’s a war on hogs, indeed. In Spain where I live they come up to my door, rooting about, destroy garden patches and root up watering systems. Your trap looks good, I've got to make me a crossbow to kill them in the trap, though. As I type this a gun's gone off down below, someone's hunting, braver than me.
Your welcome, its definitely time tested. Key is to cover the corners so they dont stack up and climb out and use hog panel not cow panels so all the little ones dont escape. Been there done that!
@@cliftonfreeman5481 Well let me know if there is anything I can help with or if you have any questions I didn’t cover. This trigger mechanism is key to the success. You could use a guillotine type door and I have a trap with those as well and they work fine and may be easier haul off the pigs if you load them live to sale like I do.
Haha, took me a minute to figure out what you were talking about. Good news is there are enough pigs out there for all the R’s and D’s and then some. I say we just do our thing and hopefully they leave us alone so we can do ours. Thank for watching brother!!
Man we have about 15-30 of them on our ranch, we keep setting the traps with corn but only the turkeys go by, no hog tracks. Do you know of any good bait that the turkeys won’t eat?
Soar some corn and use that. They can smell it very far away and not much else will eat it. You can also dig a hole and bury the corn. It will sour and the hogs will dig it up. Good luck!
@@Bryan-il1vuNo Bryan, $83 for the whole hog. Hogs his size sale for $ 0.50/lbs. Bigger hogs go for more per pound and smaller go for less per pound. The little pigs say below 40 lbs dont earn you anything.
@@brushywillie6055 i am searching online wild hog meat very expensive over $10 per lbs why the whole big wild pig like that only $85 that is a rip off i can't believe it , why it is so cheap ?
Nice, and I'd say you've got your moneys worth for a 20-year trap! Good going, sir. I just caught my first hog this morning - a big boar. Question: Do you eat any of the big boars? I was told the meat is very musky and not fit to eat.
I have eaten them but usually I sale them to a wild hog buyer/processor. Those big boars are worth more than any other hog to the folks overseas so somebody likes eating them. All the wild hog meat I sale is used for dog food or shipped overseas. They dont allow it to be sold for consumption here in the US which is a shame. Its 100% organic!
@@brushywillie6055 That is a shame. I was watching "Wild Hog Fever" on RU-vid, and the hogs they shoot are sold at local restaurants. That makes better since to me - stay local.
Having the tripwire ends hooked over the exposed end of the pull bolt, above the eyelets instead of between them, might work with less chance of the pin somehow jamming and staggering the gate drops. If citters like coons are a risk of knocking the ends up & off triggering it, they could be protected with a couple of nails etc immediately above.
Hi John, thanks for the suggestion. I think your idea would definitely work also with some adjustments to my set up on this trap. Possibly a longer eyebolt/trigger pin would support the weight of both doors? I haven’t had any issues with my current set up yet but always open to new ideas! Thanks again
Yes, he sales them to processing plants that sip the meat overseas where it is a delicacy. Unfortunately our government wont allow it to be sold here at home as cheap pork probably due to lobbyists for big commercial pork producers like Tyson?
After watching your trap setup and watching many others, I decided to go with your design. Used 4 of those 20' panels instead of 8 (panels are crazy high) but still a good bit of room in the trap. Finally got the trip wire figured out and set up, you are right about one thing, hogs will get into that cable from the trap door if it hangs to low. Just set it this past week and caught 18 hogs, plenty more to trap here in central Texas, I'm butt deep in them. Just wanted to stop by and let you know how it worked, have a good day now.
That’s awesome! Thanks for the feedback. If you have a way to haul them to a buyer the price is as high as it has ever been right now and they can be a decent source of extra income if you stay after them here in Texas. There are licensed buyers all over Texas.
@@brushywillie6055 Your right about the buyers, I've got a few close to me just don't have a way to get them there. Just had to give this load of hogs away. The few used trailers I've looked at are a bit pricey for the shape they're in, can't justify a new one so I'll keep looking till something comes up. You have a good day now.
Thank you, Brushy Willie, for providing these clips that we don't get to see (as often) What a fine-looking bunch of youngsters and bear 901 at the end (shoulder patch) I loved the bear at 2:50 mark sniffing their way into the lake...Familiar friend? Wave of salmon? Twinkie crumb? Let's hope not.
The videos range from mid June thru the end of August 2022. You can definitely tell the videos from after the salmon arrived verses before based solely on belly size!
what is the solar panel for ? how does the feeder work???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
The solar panel charges a 12 volt battery that operates the feeder motor. There is a preset timer in the feeder mechanism that is wired to the motor. The timer allows you to set the time of day and the length of feeding time that you would like to feed. You fill the barrel with the feed (I use corn) gravity feeds the corn down onto the spinner plate that is attached to the feeder motor. Hope that helps!
Have any coons or squirrels tried climbing the trees, going across the chain to the feeder, dropping to it, and reaching down from the top to get at the corn at the bottom?
Squirrels do but no coons. The squirrels drop down onto the solar panel then climb from there to the feeder plate. Only way around that is to install a drop down spinner plate that only opens with centrifugal force.
Yes, i have a video thats shows a bunch in the trap getting caught and a bunch of little ones escaping out the holes in the cattle panels. I have since added hog panels to the inside to stop the little ones from squeezing out. The video is “Hog Trap No No” because the cattle panels will not hold little pigs. I learned the hard way!
When I did this video I had the gates locked open by putting the pins in the door channels to hold them open. When the trap is set for trapping those pins are pulled and when the trip wire is hit it releases the door cables and the doors fall closed. As I said before in this video I had the doors held open with pins so they would not close. I hope that helps?
