Living the life of a Bird, migrating South to Central Portugal in a small project stone house in Winter, restoring the property and making our dream retirement home. Migrating North to Swedish Lapland and restoring our log cabins property and enjoying the beautiful Swedish summers. Loads of projects, challenges and adventures completely changing our life style.
Facing the challenges of The Schengen rules from the UK, 90 days at a time in Europe, looking to move to Portugal via a D7 visa in the near future, retiring as early as financially possible.
When in the UK working temporary / contract jobs earning enough to pay the UK bills
From 2023 we will visit Portugal January to March and work on our stone house and July to September will be spent in Sweden working on our old school house cabin
We’re a similar age to you both and also from the UK. We’re just embarking on a very similar journey to buying a property in Sweden. How did you overcome not having a Swedish bank account to facilitate the property transaction? Most Swedish agents we’ve spoken to so far insist on a Swedish bank account…. I’m sure there’s an answer!
Good luck on your house hunting, we are sure you won’t regret it, Sweden is wonderful. We were lucky to have a friend in Sweden who we transferred monies to and then they paid in Sweden, not sure there is another way, but we bank with Revolut and we were able to transfer money to Swedish visa debit card for a purchase they made for us, it is supposed to take 30 mins but took 24hrs. Another way maybe transfer to the agent or solicitor, maybe? Any way all the best 🇸🇪❤️
@@tapasandfika Many thanks for sharing that. All very useful information and I’m sure there’s a reach around somewhere in there. I understand the Swedish have strict anti money laundering laws just as we do in the UK and we definitely want to do this properly. Just wish I was wealthy enough to even need to launder money!! All hard earned savings and pension money. Really enjoying your videos - best of luck and thanks for sharing your journey 🇸🇪🧡
Can't say I know, but £7k sounds about right, my guess was maximum SEK 100k (I didn't hear you mentioning the price). But it all depends on location and the shape, and it's hard to say just from the video. The main feature of the wood stove (kakelugn) is that the smoke is led up and down through channels inside the structure so that a lot of heat from the smoke is kept heating it up instead of just going out the chimney
Thanks for the info! The chimney really does seem to hold the heat, it’s a really impressive heat output from such a small burner area. We paid 70000 SEK plus some fees totaled about £6.3k at the time, we are about half way up Vasterbotten region, so quite remote, approx 10hr drive from Stockholm 👍🇸🇪❤️
@@tapasandfika Yeah, I got where you are. I meant more "local location", like close to a lake/the sea, close to stores, close to child daycare/school. Things like that
@@tapasandfika Found this illustrating the principle, they're not all exactly the same though. www.gabrielkakelugnar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/funktionsskiss_gabriel_kakelugn.jpg
How come your cabin was such a bargain? Sweden is renowned for being really expensive. Do people not want to buy them anymore? I love it. What a lovely life. 😊
They really are amazingly cheap compared to anything in the UK, they are also cheap to own in terms of yearly costs. But they are remote and Winters are very cold we recorded -43C on our max min temp guage this winter 🥶 🇸🇪❤️
I think you are right, we know the building was relocated and rebuilt as the road and railway moved North. This became its final resting place, it really is amazing how resourceful people were back in the day 👍🇸🇪
Thank you for the video! it's honestly so helpful to see some things that'll go on :) I'm planning a trip to sweden in the next year or two once i get my licence sorted. Do you have any tips on what to do when taking dog's? as i have 3 and want to know the rough cost's and what i need to do to take them
Glad it was helpful! With the dogs you need a euro pet passport if possible else a Uk vet animal health cert to travel The cost of dogs on car on eurotunnel is around £20 per dog each way, but easiest way to travel to France with dogs 👍
@@tapasandfika Thank you so much :) i'm thinking to go to northern Ireland i heard theres a vet over there that can give an EU pet passport i know the health certs can cost a bit if you want to travel more then once
Thanks so much for posting! I am looking forward to seeing how you get along and of course learning more about the community around you as well! Congratulations on a Beautiful property! A fan from Nova Scotia!
You are so welcome! Canada 🇨🇦 is great, We’re making slow progress but have just put a wood fired hot tub in the garden, more fun than work at the moment 😃
Very interesting!! You have got me thinking ......I love the nature in Sweden and the lack of many restrictions regarding enjoying the outdoors etc. Well done!
Great job , just curious , if you were painting over existing exterior walls and they weren't damaged or in disrepair would you need to put on an undercoat or can you just paint over with more exterior paint ? And I've read that with all paint and primer in Portugal you have to dilute with water prior to using , I'm from Canada and things are a bit different there I'm finding ( product wise )
Do you have any issues with dogs at the borders this is my first time taking my dog I can not wait if am honest something I've wanted to do for a couple years now and this year it became reality
The border with dogs has always gone smoothly except once on our return to the UK where we had the wrong year written for the worming treatment, but we kept the receipt from the Portuguese vet so the border control edited the pet passport and ok it 👍 . Was a bit stressful at the time 😀 The problem is pet paperwork really is subject to human error and a lot is hand written. We always double check things now and keep all receipts 👍
Hello again, is there a particular type of muzzle that the ferry insists on? I was planning to get a soft one so the dog can drink and pant. Thank you, Sarah
Nice one 👍 definitely look at Blocket.se and search Stuga and area to find cheaper log cabins. Hemnet.se has more completed homes. Also maybe rent somewhere and ask around as lots are sold by word of mouth in the area we are in. Best of luck it’s amazing in Sweden 🇸🇪 👍
Lets do a trade, when you are in Sweden I rent you're place in Portugal, ans when you are in Portugal, I rent the place in Sweden ! I live in Sweden, I have e a dog, but I realy like you're way of living !!! I have a bus camper myself.
We hope to one day have a our second cabin to rent, a few years away though 🤞🏼, there’s loads of great bargains in Portugal and Sweden especially good if you have a bus to live in 👍🇵🇹🇸🇪
It's a fantastic size, its huge achievement for DIY's as you said yourself, it give us other DIY's the confidence to try things and I love your honesty re mistakes etc, not all youtubers are as up front. 💪
Good to see you back, well done i like watching your video they are nice and relaxed. Yes you messed up the order that you did things but all is well that ends well. Thank you for sharing your costing. Thanks for the video. 😊
You did a lot of hard work there. But putting that tile over those beads was crazy. The ceiling in the barn was so nice with that light wood You should have put a light stain on it and it would have been much more bright and cheery in there. But the wood stain is just my opinion. You are never supposed to put cement on stone walls never especially smearing it in big patches. That should have been all lime rendered also cement traps the moisture and breaks everything down. All in all time will tell. But the finished result looks great.
