I just had to chime in. My father had a Goodwin Granger rod that he took to Greenland in 1941 just before WWII. Stationed there as an Army Engineer. He would fish for Artic Char and Greyling. Using a Ocean City no. 36 reel and silk line. I always liked that rod until I had to sell it due to a hardship in the family. But that was 40 years ago. Today I am proud to say I found a replacement on crageslist for $200. It is a 1952 vintage Granger Special 9053 model by Wright and Mcgill in the original aluminum tube and sock. Both tips are there and are identical. The rod seat has very light normal wear. Intacked cork grip. Sorry to say it is not a safe queen. I enjoy my rod the way it was intended to be. Catching trout, bass, and an occasional small salmon. I would love to bring it to Colorado to be around its stable mates. The Special as it was called was to be a Working Man's rod that he could afford. I did pair it with a Pflueger Medalist 1495 1/2 of the same vintage. A great WF6F rod. Hope to see you .
I just loved the content of this video. When I think of a Colorado cane rod, a couple of names always come to mind Goodwin Granger and later Wright and McGill. To me they were the pioneers of bamboo fly rods. Their patented rod tapers made it possible to catch the smallest native trout to giant steelhead and any fish in between. My father took a Granger rod to Greenland in 1941. He was an Army Engineer. He caught Artic char and greyling. It was that rod that even at the early age of 6 that makes bamboo run through my veins. So I think things like cast iron, a good rifle, an old violin, and a bamboo fly rod are to be handed down to our family. Along with their many stories of triumphs and tragedies.
I don't have a Granger rod yet, but I do have a 6' 2/3wt bamboo rod that Michael Sinclair restored and presented to me. It's absolutely stunningly beautiful and is my prize item of all my fishing gear. Beautiful LSU colors, purple rod with gold wrappings, gold hardware, tiger eye agate at the stripping eye, and a lathed pine cone grip that very closely resembles tiger stripes. It's PERFECT for fishing those tight spots in the mountain laurel in the north Georgia mountain and it has caught trout ranging from four inches to more than sixteen inches in the Lanier tailwater on the Chattahoochee River. After seeing this video I am determined to track down a Granger rod! Those are beautiful and the history is amazing!
This was a very dangerous video for me to watch LOL. I'm in Englewood CO and was bitten by the Bamboo Rod bug back in 2002 or so upon stumbling into Mike's shop in Lyons with my Father. I started my love for Grangers when I received a gift from my father, a GA7030 to fish my home waters. I love to comb estate sales, looking in corners and closets for that metal tube.....I was bitten by that bug in 2012 or so when I found a GS9050 hanging in a barn in Pine CO that I paid $50 for. The rod was fully assembled and in pretty rough shape (as who knows how long it had been hanging in there). A week or so later I received a call from the gentleman who was hosting the estate sale, and he said they found the original bag and tube with the second tip in the crawl space-and that truly set the hook in me. I purchased my first bamboo rod in '79...I had been fishing fiberglass since my teens...the rod i got was an orvis 8'6" 5 wt. "Madison" It came with an lrh lightweight hardy reel...quite a rig for a 25 year old carpenter... So I was allowed to enter into world that had roots over 100 years old... Fast forward 40 years and i wss guiding on the south platte...fishing all the shops super cool graphites and selling them too. But i missed that old madison...i sold it because i needed the $$...that was quite a while back...i just fished glass and graphite until about 2000...then moved back to colorado... I looked into another bamboo rod and fell back at the costs...so like other things in my life I learned how to make my own...then ending up starting to sell them to help me afford to make more and go to different water. Its a special part of my life...led to make some special friendships... Catching a nice 18"+ brown in cheesman on a fly i tied with a rod I made is an incredible experience... Thanks for the video
Being new to this region of Colorado, I appreciate the information provided here. This information needs a public update on general information available to the public.
Love this. ru-vid.comUgkxntWMOZsO1Zfv-pdn_XuffEtNkTYAYu4Z recommend Got it a couple weeks ago hated having to wait almost 2 weeks to get it out fishing. This pole is one of our new catfish poles. It stood up quite well today. It casts great. It reels smoothly. The pole is easily collapsible. friend ended up catching only one fish because we didn't have too long to fish, and he reeled it in easily. Good buy. Hubby is happy so I am happy! Looking forward to warmer temps so we can spend more time playing with it!
Very good. I have fished my Orvis 7' 4weight since the early 1980's. It is my favorite object that I own. The feelings expressed by this piece I really can relate to. I do believe that bamboo being an organic material had a soul when it was alive and the care and skill that. these builders put into them imparts life back to the material.
I was fortunate enough to meet AK and Tie Flies with him one afternoon. He showed us some of the tricks he used to tie patterns a bit faster and to be more attractive. He is the kind of person I would like to be as I age through fly tying.
Excellent to see. When I had TUEM, INC, an Incubator Firm at PEDCO I consulted with the CEO BACK IN 2010 about making PUEBLO Energy Self Sufficient. Electrolyzing the Dam was one of the suggestions. lol 2 DOWN 3 TO GO!
