Encaustic Wax Art... After discovering Encaustic Wax Art in 2012, it was love at first sight!
I was absolutely entranced by this magical medium, and set out to learn as much about it as I possibly could. It touched me on a soul level like no other.
On exhibiting my work, it seemed people were as entranced by this medium as I was, and out of nowhere, my sharing encaustic began. I've run workshops, demos, art talks and 1-1's, from small art clubs, to The National Honey Show, and Living Crafts, helping complete beginners, who claim not to draw a straight line, through to professional artists wanting to expand their skills. Teenagers to grandparents. I won The Binnie Birstein Scholarship to the 15th Encaustic Conference in Provincetown.
I am passionate about sharing this medium, which is a truly healing art form, I've seen it's therapeutic benefits time and time again, and now on a mission to share it with as many people as I can... in a supportive, fun, and accessible way for all.
Hi - This video is taken from my paid online course The Art and Magic of Encaustic, where part two can be found... I shared it publicly after a request of ways to colour your wax, and it's had great feedback, it wasn't created with the intention to share in isolation on RU-vid, however I can perhaps see your frustration if you'd been looking for part two without realising, I will make that clearer in the description comments. If you wish to see part two, and the remainder of the online course, you can find it here: wax.artyheaven.com/encaustic-magic. Wishing you all the best, Julie.
Hi Stacy, I got it in the Vendor Room at The Encaustic Conference in Provincetown a couple of years ago… (I’ve not seen one before or elsewhere since, hence grabbing it when I could!)
Do check out the Bloomz Webpage for details and dates of the other members challenges, and further instructions on how you can try these art projects out for yourself! thebloomz.co.uk/
You're welcome... so pleased you found it useful! There are more encaustic resources and info on my website www.artyheaven.com Reach out if you need any help! :)
I just watched a video by the R&F artist and she said the oil in the pigment sticks would weaken the wax and should not be used with encaustic wax. Have you had problems using the paint sticks?
There's a ratio you should stick to, you don't want too much oil, or too much wax... R&F have a great information sheet on their website which explains the ratios, and grey area middle ground, really well. :)
Yes, you could use the same technique with an iron... although be aware there are different types of waxes, and ensure you don't overheat the wax. Check out my online courses for more info... (details in the description)... or e-mail me: julie@artyheaven.com if you want more clarification... :)
Pleased you enjoyed it...! I've been meaning to share this video, as this is a question I'm asked quite often... you can find your answer here! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-G-qhjeKcN6g.html For more info on encaustic painting go here: artyheaven.com/online-courses/
This was a really helpful video - thank you 😊 Am just starting out in this medium & like the idea of mixing my own colours rather than buying a whole heap of different ones or trying to colour mix on a piece while layering.
You are so welcome! I always recommend starting with what you have, and then growing from there. As you enjoyed this video, I will add that it's taken from my beginners course: The Art & Magic of Encaustic, which contains many more videos such as this one if you're looking for more guidance. wax.artyheaven.com/encaustic-magic Anyhow, I hope you get some great results.. Enjoy! :)
Hi Christine, You're very welcome! To clean, heat your brushes, and wipe in tissue, repeat until clean, you can also use soy wax to clean them... it's a great question, I'll put it on a list for future blog posts! :) I also have a new hot off the press free resource you might find useful... Enjoy! :) courses.artyheaven.com/collage-wax

Thank you so much! Encaustic paint prices have held me back from trying this medium. Your video has encouraged me to make some paints with what i already have!
You're welcome! I'm always an advocate of start with what you have and expand it from there... hope you have fun, and let us know how you get on! Reach out if you need more resources or guidance.... julie@artyheaven.com :)
Hi - Yes of course... I'm often asked about this subject, here's a blog I wrote... fingers crossed it might give you some pointers to look into... :) artyheaven.com/hotplates/
Hi Amy - It has dammar resin added to it... (it's an natural product, asian tree sap.) I have this resource which explains more, you might find of interest: artyheaven.com/encaustic-wax-high-heat/ Let me know if you have any more questions...! Best wishes, Julie.
Thank you so much for your tips. I question. I am struggling because when I try to paint this on top of another layer of wax, I burn down into that layer and the way mixes with the color I'm trying to put down. Any suggestions?
Hi Kelli, you're welcome! It sounds like you are over fusing, (or applying the second layer before the first layer of wax has cooled enough)... both reasons will result in mixed colours. Try holding your heat source a bit further away, and keep it moving evenly around the board, this will result in a lighter fuse, and therefore less likely to mix the two layers of colour together... I also have this resource which you might find helpful: artyheaven.com/encaustic-wax-high-heat/ Good luck, and let me know how you get on! Best wishes, Julie.
You're welcome, thank you for your comments! I also have this resource which you might find interesting: artyheaven.com/encaustic-wax-high-heat/ Best wishes, Julie.

Hi Elizabeth... I've never done batik, so I can't say for sure, but I don't see why it wouldn't... I believe batik wax works at a lower temperature than encaustic, (but again, can't say for sure) so you might need to keep an eye on the temperature of the stylus, but other than that, I can't see why not... have fun if you give it a go... and if you need more resources, check out here: artyheaven.com/online-courses/
Hi Kathy - I use a paper which is specifically created for use with encaustic, you can use alternative papers, but they can affect how the wax glides across the paper, and the longevity of the piece. I've never tried it on foam core board, I'm not sure how it would react to the heat of the iron, but I'm all for testing everything once! Give it a try... but start on a lower heat setting... If you want any help, check out my encaustic courses here! artyheaven.com/online-courses/
Really nice piece. I like the soft flesh tones; they stand out against the background you chose. Well done :) 👌😊 -Best of luck on your art and your channel, and much support from one artist to another. -Huge 👍's up!
Yes...! It works fabulously with oil paints... I cover this (and multiple other ways to create colour!) in this course: arty-heaven.teachable.com/p/learn-to-layer-with-wax-and-dammar
