Ewe people are a culturally diverse people who are not very known by their neighbours. Many people simply feel locked out and can only take wild guesses about who the Ewe people are. This Ewe Demystified channel showcases the history, culture, and language of the Ewes and also shows you many places to visit in Eweland. Get to know the about the Ewe people across Ghana 🇬🇭 , Togo 🇹🇬 and Benin 🇧🇯
Ewe = Ebre = Hebrew We have found over 20+ words on the Yorùbá language that is the same as the Hebrew, and this apparently is because the real - Language - People and - Land of biblical Israel is in Sub-Saharanubsaharan Africa. Details on our channel and website.
As part of my dowry Dohe, and Doyibo had to be purchased. Vikpado was given as a present after child birth. These three clothes are kentes used for specific rites in the ewe culture. This shows kente is not just a special occasion cloth for the ewe people.
@@kingc1198 not very surprising. A number of the people collected from the slave coast were Ewe, Fon, etc. I realized Haitians still say “vodun” like we do here instead of the anglicized “voodoo”
@ewedemystified fon ,ewe ,nago ibo ,awori, oyo ,kongo, wolof, bambara, gedevi and angolan tribes where sent to haiti .we also have a tiny percentage of Akan/Ashanti

It was the Ewe people of Agotime who taugt Kente weaving to the Asante people. During the Asante's newly gained independence from Denkyira and then expansion war campaigns, they fought the Agotime people but were defeated. There was a truce, however. The agreement was that the Asantes teach them how to set up a chieftancy since the Agotime people had just settled down from their migration to their current land. The Agotime people gave the Asantes, Ewe weavers to teach them the art of Kente weaving. Those Ewe weaver who went, got married to Asante women and thus were assimilated. Some Asantes stayed with the Agotime people and helped in setting up a chieftancy. It was the distinguished musicologist Dr. Ephraim Amu an Ewe from Peki who came across Kente weaving first in Bonwere, popularised it to the world through his song "Akyinkyi-akyinky ama mahu nne3ma." The Asantes has over the years changed the origin story of Kente many time. First they say its was a spider that taught Staa Krahan and Karagu Ameyaw. Then they claim that in 1697 Osei Tutu, the king of Asante kingdom, selected several weavers from nearby towns and villages to travel to neighbouring Ivory Coast to become experts in the complex art form. Again they said that they took Ewe people as hostages and compelled them to teach them Kente weaving. Interestingly, there are some professors in some of our universities who validate such Asante lies.
You don't know what Kente is. 1)Weaving is global. Eʋe did not invent weaving. There are NUMEROUS MULTICOLOR WEAVE cloths EVERYWHERE 2)You even said it all yourself in the video, Asante developed a specific type or weaving, pattern, and symbols, which became known as Kente and only for the royals. 3)Educate yourself more on what Kente is. Not every weaved cloth, with a little color in it is Kente. They are made by specialits who follow strict patterns, symbols, meaning, etc. They are not just random. Educate yourself about what Kente is brother please. Why does Eʋe not have Kente? Why is it only in Asante? And made by Asantes only? why are the symbols Asante? Colors Asante color pallets? patterns etc. ALL UNIQUELY found ONLY in Asante? ... Brother Stop.
@@Kbaf4 I think the fact that I didn’t mention the weaving styles of other peoples like Indians or Chinese is evidence that I know what kente is and isn’t. As for Asante kente, there is no doubt that it is gorgeous. All I am doing is presenting evidence of how much older this particular style of weaving is than most believe. All the same, thanks for watching
My dear weaving has been part of man even before Christ In Ghana, The Northeners, Ewes and Ashantis are known for weaving But the difference is the designs, symbols and stories behind each weave. Dont let it seam the ewes are the inventor of weaving in ghana and that ashantis took is from them.
