The GAHFU (Garifuna American Heritage Foundation United) channel features a variety of content aimed at preserving and promoting Garifuna culture. This includes videos on cultural events, music, dance, cooking recipes, workshops, fitness, and speaking engagements. The channel serves as a platform to educate and raise awareness about Garifuna heritage, targeting both the Garifuna community and the wider public. Some of the videos were filmed during our live sessions offered at the Garifuna Language & Culture Academy in Los Angeles, made possible in part by a grant from The Alliance for California Traditional Arts in partnership with The Walter & Elise Haas Found, The William & Flora Hewlett, and The James Irvine Foundation. Es una lastima decir que en Nicaragua, solamente 5 personas hablan garifuna a pesar de haber mas de 3000 personas de descendencia garifuna viviendo aqui, y es peligoroso perder el idioma....luego se pierde la danza, comida e identidad garinagu. Sopa's Album "The Prince of Punta" was my first Introduction to Punta, Mom (rest in Heaven) had one of my Aunts bring this from a visit to Tela and bought it to the States, definitely one of those songs we woke up to when its time to clean, hearing it just makes me feel like Home, i smell the arroz y frijoles, la yuca y carne, Truly a gifted Man and the Banda that plays behind, Proud to be from Honduras and have been blessed by the Sounds of the Garifuna Drums and rhythms. I so love this. I am one of the organizers of the Annual Indigenous Peoples of the Americas Parade in New York. It is so sad that, other than myself as an "individual," no Garifuna groups in NYC have shown any interest in representing us. I am not sure if it is because many of them identify more with Africa? But we must remember that we are indeed indigenous American peoples too.
