I've never felt so captivated by the book of Job. And yay! Leviathan makes sense now. This is an amazing lecture. Thank you! I can't wait to read Eric's book.

What if we accepted that war was being waged against Job by an unseen enemy to destroy his relationship with God and Job had no idea he was in a war or who the enemy is? But Job valued Love , Good , Truth, Life , Light , more than life. . What if Job saw himself and had the identity of a soldier in war , on the battlefield to fight for all that is God ? Would he consider the wounds and pain he sustained as “ punishment “? As Children of God what would be our understanding and response to wounds and pain be if we accepted the identity and context scripture give His sheep? Thank you so much for articulating the book of Job to be something other than “ punishment “! I’ve read “ SUFFERING WISELY AND WELL” and currently reading “Piercing Leviathan”. Would you consider responding to the idea that seems consistent with ; “… , that there is none like him on the earth, ….”” ‭‭Job‬ ‭2‬:‭3‬ ‭NKJV‬‬ and “And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.” ‭‭Revelation‬ ‭12‬:‭17‬ ‭NKJV‬‬ in the context of Job not knowing he is in the context of war being waged against him or even who the enemy is. And any parallel of David , and “no one on earth like him “ to oppose a known enemy in a known context of war. The Book of Job seems to make sense to understand Job being on a battlefield and sustaining horrible wounds but not knowing he is target of The Enemy or that he is even in a war. Would a soldier consider his wounds received on the battlefield “punishments “? Similarly would a Child of God who desires to do all God’s will (David) and all who are enabled to seek God with all their heart , soul, mind, and strength , consider the calamities and pains of life ( apart from the consequences of disobedience, not the case of Job), punishment from God , in the context of life that is having war being raged against them by Satan? How should a Child of God understand and respond to being wounded or losing life on the spiritual battlefield?

Having an understanding of oral tradition and oral hermeneutics helps to understand the text of scripture we have today. One could ponder what happened between the time of Jesus and the recording of the gospels. There is only one answer. It was passed down orally and then finally written.
@rmwestjr
@rmwestjr 8 месяцев назад
Possibly, however, Jesus was a rabbi and in rabbinical tradition, disciples took notes. Like everyone’s take on how the gospels were constructed, this is speculative but was standard practice.

@@rmwestjr I have no doubt that Jesus understood tradition but I don't believe that Jesus went to rabbi school.

@@geraldpolmateer3255 That’s not my point. His students, disciples and apostles, I believe would have recorded some of his teachings. I also think that Jesus would have directed/appointed someone to do so.

Anyone who describes themselves as a "believer" in the bible, has zero business in making statements about its historicity. Obviously. Fact is there's zero evidence of any significant Israelite population, slave or otherwise in ancient Egypt. Theology has nothing to do with actual history, or reality for that matter and should never be portrayed as anything even vaguely related to science or history.

@stephengray1344

Given that the text explicitly claims that the Israelites did not start to worship YHWH until after they had left Egypt, what evidence do you think we should be able to find for Israelites in Egypt? We know for a fact that there were Semitic groups living in Egypt (for example, there was a whole city of them right next to Pi-Ramses right up until the reign of Ramses II). What would you need to convince you that one of these groups could have become the Israelites? And why insist that believers should not be allowed to make statements about the historicity of parts of the Bible? Surely statements about the historicity of a text should be judged on their merits, rather than on the basis of who made them. It is exceedingly common for ancient texts to interpret events through a theological lens. Do you think that mean that we have to throw out every single ancient text that attributes any event to the author's deity? If not, then why do you hold the books of the Bible to a different standard?
@ngashmir
@ngashmir 6 месяцев назад
Your statement is the product of the universal notion that biblical faith is devoid of evidence and logic. As a general rule, faith requires no basis of truth. Anything goes as far as faith is concerned. However, academic disciplines such as archeology have made many discoveries that support the Bibles characters, locations, etc. Biblical faith demands truthfulness of all its claims and invites would be doubters to prove otherwise and if successful to reject it and if found to be truthful to be embraced. Other world religions cannot live up to this hence they require blind following.

(29 October, 2023, 06:10, p.m. EST) From comments made by Professor James K. Hoffmeier, I understand this video-taped lecture was apparently made in the Netherlands (Holland). So most of the audience are Dutchmen, who are able to speak and understand English. Apparently Tyndale is a biblical publishing House in Great Britain, sponsoring this lecture. The Dutch have a long association with the English, the American Pilgrims lived in the Netherlands for several years before migrating to Massachusetts and founding Plymouth Colony circa 1620. No doubt, Dutch silver coins circulated in early 17th century AD Plymouth, along with English coinage. Hoffmeier mentions his attending a lecture in Leiden, in Holland. I lived in Sittard, the Netherlands, from 1971-1975.

