A proper restoration wil set you back way more, like engine and gearbox overhaul, and full body and frame restoration etc etc. Here you can see what a real restoration wil cost, if you will do a total restoration by a company: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-H6zGGV7iaL0.htmlfeature=shared you can save on the hours, but not on a good engine gearbox overhaul, and professional respray. This is more ‘fixing up’ then restoring but still a nice job, except for bondo-ing the floorboard which is a big no-no especially if it is such a small piece to weld. A mobile welder would have had that fixed for $100, or could have used it to learn to weld yourself with a loaned or rented welding machine for even less.
I bought a 71 super beetle for 1500 bucks, non-running, sketchy wiring, dead trans, and a motor that won't start. is it practical as my first vehicle? god no. was it a horrible mistake? absolutely! would I change it for the world? not a chance. I love this car, and I will invest years of time and effort into it, simply because it's my dream to.
VW people love low cost abbreviated content, the lower the price the more excited they get. This outcome in not realistic to the average person, the time component is missing - it could take a year to do this much work in your off hours if you have a job - or just take a year off work and see how much it costs you 😂 I worked for a shop where people brought restored buses like this in for service and the average shop bill was another $12,000 just to fix a few more things - because most people are not mechanics and have to pay a shop to do their repairs - shop labor is no longer cheap because cost of living is so high everywhere. This restoration was far from a complete resto (didn’t even split the case), many of the critical maintenance items were repaired but I guarantee many more problems will surface as it is driven, if you can fix those items yourself then great. What does a complete restoration cost to make one PERFECT and how long does it take???? My good friend did it with a 71 - took 10 years in his spare time and cost him $100,000 plus his time, want to see what that bus looks like??? This video is zen. It's an absolute masterpiece to watch while a masterpiece is playing!! I love old VW buses!!! Shiny, rusty, restored, custom, junky or gleaming!
This guy is listing all these parts that you're going to need with that's the small insignificant part it's the rust it's the ability to repair that rust the knowledge to know how to weld and work with old rusted-out stuff he must be like in California the land of fruits and nuts are down or down in the desert but what about all the rust if you can't do this yourself about your $70,000 to rebuild a beetle that's only going to be worth 20 if you're lucky