@@mzbroundit looks like you’re mistaking this video for one about weaving in general. Different cultures have different styles of weaving. I’m referring to a particular style of weaving which is common to both the Ewe and the Asante. The only thing I have said about the Ewe kente is the fact that the tradition is much older than the story of the foundation of the Asante Kingdom. I presented documented evidence of Ewe kente from the 16th century. Note that I have not even mentioned that one tribe learnt it from the other. I didn’t do that because I don’t know anything about that. I cannot say that the Ewe taught the Asante because I don’t know that. But it means the Asante may have to revisit the story of how they started weaving. I doubt it’s really from Ananse the spider
They fact that asante is popular for kente weaving that doesn't mean u ..it's only u people who weave ... tribes that weave have their unique patterns ..if u want to behaving like this .. then tell us a story other than the one about ananse (spider ) weaving which was found by a man ...
@@ewedemystified Brother there is not such thing as "Ewe Kente". I repeat. You DON'T know what Kente is! Kente is a uniquely ASANTE style of cloth, with a combination of color, symbols, patters, MEANING, etc. and even location. The fake Chinese knockoff replicas aren't even accepted nor respected as Kente. Do research before you embarrass yourself brother. I'm sure Ewe has a name for their cloth. Use that to describe their cloth, not Kente. Kente is Kente.
The World knows that Kente belongs to Asante (Bonwire) that's why Dr. Ephraim Amu who's an Ewe wrote a song to confirm. You can't eraze history in this 21st century. Asante Bonwire Kente ❤❤❤
Bonwire Kente belongs to Bonwire. That's true. But kente has ancient origins and didn't start from a spider. So we praise the Asante for their delightful kente while also making the true origins known. Thanks for watching
This is wonderful!! I am so glad that I came across your channel. Can you put up the explanation for Foave again as part of tge script was hidden by the icons of two other episodes. Thank you. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽🌟❤️
I'm glad you are enjoying the content here. Do continue to watch and share. Here's the text for the 13th month: The traditional Eʋe calendar features a 13th month called Ƒoave. Ƒoave derives from two Eʋe words, “ƒo” meaning to “clear” and “ave” meaning “forest”. The same conditions of Dzome have intensified and there is the shedding of leaves, the drying up of vegetation and small waterbodies
@@ewedemystified Other than my friend, I remember a US-based lady on youtube also said the same thing. I will look for that video and share the link if utube allows. (Hebrew Ivri Ewe Eʋe The Black Man) I couldn't find the kete vid, but that's lady on utube...
You forgot to mention the similarity in the Ewe word #Gboma an edible leafy green which is from the eggplant species… The Yorubas eat it too and call it #Gboma…👌🏽
Wow 😯 my mouth is actually gaping in shock… this was such a very beneficial, educative and eye opening lesson… please can we have more…oh by the way, you are so very handsome… TFS… 🙌🏽
Mr. narrator, whenever you are narrating a history of a people like in this piece, please, for a historical accuracy sake, go beyong 1884/85 boundaries. The Evwhe people did not migrate into modern Ghana or the so-called Volta Region, and some left behind in Togo. Togo before the WW1 comprised of what you call Volta Region as one nation. The Ewvhe people did NOT migrate into Ghana. It is rather Ghana that migrated into Ewvhe land, meaning: Trans Volta Togoland and Gold Coast became Ghana. We are always living in our own land. The people and families of Togo and Volta region are the same, and they do not recognize that invisible line drawn in Berlin, Germany, without our approval .
Sorry, if you felt I left something out. My videos address specific topics. This one in particular had a narrow focus on how the term "ayigbe" came about. For a fuller history on Ewe migration, I highly recommend one of my older videos Agorkoli and The Ewe Odyssey: A Tale of Migration and Resilience. You forgot to mention Keke in both languages as a wheel or a rolling wheel. Kekevi is the wheel that ropes or tailors have their saw yarn is rolled on. As children, we used kekevi to make cars
Thank you this was very informative for me especially because I was born in Ghana but raised in the US. So I cannot speak ewe fluently. This helps us! Our parents were so busy making sure we speak English for school. As we got older and not exercising our native tongue we as children are unable to speak it 😔. Please don’t stop your content if you feel you don’t get enough views. There is someone you are helping and it is very much needed and appreciated 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 Thank you for this content ❤
Very informative information as I will be relocating to the volta region shortly. Were these people ever a part of the transatlantic slave trade or just the Akans/Ashanti from the Accra/Kumasi region