Hi! Yes, this lecture was delivered in The Netherlands at our school, Tyndale Theological Seminary. We invited Dr. Hoffmeier to our campus to speak at our Summer Seminar. To learn more about our seminary visit tyndale-europe.edu (Also, we are not connected with the publishing house in England. 😉)

(29 October, 2023, 05:50 p.m. EST) Professor James K. Hoffmeier mentions a three part video presentation, part three being titled "Where is Mount Sinai and Why it doesn't matter?" In the part three video, Dr. Hoffmeier reviews over a dozen scholarly proposals for the location of Mount Sinai. He concludes that he is unable to identify its location! Why? He states that the sacred mount must have archaeological evidence supporting the Exodus date. He notes two Exodus dates are popular with biblical scholars: (1) Circa 1446 BC based on statements made in 1 Kings 6:1 about 480 years elapsing from the Exodus to Solomon's building of the Temple in Jerusalem. (2) Circa 1260 BC based on the mention of a city called Ramesses, built by Hebrew slaves (Hoffmeier prefers the 1260 BC Exodus). Professor Hoffmeier said he was unaware of any Mount Sinai proposal having pottery debris for either 1446 BC or 1260 BC. This absence of pottery debris evidence caused him to admit he had no idea where the sacred mount was (this includes Gebel al-Lawz in Midian, today's Saudi Arabia). Finding no site possessing pottery debris of either 1446 BC or 1260 BC, Hoffmeier concluded it really was not important as to identifying the archaeological evidence of where Mt. Sinai was. This part three video titled "Where is Mount Sinai and why it doesn't matter?" Is available elsewhere on You Tube to view. The 1446 BC date is called the "Early Exodus Date" whereas the 1260 BC date is called the "Late Exodus Date." CONTRA the claim of Professor Hoffmeier that no proposal has pottery debris for circa 1446 BC or 1260 BC, it my conviction that the Professor errs. There is one site, and only one site, in the Sinai, having pottery debris of the 15th and 13th centuries BC. That site is Gebel Serabit el Khadim. If interested in this subject google "Academia Profile Walter R. Mattfeld," where I have scholarly research papers identifying the location of Mt. Sinai based on the pottery debris Professor Hoffmeier, claims doesn't exist.
@501Mobius
@501Mobius 5 месяцев назад
>That site is Gebel Serabit el Khadim.< I believe he means no large pottery debris was found at any of the several sites proposed for Mt. Sinai. In the Sinai and Arabia there are a number of sites that show signs of visitation by Egyptians. There are inscriptions of Rameses III found at Abu Zenaim, Serabit el-Khadim, Abu Ghda valley near the Nakhl Oasis, Timna, Wadi Radadi, Seir-Bidu, Tabuk, and Tamya. Are we to suppose the Egyptians didn't even stop for a hot meal at any of these locations?

Suggesting there is such a thing as god is unethical. Who would suggest travel as if it were best done with one foot in fantasyland, using a fantasyland vocabulary. Those using spiritual vocabulary are digging to get out of a hole. Those using spiritual verbiage lack a sense of quality control, Christians glued their books on to Jewish books, Mormons affixed their books on to them both. The religious are profoundly silly. Much to do about nothing, theology is weak sauce. One might expect a deity, if there were such a thing, would be known by everyone or is fudging the title a bit. The fraud of religious people is revealed by the failure rate of prayers in a children's hospital & the lack of mountains moving by verbal commands. Theologians grant themselves the title without any input from a deity & then use fantasyland vocabulary in academic settings, usually as a podium jockey with clergyman dress. But if I can't use my weak argument, then I don't have an argument at all. Those arguing God, get their knowledge of deity from the same place they get understanding of reason. Rather than a beacon of inspirational light, they are avoided like the old woman with too many cats. It was secular law & order ending the inquisitions & witch killing. Nothing fails like prayer in a children's hospital & even Jesus Christ proclaims faith is worthless if you can't get magic mountains to move when you practice verbal-command landscaping. No wonder Freud wrote the antidote to Christianity is literacy. These are the wolves in sheep's clothing, you know them by their works: Who has honor while suggesting a reality-God? As if we did not have the saying: God helps those helping themselves, because the fiction is known for a perfect record of nothing-doing. Moreover, it cannot be moral or ethical to suggest there is a god. As if one should respect the suggestion, we all travel with one foot in fantasyland, using a fantasyland vocabulary. It is religious vocabulary fascism finds useful. Law is authorized from fantasyland & the workings are a mystery, unknown to the non-believers among the oppressed.
